  1. Re:Responsibility? on Proposed Legislation Would Outlaw "Cyberbullying" in US · · Score: 1

Spanking and child abuse are about as similar as lovemaking and rape. There is a time and place where spanking is appropriate. Sometimes the kid is too young to be able to really get through to them with tamer punishments. Sometimes it's absolutely crucial that they learn this NOW, not a few repetitions of the bad behavior from now. It's a legitimate parenting technique in certain situations... it just needs to be used sparingly. A parent that spanks for every offense, or spanks their 10-year-old who is old enough to not need it, is a poor parent... not parents who spank in general.

Your "I refuse to have anything to do with Sony" rant is pretty childish. They did wrong. Let them be punished, and then let's go about our business like normal. We don't have to refuse to do any business with all divisions of Sony for the next $foo years because of it... there is such a thing as overkill.

uhm, can we sue them? What the fuck are we going to sue them for? And how does this have anything to do with OSS? Sony chooses to make money off of developers by selling them devkits. Now that the PS2/PSP devkits aren't worth as much, they're willing to let them go for free. That's how business generally works... when something is worth less, lower the price.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't discern any sort of reason at all why you're suddenly dragging OSS into this. Not to mention... sue them? WTF?

Depends if that's what the players want or not. A good DM is one who runs the game so that everyone has fun. A bad DM is one who runs the game so that people aren't having fun. If you have a group of players who want hack-and-slash (which is my preferred mode for D&D, incidentally), cramming tons of roleplaying down their throats is bad DM-ing.

I have a friend, for example, who speaks fluent Japanese, but he almost never uses it... really, he wouldn't fit into any reasonable tally of "Japanese speakers", if trying to determine how the language is commonly spoken. If you have a better way to measure how commonly someone speaks a language, by all means, go ahead and use that.

As soon as I heard from a friend what Obama had said, I went to look for the actual words that came out of his mouth, thinking that it might have been blown out of proportion. I found the quote (wasn't hard, of course), and sure enough, it wasn't being blown out of proportion.

So don't go assuming I didn't do any research into it, just because I consider him elitist and bigoted as a result of his words. That'd be quite the unreasonable assumption.
