If you mean most hardware works with XP then I'm not sure thats the case , having drivers for XP is one thing , having drivers that are actually usable , stable and well behaved is another.
In my experience this is pretty much the same deal with Ubuntu , there are quite a few drivers that don't work , the ones i needed worked but that may be because i buy my hardware with linux in mind.
Any company seriously considering using Ubuntu would do the same . Indeed there is a growing trend for specifying Linux compatibility for new systems as this usually gets you better kit and also means you can move later.
To my mind the issue here is that windows has encouraged some bad hardware designs which are unusable on other platforms and the Microsoft marketing engine has somehow made people believe it's some kind of virtue.
I totally agree that sunny D and its ilk are an abomination , however its wrong to assume 100% fruit juice is that good for you either
If you drink half a litre of apple juice its like eating about 5 apples without drinking any water . Thats a lot of sugar, even though its much healthier fruit sugar , it will still start to attck your teeth and cause problems for delicate stomachs . A little bit of water is a good thing in this case.
That said i'd rather have 100% juice in the shop and dilute it myself , its much more resource efficient for me to add the water , it reduces the transport weight and requires less packaging.
I think the real issues here , as with most food issues , are our level of consumption and the lack of attention paid by consumers to the tricks food producers are using to sell the stuff.
i'm seeing it the other way round on my sites but i'm pretty sure thats because it keeps getting attacked by spambots who all seem to pretend to be IE . I wonder how much this effect contributes to the image of IE's dominance .
Also because of all the badly written browser identification routines a lot people fake their browser ids regularly.
urm you don't have to send the css everytime , if your server is setup properly it should have told the browser to cache the css file via an http header. I suppose the score 5 was for informing us how little you know about CSS.
People design computers around operating systems , its a good thing , it makes sure they work.
I always buy systems made of parts that i know work with linux even if the likleyhood is that it would never be run on them. IME this has always meant better kit with more reliable designs and more chance of continued driver support.
79 dependencies that took apt 28 seconds to download and then about 2 minutes to install taking 80mb , wheres the problem ? or would you rather have one package stuffed with wheel reinventions ?
I'd have thought the Hardware manufacturers would sell their xmas computers with an 'upgrade to Vista' token that would give the buyer a free or cheaper upgrade to vista.
Shurley even people dumb enough to buy another M$ OS would resent paying for it twice.
Seems like a good idea at first but if you have 5-30 minutes downtime per year that means one very quick kernel patch per year . If you are really concerned about uptime applying patches in a timely fashion is just as important as hardening the system to start with.
Obviously starting with solid proven code should mean less patches are needed but nobody is perfect and what about new functionality ?
That kind of uptime is IMHO more a function of your hosting environment and the hardware you choose , this is going to be a waste of time for anyone but the carriers who can afford it . You would do better to have multiple servers in seperate locations , a nifty routing/caching setup and a sensible Develoment/Production regieme.
Still its a nice stick to beat microsoft with , even if it is a bit too bendy:)
Reusing old machines as routers is a good idea , but , they do use far more power than a small dedicated router would . Of course if you get your electricity from a renewable source then this is not a problem . These providers will then replace the electricity you use from the national grid with electricity from renewable/sustianable sources.
That said , even if you don't have clean power reuse is still better than recycling but please consider your power sources .

nice idea , except the ISP's are all bogged down with paperwork and compliance for the new snooping regulations to be able to pay attention to this.
That said i'd be very suprised if the botnets didn't use some kind of tunneling to get to open relays instead of the obvious connection to port 25.
