Anyways, aside from THOSE people, what makes you think so many people are really "bad off?" I used to think USA was THE best country in the world! Then I grew up, learned about different cultures and compared them to "the US."

Having lived abroad for a little while, i find this "middle age" living not so bad! It's amazing how much ingenuity is necessary and applied. And, when compared to the US, having a car (forget even a 'nice car'), and 2 weeks vacation isn't that important as long as someone you know HAS a car, and when you regularly take trips to places "Americans" (US Citizents) pay decent amounts of money to visit.

If you want money, the US is the place for you. If you want luxuary, the US is the place. But if you want to live decently, healthy and still have time for yourself and your family, maybe these "3rd world countries" aren't so bad.

I am actually trying to save money up so i can move to mexico and start a few businesses that i know would take off. It's really interesting because at first, you'd think "that's crazy!" 8. What I do on Media Cataloging Software? · · Score: 1

My system isn't a system at all. Because of the LARGE amount of legal optical media I own and my "custom" discs, i've run into this problem lot's of times!

Usually, i start sorting things out on my HDD. Once that is at capacity, i've moved them on to CD's. Now with DVDs cheap as dirt, i've been using those for a while. My problem has always been the different DVDs.

So what I do now, is have about 5 logictech cases of 320/420 disc capacity. Each one is broken down into a "theme." I have 3 other smaller cases, maybe 120 disc capacity. One is for my Mixed Martial Arts, another is for my "video," another for my music videos, another for my "audio" and books on tape, another for software. Then in my smaller one's i have my necessary tools -- software i throw on every install i do.

That doesn't sound very helpful, but it really is! Each disc is labeled by folder name/type and number. So for example, MMA d1 would have say, early pride fighting vol 1. MMA d2 would have early pride fighting, vol 2. MMA d14 could have pride 26.

I try to keep these in order, because it's much easier after i create a list of what each folder contains to keep track of. I've seen list managers, but none do what i want, and most are for HDD solutions anyways. This allows me to constantly add to my collection easily without having to make it a big deal. Stick disc in, ls and print to file, append to "master list" and voila! It's updated.

When i am looking for something in particular, i just search for the title and it shows up, telling me what folder/volume it's located on. It may not be pretty, but it works really well, for me.

At one point i was making a website i could share with "friends" so they could see what i had, if it was of any use to them, but it was very time consuming. So i gave it up and never found a better solution.

Right now i'm at 750GB on my main system, and under 500 on my bsd box. I've been burning to dvd like crazy because i like to binge on the news groups! And as of late i've been into torrents because i found some interesting Japanese animation (Go Baki and Hajimi no Ippo!) So they'll be added to my collection soon.

Soon, i hope to have the time and considerable money to buy some large HHD's, a low watt-efficient cpu/PS setup that'll allow me to throw everything on a few TB HDD's and allow me to have it directly hooked up to my tv.

Not have domestic wars has put our factories behind because all the war torn countries are rebuilt with the latest technology of the era. While we're stuck with factories from the early 1900s.

Sure, we don't need wars to make bitchen new factories, but because money runs our country, it isn't going to happen. It's cheaper to send our crap to be made in the orient or south american countries where we still pay less than building new factory AND employing "americans" to man it.

Unlike any canadian territory where french nor english was the native language, "Spanish" - the american variation of Spain's official language, was already present in California and many other "western states" long before the US moved west.

The reason why there are so many "latin americans" in the southwest of the us is not because of the millions and millions of illegal immigrants, it's because of the millions of people who lived/settled on the lands before it became US territory. Although i will agree that the millions who keep coming in illegally help increase/sustain the number of latin americans. (Hey, someone said there's a difference between immigrants and settlers, right?)

What are people so afraid of? Surely no one on /. is going to be out of work mowing lawns, working taco trucks, singing Mariachi tunes in restaurants, working "fast food" joints, working at the car wash. If anything, we should be trying to give these peoples more jobs because they'll do it, try to do it well and hopefully "motivate" locals who don't do the jobs back because they can't get hired for anything more skilled and aren't willing to take less pay now.

