well thanks for the heads up guys. I know you can spoof mac addresses, but i didn't think most people around would be able to (at least where i live). My problem, as you can see (GhettoBSD), is i deal with junk. The only thing i have wired to my router is my bsd box because i'm too lazy to find a wireless card that works with BSD. So i have 2 laptops, a pc, and 3 other wireless devices that have to connect to the router right. The problem is, just with the computers they don't all want to share the same security. WEP, WPA with or without shared keys, its a problem. Once the security is in place only some can connect. Its a real pain, thats why i resorted to mac filters:P
Maybe i should stop using junk i find laying around and buy some decent hardware eh? What would you guys recommend?
hmm, you know, this is a good example of why we should secure out networks. I personally run my network wide open, but have mac filters so only my devices can connect. But should i just completely conceal my network? DO I risk having my junk confiscated because of fake porn links pervs around me might click on if they got on my network? boo
I agree that people do need to take responsibility. I disagree that it's less of an incentive though... I pirate all kinds of software, I use them until I decide I like/don't like, can use/can't use. Then when I find it works for me I buy it. Although I'm a pirate (it's in my blood) I do believe in supporting products I like so they can continue to put more out (updates and different products). The problem is most people aren't like me (at least in that regard).
But back to my original argument, is that the punishment is too severe. Let's talk about the law they're trying to introduce in Maryland, where if you are willingly on someones wireless network, that's up to 3 years in jail and a $1,000 fine. That's a little harsh isn't it? Considering most who will do that just want to check their email while their inet gets set up at home. 3 years in jail to check your mail? Dropping out of college to pay for those 3 songs they're accusing you of 'stealing?'
I think we really should be reasonable here. And those are 2 examples of there not being too much reason. I'm all for holding people accountable, BELIEVE ME! I want to see cameras on every intersection in the US. I want to have cameras on each sign on the freeway. And I want police/chp units to have HUDs that actively scan every license plate that passes their vehicle. Because that way it'll be easier for them to see cars that endanger my life on the motorcycle. I can just come home, login to a dmv complaint site, file a complaint and let them issue tickets for all sorts of things. Believe me, i am more than willing to hold people accountable for what they do. But sometimes the punishment doesn't fit the 'crime.'
Let me know what you think the appropriate punishment should be for pirating.
I wondered what would happen to that equipment... and ours. When the that spectrum of bandwidth is broadcasting cellphone data what will tv's do if tuned it? Will they make funny noises? Will they blow up my tv? But really, what is expected to happen?
You know, a LONG time ago people said "only crazy people wear foil hats!" Well, they were proved wrong!! My mom puts foil hats on a lot of her customers... or else their hair won't dye properly!@!#!@#!
Although i'm a huge fan of science, i have to say don't underestimate the power of religion. I think we can all agree on basic/common psychology that most people are followers. And those followers need a leader. Religion is that leader. It shows people the 'good way's of being good by helping each other.
Unfortunately, you get some people who want to be the religious leaders and try to add to that. When you talk to rational religious people they will agree that most all religions are the same, because they share the same foundation, the same purpose. It's just in execution that it differs.
I personally believe science and religion can co-exist, i don't see a problem with it. What i do see a problem with is anyone who says "it has to be one or the other." That is not an open mind or someone who is willing to compromise. And that is a whole different philosophy. But with understanding, we can all co-exist and move forward.
basically it's like that guy in the other post about the oceans releasing tons of co2... he doesn't care what the "other side" says, things or 'proves,' they are wrong and he is right. That is the worst person.
She goes on to cite the fact that the RIAA thinks nothing of jeopardizing a student's college education in order to make their point, as support for the MAFIAA/Mafia analogy.
Of course, it's also true that college students think nothing of violating a copyright holder's rights either. Why should the RIAA respect this attitude?
On one hand, you can pay $100 worth of downloadable content from 99 cent itunes or what have you, on the other you are losing a college education. Not quite the same.
Although on paper it's as simple as black and white, it's not the same for real word circumstances.
I personally like to argue the "i don't smoke, only once in a while" being the same as "i don't kill, only once in a while." But this is one example as being the exception to that rule. The reason is on one side you have a small dent in some already rich persons wallet, and the other side a kid who doesn't have much cash (most likely) is going to lose all he has and most of what he could have had for a while trying to pay of the debt. Not really fair.
That and too many of my tapes and cd's have gone bad and the music publishers have told me to shove it and buy another copy!:P
I'm just glad that they are putting more product out! I signed one of the crazy petitions to bring them back and am very happy to see this happen. I hope it works out for the fans like family guy who made a comeback.
