The accelerometer can be a very immersive addition to gameplay, but it needs to be used with great restraint. You should always ask "would having a button be simpler and less frustrating?". The vast majority of times it seems to be a tacked on, frustrating, gimmick.
Still, the potential is excellent, and when used well it can open up a whole new style of gameplay. I'd like to see some learning routines implemented. Have the player 'dodge' a few times, for instance, and have the computer learn what movements on the player's part constitutes a dodge. This would be similar to training a speech recognition program.
And Shining Force is still selling today on the Wiiware channel. That's the exact same version as the Genesis game, same graphics, same everything. I expect it's made more money in the last two years than an average 'new' pc game.
"NEWARK, Ohio -- Central Ohio authorities have filed felony charges against a 15-year-old girl accused of taking nude cell phone photos of herself and sending them to high school classmates.
Police say the Newark Licking Valley student was arrested Friday and held over the weekend. On Monday, she entered denials to juvenile charges of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and possession of criminal tools.
A spokeswoman for the Ohio attorney general's office says an adult convicted of the child pornography charge would have to register as a sexual offender, but a judge would have flexibility on the matter with a convicted juvenile.
A prosecutor says Licking County authorities also considering charges for students who received the photos." (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,434645,00.html)
True, I don't know if she was convicted, but she was charged with a felony.
The item in question was legal at the time and still legal now. They censored an image that wasn't, never was, and still hasn't, ever been illegal. Evidently, it was censored because they just didn't think it ought to be looked at. Nobody should be given that authority.
The historical view of Americans that the government is the enemy is one of the greatest forces for good in our nation. The fact that so many Americans are losing that view is contributing greatly to our current social problems.
Governments, even the best of them, should be viewed as a necessary evil.
True, RE has historically had crippling controls. Fixing their controls with RE4 and moreso with RE5 isn't a problem in and of itself, but I think the threat from monsters should have been cranked up correspondingly.
Want to know a survival horror game? The first time I played Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. I approached it as a first person shooter for about one minute; then I realized that one bullet from a unseen assailant can instantly kill me. From that point on, I crept forward as carefully as in any zombie-infested underground research lab. A survival horror game loses its horror if you ever get to the point of seeing a monster onscreen and thinking "I can kill that, no problem." A single zombie in the middle of an empty room should still make you nervous.
It's hard not to think the huge furor about the bonuses is being whipped up as some sort of distraction, or maybe to fuel outrage to get some other obnoxious bill passed.
The bonuses are unseemly, true, but they seem to be guaranteed by the employee contracts, and so all the yelling in the world by unhinged congressmen are not going to change anything. Plus, financially, they're an insignificant part of the bailout moneys. I wouldn't mind businesses reeling in the bonus amounts in the future, because of public wrath, but I fear that congress is preparing the public to ram through something like even more punitive taxes.
Ok, I took it on the chin for the team, and looked at the page.
It's basically an ad for one of those history/cache/cookie scrubber utilities, and it has some shock pictures about which it says "Look what is in your cache right now!!!" (They're lying, of course, the images are loaded from their server.)
There are three small images: One bestiality, one bukkake, and one 'lolita[1].jpg'. Plus a bunch of blank frames that would probably all be malware if I was running internet explorer.
The bill of rights pertains to individuals, not states. The framers knew their philosophical shit; rights belong to all humans, and only to humans. The 2nd amendment was more fundamental than either of those issues. It wasn't just for the defense of the states, it wasn't just for defense against rogue governments. It was a recognition of the fact that it is right that all men should be allowed to fight to defend their life and freedom. It is as morally wrong for the government to deprive people of the tools to defend themselves, as it is wrong to deprive people of the ability to speak or worship.
And here's some advice: Far smarter people than you and I disagree with you. Far smarter people than you and I agree with you. That doesn't indicate who is right; but it does mean that calling the other side 'ludicrous' indicates you are probably approaching the issue irrationally.
We'll have to settle for one out of three, right now: They're working hard on the corruption angle. They seem to be making corruption a requirement for a cabinet appointment, for instance.
