  1. VUZE ? on EU Funds P2P-Based Internet TV Standard · · Score: 1

I applaud the positive stance shown by the EU here but doesn't the VUZE layer in the latest version of azureus do this already ?
there are probably lots more similar bits of tech that do this , its not rocket science after all.

The problem here is the licences not the technology , most video content is released with licences that restrict sharing in this way.

I think this money might be better spent creating , documenting and maintaining a legal framework for releasing p2p content rather
that creating yet more tech that will be hamstrung by not having the content people are most familiar with so not being able to
gather enough peers to get decent speeds.

The other big hurdle with P2P is its reliance on filenames , i like to rename most of my downloaded files to something that is
more meaningful to me and adheres to my local filenaming convention. This prevents me sharing stuff in my archive.
A simple name mapping layer would increase the amount of seeding dramatically.

  2. Why the secrets ? on White House Must Answer For Missing Emails · · Score: 1

I'm still having trouble thinking of a legitimate reason for a goverment to have secrets from its constiuents ,
if you can't do your job with out full public disclosure then you shouldn't be in office. The press would be
far less hysterical if it had more information and most importantly the public would be empowered to make
meaningful decisions about which politicians to support.

Nobody in government should be doing things that need to be kept secret from other countries because
we are all supposed to be working together these days. Or are the treaties just for show ?

If people want secrecy when they are in public office it should be allowed only if a referendum gives them
a mandate to do so for that specific situation.

I realise that this may seem naive to some people but anything else is just playing in to the hands of people
who should not be trusted with power.

As you said the checksums give you some measure of authenticity , the other bonus with the peer to peer distribution method used by the pirates is that the good stuff spreads and the bad stuff dies out.
Yes you do still get some trojans and malware but only usually if out of desperation you download a less popular link , this situation would be mitigated if companies where officially release software via torrents.

The key point here is that the content is free and is evaluated on its suitability/quality which gives the whole operation evolution style filters which will always trounce the farmed monoculture of
commercial distribution that chokes under its restrictive licencing practises. With more open licences ISP could operate local mirrors and caches thus saving bandwidth for more fun things.

Anyone care to guess how much of the total bandwidth of the internet is taken up downloading O/S updates ?

    Viva la bittorrent !

    > With Windows, there's a support number you can call

They will either send the police round to bust you , tell you someone has already activated your copy and you need a new one or just tell you to wait for a patch
which will come out at some point cost you more money . Microsoft phone support is a myth but you can buy support for ubuntu from canonical.

    > Or you can take it to a local computer store

Have you actually asked your local computer store about linux ? i bet they are just itching to start supporting linux.

I haven't found the ubuntu forums to be snobbish to polite users, i have however found some users to be down right rude and they understandably don't get
answers or only get negative responses. If you have a problem with this then you should probably avoid human contact in future.

If you feel you are genuinely being victimised then i believe you can complain about the invdividual user in question , if you have a case then you will be listened
too , i suspect however you just like a good whinge because you do not include the facts of your situation.

Given that most devices are built with to run with windows its not suprising that lots more devices work with it , most of the devices that don't work with linux
use hybrid hard/soft designs that are built into the windows subsystem or custom driver structures. I would be more inclined to say that you have some ropey
hardware but if you won't mention what it is then you will have to forgive me for ignoring your request for help.

For me the real problem here is that microsoft and apple are creating the expectation that computers are easy to use and simple to grasp , they are not , it
takes time to learn anything , if you don't put in the time dont expect the rewards.
