Or is that "More than Free"? I'd consider getting a free operating system AND revenue to be MORE, not less... but perhaps that's semantics.
It seems like somebody was desperate to write an anti-google story. He seem to be highly suspicious of the carriers for daring to want to compete with the iPod and the Blackberry; than, he seems to be surprised that Google PAYS people to use the version of the Android OS that Google actually PROFITS from.
There's nothing really nefarious here. It's how it was intended to work from the inception.
I worked for years for the marketing arm of a major mail order retailer. How intrastate commerce relates to sales taxe is settled law. You need to collect and pay each states sales tax if you have a business presence in the state: Typically, this means a storefront, warehouse, or paid employees. I don't know Amazon's structure, but I imagine they have employees in at least a couple states; they should collect taxes for those, and no other.
Arguing that they 'should' pay state taxes in a state the law doesn't require them to is wasted breath, unless you're advocating the law be changed.
I call BS anyway. There are only 50, is it too much to have some schmoe simply look the damned tax up on a sheet of paper? WTF?
There are far more than fifty. If they collect state tax, they will have to collect county and city taxes, and keep all data current. There are thousands of unique tax structures in the US, and it IS very burdensome. Not impossible, but it will probably require a full-time position and some IT investment. Trivial to Amazon, of course, but FAR more complicated than just looking up percentages from a table of fifty state codes.
Carl Jung was hardly a crackpot, but believed in the existence of a collective unconscious as well as in synchronicity
He was born in 1875. That's modern times; he was educated, he was exposed to rationality, and yet he still believed in that mystic nonsense. Some beliefs are simply and obviously wrong, and it's no sin to mock them. Hell, sometimes it's worth mocking even correct beliefs.
I did some research, because I actually was interested in that question. The quick answer: Popcorn Kernels don't pop from exposure to a vacuum. It slightly, but not greatly, reduces the temperature at which they pop. However, low pressure and vacuum environments create fluffier popcorn after popping.
There would be problems, sure. People and organizations might protest. The publisher might be wusses, cave from the pressure and decide not to release it. But the Federal Government would not ban it. A few of the dumber states might, but it would be overturned.
And it would be very tough to make obscenity charges stick; anything with redeeming artistic merit isn't obscene.
That is true; look at the institutions in the EU. They certainly aren't equally evil... although I think I'm interpreting that in a very different way than you intended.
I think we offer them some silks in trade for their minerals as a stopgap, build a wonder in a city on the border to make our culture more tempting, and wait for their cities to pledge allegiance to US.
Everyone knows that FOX news and Rush Limbaugh are to be compared with the National inquirer when it comes to news.
That's roughly accurate, although saying "everybody knows" is silly. Now, do you realize that CNN and MSNBC, and yes, even NPR, are no better? Or do you think they're magically better because they correspond more closely to your beliefs?
In fairness, the notion that all nations and cultures have equal value has been prevalent in certain quarters (including higher education) for decades... at least in the (paradoxically) more advanced cultures. It's both foolish and dangerous, but it's nothing new with Obama.
I think people mistake condemnation or criticism of some cultural issues with racism... as if decrying, say, the barbaric behavior of some middle eastern cultures was equivalent to being racist against Arabic people. It's ridiculous.
I would think that if we went 'spongy', it would make sense to send up a few cubic meters of a densely packed raw material and then extrude it in space; after all, the whole point of those materials is how low density they are. One jar of popcorn kernels is easier to transport before they're popped.
Do popcorn kernels pop when exposed to vacuum? I may have solved the issue, right there.
Dragging Apple down to their level in the public's eyes wouldn't be a bad strategy.
It's not, but I think it's unnecessary. MS just needs to stand back and let Apple do it to themselves. Anybody knowledgeable about tech knows that Apple is just as evil as MS, and that knowledge is beginning to filter out into the general public. I really anticipate a collapse of the 'cool' shell that apple has built around itself in the next few years, and they'll have to actually begin competing on merit. They might do well, because they sell a decent operating system, good computers, and a not too bad mix of portable devices. They're very competitive everywhere except the price/performance ratio.
This isn't an illegal search. I imagine it's similar to when an officer finds marijuana on you when they're doing a legal but unrelated search. It's still evidence of a crime, and charges can be filed. I don't know if they WOULD or not, but they certainly COULD be.
In other news, people with lots of money have more freedoms.
A general statement can be disproved by a single counterexample. That's been done, so you're obviously wrong. Trying to assert a fact by repeating yourself over and over... well, it isn't a valid argument, and shouldn't be seriously put forward by anybody who's age is in the double digits. Did you stamp your foot as you typed that?
The United States is a major part of the civilized world, and DOES support capital punishment, hence your comment is obviously incorrect. Your argument is wrapped around redefining words so you can pretend you're correct.
What remedy does the GPL call for? As I understand it, it is to either release source or stop distributing. MS handled this error correctly. Calling for stronger sanctions would just drive more people away from GPL'd software.
Hopefully, no loon will start demanding just that... "MS is legally required to opensource all their code, now". All that would do is convince people to NEVER touch anything GPL'd.
DVD quality is 720x480. That's much lower resolution than modern consoles and PCs put out, and yet a decent movie looks far more photorealistic than anything they can render. I think a decent game at 640x480 res, with good animations and realistic aliasing, looks better and more realistic than a crisp HD image without those. By focusing so much on resolution, we've been putting emphasis on the wrong thing.
And still it was the primitive Russian Army that won the war.
Yes and no. It was certainly a huge part, but you can't take one piece out of the complicated web of events and focus on that as the reason. If Britain had fallen or sued for peace, Germany would have gone from two fronts to one, and Russia's overwhelming manpower might not have won the war for them. Or, more simply, if Hitler had behaved more sensibly and less aggressively during the second half of the war. The 'primitive Russian Army' was able to overwhelm the German army in large part because the Germans overextended themselves.
When both the victor and the loser are free to publish and distribute information, there is a certain bias toward TRUTH. Often that is more powerful than propaganda or nationalism. You're neglecting the fact that reality does have a certain bias: Facts. It doesn't always overcome disinformation campaigns, but it can and has.

Al Gore, Michael Moore, Ben Stein, etc. Fiction can be presented with a sheen of authenticity and authority that can sway a lot of people.
You think the Amish are stupid? I'm not sure there's any justification for that belief.
Replying to myself...

I imagine there are lots of people that would pay a million dollars to not show up on Drudge.

Just FYI, they also discourage people from ever clicking on the link in your sig, because there's no indication where the link really goes.

Why, specifically? Which mod, and why?
