  1. Re:Why is this different? on Palin Email Snoop Found Guilty On 2 Charges · · Score: 1

    You know, fuck you.

A criminal is someone that takes your stuff. It doesn't matter if you locked it down or not. They take it == crime. What kind of fucked up word is this now that if you don't lock it down enough, then it's free for all?? No wander companies are turning to DRM - your mindset is what is causing it.

PS. You can pick any lock with a drill. Enough said.

It actually does matter if you "lock it down or not." That is what Intellectual Property and rights are all about. For example, I can come up with a product or even just a name for something and even use it for a while. But if I don't actively protect it then I can actually lose the rights to it! Look into the FreeBSD Daemon art (original artist) for more info.

And in all honestly, it depends on the situation and the circumstance. For example, is it the fault of a random "bad person" who tried to break into my CRX Si and failed? Here are some more details:
    * They didn't get in - they used a screw driver IN THE LOCKS instead of the cover plate than grants EZ access (obviously they didn't know WTF they were doing).
    * I had left my wallet on the floor the passenger seat. Had that not been there, they would have not attempted to break into the car.
    * The item of most value would be the stereo and its components, yet nothing had ever occurred on that street in the previous 10 years

And in the end, you know what my reaction was? "It was my fault, because I left the wallet in the car." Sometimes it's good to take personal responsibility.

On another occasion, someone stole my bike from 7-Eleven while I was playing Street Fight II. I was so upset! I just ran in for a quick game (only 25 cents on me). And when I looked back to check (in between rounds) I saw my bike missing. Was it my fault? Yes. Should I have had a chain to put on it? Yes. Should a random person have taken it? No. So from your mind set, I did nothing wrong, the person who took the bike is the only one to blame.

You can't guess the key to the lock as you can a password?*

If anything S.P. should be footing the bill for all the proceedings simply because she used such easy/obvious answers that it was inevitable to happen. It's like saying someone stole my Porsche Carrera when I left the windows down in front of my house. sure, they were down but I only ran in for a bit. That sort of negligence is inviting to 'criminals' (or joy riders!).

Here's another example: 2 kids playing with a loaded hand gun. Is owner of gun at fault when one kills the other? Sue the dad? No! Sue the gun company for allowing the gun to be shot by kids (enter the gun lock controls).

Even though I jest with serious subjects, you can't always blame the dog for jumping on the chair and eating your food. Sometimes you should just know better.

    * And yes you can pick a lock, but that requires skill, something that doesn't require skill is http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=sarah+palin&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Now that I settled in, I've found a few more here and there, depending where I'm at in the house. What is disconcerting though is that you can see almost everyone's network name just like that. It's the default set up by their provider. I doubt those clowns know what they're broadcasting.

While at first I would think there's no harm in this... of course someone will find a use for it to attack people... or try to take control of. From my point of view, I would walk around Pasadena for lunch and scan the networks. I found more than a few open networks, i'm sure it was intentional. But scanning is not so bad, I had no other motivation but seeing how many networks there were on my route. But other people? Maybe no so much...

  15. The media makes it worse... on South Park's Episode 201 — the Expurgated Version · · Score: 4, Insightful

This morning I heard "so who is really to blame? The creators of south park who write the offensive satire or those who are making the threats of possible violence and death? Well, obviously those making threats are wrong, but what about the creators?"

So lets see, at least in the United States of America we have the beleif of "Freedom of Speech" right? That means we can dissent when we feel especially strong about something.

So I figure, for anyone who says "the creators are wrong in their satire" just opens the door for "those hippies supporting marijuana" (Viva Marijuana was the sign I saw this morning on the way to work) to also be "censored."

Oh but that's totally different right? Lets move to 'scientology.' Why should they not be allowed to censor people? Political groups? Schools? Religions with abuse scandals? Where/when do we stop censoring?

The best and most straightforward argument I have heard regarding this is:
"South Park has made fun of Christians, Jews, people of different ethnicities and organizations. But none other than the Muslims have threatened violence before." That should tell us where the real problem lies.

From my point of view, when I first saw South Park I was offended (Jesus Christ Vs. Santa Claus). But as time passed and I gave it a chance... eventually viewing it when it came on Comedy Central I enjoyed it. As a matter of fact, I regularly recommend it to people when key issues come up. Such as their red cross/catholic scandal episode.

Finally, what happened with Issac Hayes was tragic but eye opening. He shows that "I can be part of something (great) that covers a lot of subjects - that consequently offend everyone at some point or other, as long as it doesn't offend me or my beliefs."

I couldn't even start to count how many times I've been told that things are to be done as they are done because that's how it is - regardless that a method I use is better. The sad part is that the "Technical" school I went to also had this attitude... and it wasn't until speaking frankly with other teachers in other "technologies" that they said the teachers who gave me problems didn't want to be out-shined. So of course they're going to shoot down ideas that could be better than their own.

But this also carries into the work place. Why do I have to have log a log of a log? 3 times the work and time for something that just isn't necessary. But because of how people are - and the majorities willingness to accept without questioning, things just don't (and can't) change.