Oh I know he rode a bike, but it's the same thing as with a motorbike, it's usually the bikers fault. I work in Pasadena and see people on bikes all the time. I GUESS they think they're like a motorcycle and get in all lanes of traffic during heavy congestion and then get pissed off when cars cut them off or split lanes with them. That's just how it is when you're on 2 wheels.
All the bikers i've met who've had biker ending accidents (regardless of severity, mostly because of being scared) have admitted to me it was their own fault. I know i've fooked up more than a couple of times, but i've been able to avoid major problems. But when you have a places packed with bikes like UCSB you see bikers doing all kinds of things that one would probably not do out of a college area. So that's why I asked. Also when you're younger you know, you don't tend to worry as much when cutting off a car:P
But yeah like I tell everyone, the only person looking out for me on the bike is me! That's why I give as much room to all cars around me as to avoid major issues.
PS You should take up bike riding if your pops is still doing it, it's a great form of exercise!
i lived in a city that had about 120-130,000 people for a year. It was pretty small by my standards (los angeles). I could get around without any issue any way i wanted. In la, it's not the same.
That being said, i've evaded death 6 times since 2003 when i started riding a motorcycle full time. I'd say 4 of would be death givers didn't even know they almost killed me.
What it really comes down to is how safe you are. Ask your dad if he was a safe rider, and then ask him to answer honestly.
The reason it's a fact that most motorcycle 'accidents' involve only a motorcycle is because it's usually rider error, no cars needed. But for the few who are involved with cars its a real bummer.
I don't know but I think you guys are making it more complicated than it needs be. Why can't it go in order from Region -> Country -> ISP -> City -> local switch?
You can still use basically the same client except that it'll just prefer to use "the closest same isp" peer.
The only problem I can think of, if anyone strictly enforces this, then you might not be able to reseed the torrent because no one is allowed to connect to you!
Oh so much to comment on! Well, having studied manufacturing and becoming an engineer in that field, we actually learn to use both, although we really use metric more than anything else.
To answer your interesting question, you can easily adjust to whatever the customer needs. If they give you 4"x9" dimensions you work with that. If they give you 2x3 cm you work with that.
At first i was like WTF but just like anything else, as you use it more you get used to it. I actually ended up liking metric more simply because you could be more precise. All of our weights for calibration and various assortment of measuring tools were all metric.
I can't speak for other schools or shops but that's how it was in mine!
Um cough cough yeah cough. You know, one of the reasons I like macross/robotech is because of the possibility of it coming to reality. Yes I know i'm crazy/a fan but! It is possible, at least in one mode.
I think that with the british harrier, they found out it isn't easy getting power. So i'm guessing as soon as they get a new power supply that doesn't weigh so much, we'll be one step closer. I haven't followed the development of the new raptors too much, but I've heard/read that they can handle more G forces than the human occupants, so thats a start right? Performance of the air frame is good. All we need is power supply and transforming planes YEAH!
The thing about a veritech is that it's shape is plausible, as opposed to other ships from different series. That's why I'm a big fan. I can dream, can't I??
BTW, why is it called the canada arm and canada arm 2? Does that mean the US has the US Ship? And it's the ISS-Europe? I just found it interesting that canada names it something so simple but so bold. I saw that's not it's official names but, still pretty cool. I think it's good they take pride in their accomplishments and contributions.
I will work to develop the Socrates Oracle DB that handles all DB's on the ISS-world. lol
Well, let me put it this way, pretty much all of the houses there have huge plastic like water tanks on top of their roofs. The reason is, if water service was interrupted, they would still have a water supply for a while.
That being said, i guess you could say it is a sort of gravity feed system. The water pressure seemed low to me, compared to what we have in the states, but it still came out just fine (more than enough). When they were filling up water pitchers, it would take a while because the water pressure dropped considerably when you ran the water through the filter instead of bypassing it.
I also checked out the links. The filters look like what i saw! Under the maintenance link, that's exactly what it looked like! It was a nasty slimey coat that washed off easy enough to expose the white-like rock!
I am surprised that silver kills bacteria naturally! That's really cool to know. Must find bath soap with silver lol
Well, i'm not sure what it was and neither did anyone I asked. It's just something they all know they need to have. Although the stone was white/greyish and very smooth.
They did have a purification station though before the water entered the cities main stream plumbing, a osmosis sort of deal. I don't know if that'll handle the rest of the contaminants.
You know I am surprised about charcoal. I always thought it was weird to put those in fish tank filters but, they also run whiskey through charcoal to give it a "pure, clean taste." The acura TL and infinity g35 cars have charcoal air filters. I need to learn more about it! It's very interesting.
Although i agree with everything you said, what do you say about people who can't drive? I mean the engineers who design streets, cars and all other accessories to driving?