That has more to do with economy and wealth than race. It's not a white superman saving the black skinned; that's focusing on trivialities. The relevant issue, and why the story is constructed the way it is, is that it's a guy from a rich 1st world saving people from the poor 3rd world. The hero could be a black American, and it wouldn't make any difference. The setting could be an empoverished Asian country, and it wouldn't make a difference.
Where Africans are concerned, the game seems to be suggesting, bloodthirsty savagery just comes with the territory.
Or, more charitably, it suggests that Africa is like every other continent, with both decent people and thugs.
Put it this way: What should Capcom have done? Made the villains a mix of all races, despite the true demography of Africa? Portrayed all uninfected Africans as virtuous, making other races the villains (which is racist in itself)? Or (the true lesson game developers learned here), avoid the hassle and never set a game in Africa, because it's a no-win situation?
I don't think that RE5 on the 360 or PS3 could ever compare to RE4 on the Wii. The use of the pointer in RE4 made the game control perfectly. No matter how good the graphics on RE5, it's going to seem like a step backward. A bit like playing the same FPS on a pc with a mouse, then on a console with a gamepad, I suppose.
Not at all. The Nintendo DS has sold over a hundred million units; that's 2-3 times more than Apple has sold iPhones. The moment Nintendo begins competing against Apple in the 'portable gadget' field, they will immediately become one of Apples biggest competitors.
Plus, Nintendo has a similar emphasis on quality and user experience as Apple, and much moreso than most of Apple's other competitors. However, I think Nintendo isn't interested in direct competition, but is probably trying to exploit an untapped market (like they did with the Wii).
The only reason food crops (such as corn, which is horribly inefficient as a fuel crop) are used is due to the insane subsidies that the US government offers them. Of course, the US government would never subsidize proper fuel crops such as rapeseed, flax or linseed because that would step on the toes of big oil.
I don't think big oil is the problem. I think it's more about keeping the corn farmers happy.
Actually, neither of you know for sure whether it is or not. Both of you should stop saying actually, because that should be reserved for statements of fact.
I agree. For a while, Blockbuster online was a FAR better deal than Netflix. I felt like I was taking advantage of them; you could get three movies in the mail a week, AND turn those in for three movies a week from the physical store. I couldn't keep that pace up for long.
All the advantages Blockbuster had have slowly faded away, though, and I will probably cancel soon. Netflix is pretty much the same value, but wider selection. Is there a rental place that has both a wide movie AND game selection?
Yeah, but online downloading has a long way to go before it's mainstream. Yeah, I know you do it, so do I. But most of the nation doesn't even have a broadband connection yet. There's still at least 5-10 more years before physical rental locations go away.
1) Actionscript is slower, although with 3.0 it's gotten much better. However, the flash interface and UI may be more responsive then Java. As far as user perception goes, Java often feels slower, because of its really bad UI.
2) Yeah.
3) I'd like that; Actionscript 3.0, is a really nice little language, completely apart from the Flash environment. Easy to program in.
4) Yep.
5) Yes, and tied with 6:
6) Yes. Java is just too big. Very overengineered for most sorts of web applications. Good for big apps, but for a simple calculator, animation, game, or whatnot, it just has too big of a footprint. I'd like to see a Java-Light, I suppose; core java with 90% of the libraries and cruft stripped out. But then it probably wouldn't be any better than Flash.
7) I have a hunch the flash that crashes your browser is probably really poorly made ads; if they weren't in flash, they would be in Javascript, Java, or some other language, but still written with no regard to security or stability.
This is, of course, ignoring the fact that 10-15 year old games are routinely played on computers today.
Point her to a random comment on Slashdot. Typically, women will believe the expertise of a random stranger far more than their husband.
Why, I don't know... but it's the truth, and nearly globally applicable.
(they say it will be better than on a LAN)
They are obviously lying. While I try to be charitable, I can't imagine any plausible circumstance where this could possibly be true.
I'll help you.

No they don't. That's never been a right. It happens all the time.

And as computers get faster, the relative performance of Java compared to other languages doesn't improve one bit.
