I too feel that the hardware in smartphones is good enough. Their downside is that it tends to break pretty soon (in my experiences between 2 and 4 years) so you have to replace it sooner than later because of that.
I try to buy phones with user replaceable batteries for that reason

Well, obviously you know that the UI is something different from the core OS so OpenBSD could be run on a smartphone by having a touch interface similar to Android or iOS.
When docked with a keyboard and mouse you could run the traditional desktop UI and applications.
I'd love to have an smartphone like that but sadly Android and iOS seem to have won and that looks less likely every day

  4. I used to have a Galaxy s4 with 16 gigs of memory and had storage problems all the time. I did have 20 or 30 apps installed (not an unreasonable number IMO) but no multigigabyte games or something like that but I still had to clean caches/delete Whatsapp images and videos all the time just for being able to install updates.
Now with a 32 gb LG I have no problems at all.

Yes, it is, at least where I live (Spain) maybe it isn't where you are. Spain doesn't have any problems with mobile internet capacity or speed (there's good working 4g in all the medium and big cities) neither most people have space-constrained smartphones so I don't know why they would publish it here and not on other first world countries.

The problem is that at some point your product is gonna be pretty good and adding more things usually makes it worse. The undelying problem is that the users are not the customers they're just the product and so what they want is a secondary concern.

Yes, it's obvious Google-style user monetization. The problem is that they haven't given an option to opt out of that by paying money. Even apps for smartphones most of the time let you choose between free with ads and paid without.

Nope, it's not a "non story". All versions of Windows may have had some quirks but none before 10 has installed applications without the user's leave or forbid him from stopping the installation of updates, or displayed messages in the very same OS that are publicity for Ms' products or forced itself on users of previous versions without warning. Windows 10 is just user hostile.

I'm currently still on Windows 7. And yes, I love my games. I'll have to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 or whatever at some point but if things are as bad as now (and nothing suggests they'll get better) I plan to dual boot and use Windows as a games console

I'm a pretty lightweight user so I don't notice the omissions the lite app has (probably has) and also has the chat integrated so I don't need to install yet another app just to reply to Facebook messages.
I don't know much about mobile development but they must be using some huge libraries/frameworks because I don't know how else many apps like Facebook weight over 100 MB in size

Obviously the intent is making it so hard to disable so that few users will bother. They use a similar strategy (reverting default programs to Windows built ins from time to time) to get you to use the included apps.
This is disgusting behaviour. That's the price we pay for Windows being the dominant desktop OS. If their marketshare was 50% or less they wouldn't dare to do that