Sometimes the engineers make a big deal out of something so simple, which is the joke amongst us right?
Expensive sony vaio sits on your pants (lap), several inches away from your testicles.
Expensive sony vaio has in it an expensive certified Sony rechargeable battery that is even more likely to overheat than an aftermarket one.
Expensive sony vaio has cheapo cooling heatsink and causes overheating issues including notebook shutdowns and has spawned many "freeze" sites to document problems.
Expensive sony vaio has customer service, but it is so bad it's better not to use them. Actually more expensive to use them than to just ignore the problem or replace device with another brand.
Next step left as exercise for the student.
I mean honestly, spending a few grand on a vaio i thought i was getting a quality product. Everyone said they were second to IBM (at the time) think pads. I had already learned my lessons through the years with all the junk they make (walk mans, cd mans, car cd mans, head units for cars, home stereos, tv's, radios etc etc) that has broken down on me. But i trusted everyones advice and ended up getting burned in the end.
So whats worse? buying a product you know is a copy, and it performing as expected? Or buying the original certified version and have it perform as a copy? At least you get your monies worth with a copy. But the thing is, you can buy decent copies that don't have "sonny" on them. A few companies make decent hardware for the same low price.
One last thing, people make this argument with harley davidsons. They but them for the name not the quality. Believe me, my Honda ACE performs better than any new harley davidson and has more miles on it than most harleys will have in their entire life time, and that's just not a coincidence. It's a completely different manufacturing mindset. People will swear harley until they die or run out of money (because they bought the harley boots, jacket, gloves, t-shirts etc). But they'll never get on a reliable japanese bike because "if you don't ride a harley, you don't ride a real bike."
When I spent about a year in Mexico, I was surprised (for some reason) that every house had a filter on any tap that would draw drinking water. After months of wondering what type of miracle filter that apparently didn't have to be cleaned often was in the tall 750ml filter container of stainless steel, I opened that bad boy up with permission and found a rock.
It was a little slimy and probably ready for its cleaning, which I performed. But it still amazes me that they can have this in place, where those of us in the US have to use these disposable filters that are expensive.
Now I really don't know how effective those rock filters are, but one thing is for sure: people don't get sick when they drink water that's been through that filter.
I have yet to see a filter like that here in Los Angeles and will gladly buy several when I do. I haven't been back to Mexico for a while but when I go back to visit, if I haven't gotten a filter here i'll definitely buy on there. The only draw back is that water comes out a little too slow for me. But that's why you let it go for a while and fill up extra water jugs and what not.
One last thing probably worth mentioning is that there was always this "crazy talk" about amoebas in the water," and that is why you couldn't drink water straight from a tap without a filter. For the entire time in Mexico and all the places I visited, I never got sick from drinking the tap water. I even got to see the source of the water from the river that flowed from mountains!
Perhaps he enjoys having a penis, and doesn't wish to do anything to jeopardise that. That sure didn't stop John Bobbit! Look at how he ended up, being on the Howard Stern new years eve party, raising money for "his problem" and well that's about it I think.
That wasn't a whoosh, it's the result of when you mix your waters when you're told not to! Just a side effect.

Maybe citizens who have some free time on their hands and the experience/clearance necessary can make an organization to do these things for free for Govt agencies. That would be pretty cool because it could be a non-partisan group who does this.
But really, what are the odds that ANYONE in govt would want this? Too bad though.
just to add to your rant, this is a good example of why judges should have term limits. I don't comprehend how anyone can do that sort of job for life, it's not right.
Just like every other human their opinions change over time. Their rulings at the start of their career and the end should be the same. If not this shite happens.
They should take a morality test so we get decent people. No not perfect, just decent.
And after serving 10-20 years as judge judy telling people "don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining," that's it they'reeeeee out. They're a disgrace to the american people and only hurt the people who need protection like wikileaks.
This is why everyone is scared of going to court instead of being happy. The justice system is a place to obtain justice from people who are doing bad things to you. Now it's a place to defend yourself from someone doing bad things to you. The laws have been written and amended so normal common fold can't use the system unless you have high $$$ attorneys who just want the $$$.
I should note there are many good attorneys who aren't after $$$. anyhow this is a good example of why it sucks so bad. We're all "just like the rest of them" in the judge's eyes.
well thanks for the heads up guys. I know you can spoof mac addresses, but i didn't think most people around would be able to (at least where i live). sorry about my messed up quote earlier.

I think we really should be reasonable here. And those are 2 examples of there not being too much reason. I'm all for holding people accountable, BELIEVE ME! I want to see cameras on every intersection in the US. I want to have cameras on each sign on the freeway. Let me know what you think the appropriate punishment should be for pirating.