You know, i've personally never have heard of an illegal alien getting welfare, foodstamps or some other sort of non-humane benefit. I've never heard of one apply for a tax refund either. I'm sure they've gotten emergency room treatment for free at the expense of legal aliens, but standing in line to get money? They must have paid a lot of $ to get a good SSN and ID.

What I have seen is a LOT of unfortunate people living together in amounts/places that locals would not tolerate themselves. If illegals have nice houses in Wisconsin, or Michigan, it's probably because the standard of living is a lot less there than in California. I worked at a site recently where one of the Mexican workers (born in the US) said, "... and i told them i'm mexican mexican" so i asked, "what is a 'Mexican 'Mexican'" and she answered, "you know, mexicans who live in a 1 room apartment with 2-3 families." She wasn't ghetto, and had no accent. But this is what she joked about being mexican.

While i'm sure that many miss the real point of what's going on here, the US always has been a point of inspiration and hope for the entire world. Maybe a little less now since about 2000, but still maintains that appeal. People from all over the world believe that there are streets "paved with gold." They think what they see in the movies is how it is. They want to be able to come here, and live like they "imagine" they can. So when everyone who thinks "they MUST assimilate but don't..." they are wrong. No one who comes here sets up show like vietnam, thailan, japan, russia, pakistan or any other place. They can try to "live like they did at home" but that doesn't mean buying a property, tearing it down, and the building the same crappy structure they had back home.

You don't see Los Angeles being a copy of Mexico. And besides, like i've told everyone after having worked in TJ for a little bit, "the only difference i saw between TJ and California is that California has Cal Trans."

Anyhow, it's time for leftovers from "Beto's." Man those dudes can make some mean fajitas. (thus no insurance) Well, from my point of view it worked out bitchen! It went from paying several thousand to $300 if i remember correctly.

But the sad thing was, while i waited to be called into the chambers, i saw an officer walk into that large waiting room where there was a lot of people waiting for different judges. And this one officer pretty much talked to everyone on his way in. His words were pretty much "not you again, now what did you do?" He had pulled everyone over, and seems to know them well. The worst part was the guy who i was able to hear pretty well because he was behind me, was a bus driver (public transportation). I heard his story and even the officer said "yeah they shouldn't have gotten you for that..." I guess some guy cut in front of him when he was pulling out of a stop and an officer got him for something. Oh, this officer was the guy who pulled me over.

Anyhow, i wondered how many people were treated as i was? Another time, MANY years later, i was driving around in my bright yellow car. When i noticed a sheriff following me, i told my buddy. I was working my way to the main street. I like to take the scenic routes, so it was obvious this officer was following me. My buddy said i was just paranoid - which was a good thing too! So i finally made it to the main street and i just had it. I'm sure the officer ran my plates and saw everything was good. But maybe it didn't help how i looked, even though i was "clean cut" at the time. Maybe its because i had a pakastani in the car with me? Who knows, right?

I pulled into the sheriff's station and parked my car. The officer pulled up right up to my rear bumper. I got out, and walked over to his window. I asked him, "is there a problem officer?" He answered WITH a LOT of attitude, "did i pull you over?" I said, no, i guess not and walked into the station to file a complaint. I asked how to file a complaint and it never happened, the supervisor on duty never came out and i figured my buddy would be pissed for waiting more than 30 mins in the car. Maybe more than 20, but it was a LONG time.

Anyhow, the point of the story is that i didn't do anything for him to be following me, especially since it wasn't for 2-5 mins, but a nice long while. Coming out of a fairly nice neighborhood and driving the car i had, didn't make sense. The good thing that came out of this, is my buddy who said "you're just paranoid" started to notice things he hadn't before. He drove a stock BMW with some nice rims and a sport kit in the adjacent city. Well, he started noticing lot's of sheriff's following him. One time it was so bad, at around 11 PM or 12 AM, a sheriff stopped that was following us in the middle of an intersection making cars wait for him because my buddy made a quick right. I guess the officer couldn't decide if he should cut a car off to keep following us or just let us go.
