I downloaded Miranda after reading your post (being an avid Trillian fan). I installed the necessary plugins to get me onto the MSN, Yahoo, and AIM networks. It has crashed on me twice now while changing my options. In my opinion, Trillian wins hands down for being stable. I'm all for open source, and I'll probably even poke around in some of the gaim code later (since that is what I use on my iBook), but if it crashes all the time, being Open Source doesn't mean much to me since I'm less likely to contribute to a project that I don't enjoy using
I don't have an airport base station, only the airport card. I'll look into VaporSec though. Thanks.
If WEP is good enough then just turn it off
I completely disagree with this statement. Yes, WEP is very weak, but if there are 5 WEP networks in the area and 25 networks with no WEP, guess which ones I'm going to try and connect to. If someone wants to break in, sure they can. But having WEP will discourage the casual intruder since there are so many other non-WEPed networks out there. WEP is good enough until you can set up IPSEC. Once that's up, sure, turn off WEP.
I use an OpenBSD firewall/gateway as my wireless access point and my iBook as the client. Does anyone know how I'd do this under OS X? The last time I looked, the built-in IPSec implementation was not really user accessible.
I thought that the story would have to do with drug-related weight measurments becoming the 1. defintion of kilogram in Webster's or something. I mean, I knew the U.S. was losing the "drug war" but I'm glad it hasn't reached _that_ point.
I don't know iptables (I switched to OpenBSD right before 2.4 was released), but I know pf and I don't consider myself fscked. I would trust someone that knew pf more. And I'm not being elitist. It's just that OpenBSD has the best track record, so if someone took the time to use what is arguably the best tool for the job, then that's who I'd go with.
It's possible. I'm the last person to say I didn't. But I have pretty much a stock install. About the only thing I did "extra" was to mount a resierFS drive that stores mp3s and such (which isn't accessed much). It's no biggie. My RH box is there mainly as a file server so I don't use it much for the desktop.
Same sort of deal: cushy seats, free popcorn and soda, you have to be 21 to get in, but each ticket costs about $18. I'd say totally worth it except that my car window got smashed in their parking lot during the X2 opening night.
To be fair, they share the lot with the Multiplex that is part of the same building, but when I asked managment "Where are the cameras for the parking lot?", they said "The landlord won't allow them." I called the landlord and they said "What? They can have cameras if they want. It's in their land lease". Kinda soured me on the whole joint.
Win2k runs fine on my P3-933 with 256. I don't doubt that Win98 runs fine on your older hardware. XP Pro though runs only so-so on my P4 1.6 with 384. I don't even have crap running in the background and it's a fairly new install since I wiped everythign when installing XP.
My point was yeah, it probably will _run_ on an 800 Celly, but will it run well? Eh.

PS, I have RH8 running on a 600 celly and it is dog slow when running KDE.
When was the last time you tried running a version of Windows on an 800MHz Celeron with only 128MB RAM? I wouldn't worry about pirates using these for XP.:-)
This comment doesn't make sense to me. Patent lawyers represent their clients/employers. They do what they're told. Yes, they advise their client in patent matters, but if the client says "don't go after this" or "hey, aren't they infringing on my patent?" then the lawyers listen. It's not the lawyers that got greedy, it was the patent holders.
Unless the prior art is disclosed as prior art and why the prior art doesn't apply when filing the patent application. Patents are all about "I came up with this novel idea/invention/whatever and this is how it is different from any existing system, even if the existing system is 99% similar"
Come my fine boy... let me show you this nifty TabletPC running XP Table Edition (tm). It will solve all your problems. It types, annotates and it does handwriting recognition for your equations. You only need to pay a one time fee of your soul... I mean your whole income... I mean... oh never mind.
but obviously he was too subtle for a lot of people, who apparently failed to pick up on the fact that he did care about people, a lot.
Nah, I figured that all out. But it didn't make him any less boring. Maybe it's my personal preference, but I don't go for the anti-hero. If I don't like the protagonist, I generally can't get into the story. I tried reading the Thomas Covenant books three time and could never get past the first 100 pages because I thought ol'd Tom was a jerk.
And you definitely can't beat the Polom and Parom in FF2 (US version) when they turned themselves into stone to prevent the walls from closing in on them
Yes. Yes, yes, yes! This is exactly what FF8 didn't have. When that happened I was like "What?? What are they doing? Nooooooo!" Maybe it's because I was younger and naive. Maybe it really was better writing. But I had no attachment to any of the characters in 8. I spent half the time just wishing Leon or whatever his name was wasn't such a douche. Granted 7 was very linear and for me the first real divergence of the series into doldrum, but at least when Aeris died I felt like I had an emotional investment in a character. 8 just blew goats.
FF8 was awful. FF8 made me swear off the FF franchise. OK, maybe I'm being a little melodramatic, but seriously after trudging through disc 1 and only half of disc 2, I couldn't even finish FF8. It was boring, I didn't like any of the characters, and the battle system was sooooo 1997.:-) I just didn't have the energy to try 9 (I hear it's great) or X. Sorry, but FF8 sucked and was the last "fantasy" I bought.
Maybe your car should limit you to the speed limit of the state you bought it in.
<Rumor> I've actually been told by a car afficinado friend of mine that there are chips in some cars (the Subaru WRX specifically) to limit the max speed of the car to what the original tires are rated for. I have no proof honestly, but the guy knows cars pretty well. </Rumor>
The idea that comes to mind is that they will start making 'Apple Only' music releases that can only be played on Jobs-approved hardware
Considering Apple, as a great a product as they have, only has around 4% of the OS market, I have trouble believing that this could happen if music were distributed on CDs. Yes, they have around 21% of the mp3 player market and would be able to do something like this if this were an mp3-only world, but I think the CD is going to be around for a while so I wouldn't worry about "SteveJobs of Borg" just yet. Bringing people away from a standard (RedBook) is very unapple.
you won't be able to move most things, which is basically the point I was trying to make before: if your business relies on proving MS technologies to your customers, then you're pretty much stuck with dealing with MS's licensing crap
That was actually _my_ point. Everyone here is saying "Just switch to Linux". "A mac can do everything you need" and my point was that, "No, they really can't. It's not that simple". Then I cited examples and here we are.

I'm guessing you don't live in Boston (or NYC, or ___fill_in_the_blank_major_city___) where EVERYone lives in an apt building.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. My setup is more like this:
Internet -- OpenBSD firewall -- OpenBSD WAP/Firewall -- iBook w/ Airport card.
