Seriously, I'd have to agree with the submittor here. I am all for giving your kids the best, but kids in the My First X demographic (under 8? at some point primary colors get embarrassing) don't really have a use for a laptop. Even if they did, a retired laptop (even from ebay) would probably a better choice than this product, which just screams "status symbol."

I didn't get a current system until college, always learning on and using yesteryear's tech. It's a good way to go, b/c you don't take the cutting edge hardware for granted. I think it made me more aware of issues like backwards compatability, which is important.

This is great news for everyone, especially those of us in the Free Source community. While Linux has become a houshold verb, nearly rivalling other obscure operating systems such as the Macintosh and BeOS in user fervency, there has failed to be much of a dent made in the online auction community.

True story, I was unable to leave feedback (for non-ebayers: feedback is what you leave for people, usually a letter grade) using Galeon. I had to do it from work with my IE browser. This is too much to ask of the average desktop user, but Linux is definitely on the right track.

Not to mention the countless bugs, often resulting in lost orders or user fraud and credit card and identity theft, in the core ebay software. Once the next generation ebay is submitted to peer review, we will see an eradication of these bugs, just as we have seen in the Linux kernel 2.4.

You are going to be at a disadvantage trying to switch to an engineering position in your current company. All the more so since your coworkers and your boss find you useful where you are. Basically, you have been labelled by them as "help desk material," and this will likely overshadow any of your skills.

So, it may come down to choosing whether you would be happier with your current employer, or doing what you want to be doing for someone else. It wouldn't hurt to see what's out there, and if you get an offer then it might make your present employer see you in a new light.

Basically, the company is not going to go out of its way to move your career for you. You shouldn't expect them to. But most employers would be happy to work with you to put you where you will benefit them the most.

As this is happening, I recommend frequent practice. Try to keep abreast of current practices and new concepts and paradigms. Good luck.

Which means they have all grown up in the geek culture where television, radio, and Internet are all free or subsidized.

The Free Source community is an offshoot of the same ideals, where cooperation is encouraged and revelation celebrated. What Microsoft has done here is not so different from what Linux Torvalds did to Minux. Just as his actions drove Minux out of business, so too will Microsoft proceed to drive Linux into the ground.

In the end, the winners are the users. For us, things just get more free and easier to use, which is what technology is all about. Empowerment to be our best.

RF lighting is a great idea...just not for humans. While normal "visible" light (like what is coming out of your computer screen right now) consists of tiny waves called "photons." These are the base quantas of light energy. Bizarrely, radio waves consist of the exact same photons, but at vastly different energy levels! Heat also consists of photons, again with different energy or frequency amounts.

So RF lighting is just normal lighting at a different frequency. A frequency that humans can't even see! Trying to listen to the radio or use wireless networking in the presence of RF lighting would be like trying to watch TV with a spotlight in your face.

MPlayer does not compile with a GUI by default, which is a little bizarre. To be fair, this is not a negative point as this is not really required if you just intend to use MPlayer to play back DVDs, as it does not support DVD menus. So having a GUI is not really necessary for DVD playback. However, if you intend to use MPlayer to play back other file types, you will need the GUI.

    Nice.

Ridiculous claims aside, I'd prefer to steer clear of semilegal areas like DVD viewing under Linux. Linux users are used to having to reboot into Windows to play games, do word processing, download music, and print, so making them do the same to watch a DVD shouldn't bother too many people.

This strikes me as a predictable outcome after years of focussing more on pretty cases and bouncing icons than on what's inside. Being 2 years behind the cutting edge in hardware just isn't going to pass muster.

I notice that Galeon has a "use as background" item under the right-click menu for images, but it does not appear to function (on my setup anyway). Does anyone know how they expect to implement this? Setting the background image is pretty WM-dependent, IIRC.
