This issue seems to reappear every 2 years or so. each time this argument is rehashed, a number of software manufacturers develop some titles that might attract more female gamers. Opinion: The problem i see is as follows. Analysts and marketers assume that female gamers do not care for the same style of game as the male ones. Females are thought to only concern themselves with puzzle games, card games and fashion oriented games. I personally think this is an outrage and wonder why more women dont stand up and tell the marketers what they think of them. I think the better distinction should be between those of us who would prefer to frag one another (boys and girls alike) as opposed to the milder set who want something more mellow like myst (which i personally consider evil.) What it comes down to is marketing.. and the marketing dollar works the same way as any business venture. It goes to the market with the highest return. Without regard to gender, action games are more popular and tend ( except in the case of *yuck* myst ) to have much higher monetary returns. I know my fair share of people on both sides of this issue and dont mind a game of computer hearts now and then, but Im not about to buy the software in a store when I can play it free on a number of online services.
Action sells just as sex does in advertising.
I would be happy to see a magazine devoted to more though oriented/puzzle type games, but Im sure its circulation might not be as big.

This has been a test of the opinion broadcast system.
Since the dawn of new technology (nt), Microsoft has vowed that they would take security matters more seriously. Security is a much larger market now than it was 10 years ago. NT security in win2k for the most part amounts to not much more than nt4 with its additional service packs. Some registry keys have moved locations and some have even changed but its not enough.
even if you put out a super secure os, it doesnt help when you use it with an exploit laden web server (iis).
Sure microsoft has worked to make the system more secure, but without an overall picture, they will always miss potential security risks. Not to say that other systems arent problematic but a lack of forethought will always bite microsoft in the butt.
In every community whether it is a real life situation or just a computer simulation, there are varying forces which drive the success or failure of that community. This phenomenon, very similar to grouping of individuals in order to exclude/denote/defile, is common wherever different views are expressed. As the old proverb says, there are bad ones in every lot. The truth is that any issue which cannot be in the real world where differing opinions cause incoherent outbursts and outlandish claims will not be solved on slashdot or any other internet medium. In the real world, being polite to another person is governed by a community whether it is a sated doctrine or just implied. On the internet, people who express a dissenting opinion already know that they are targets for such aggression and therefore feel no obligation to conduct thier business with any degree of politenes. There is a growing sense of intolerance where an unfavorable viewpoint is hostily shunned rather than discussed in a positive fashion. People feel as though thier voice outweighs any others including those of the masses. people have learned to fight against any idea that is not immediately palatable. There is often a huge majority whos responses mirror this sentiment. I find that on occasion, I do not agree with the reasonings or rantings of the author of an article ( or a post for that matter ). Being the selfish person that I am, I find that responding with my own views in a logical and explanatory way, tends to get more favorable responses as well as more respect from my peers. My final and most important point is this.. Opinion articles are always up for debate. But there is no reason to flame an opinion holder for his/her opinions. They are just that. The retaliation I see to this article is from people who feel like they were targetted by jon after making comments on his previously posted articles. But this is only my opinion:)

Well, After reading the slashdot article, I went out and purchased one of these units. I am sure/. publicity is the most amount of business they have had since they released the thing.
Out here in San Jose, They actually had the unit on display.. but I doubt that the sales person could have told me about its capabilities.. I didnt bother to ask. The going price at my local circuit city was $149 out the door and I got one out of 10 units they had.
First of all.. the fact that it plays mp3's is awesome and I am glad to support new technology that shows promise like this.
Pros: 1. The first disk I put into this unit.. which is an mp3 disk i have had for a year or more worked the first time and played beautifully.. Only a few songs seemed to fail but gave no indication why. 2. The setup screens are simple and dont require mush intelligence. Available setup options are based on which mode you are currently in. This is definately a low level consumer device. I wont trade it in for my sony 5 changer, but they will learn to live together happily. 3. For those of us who are "po" and cannot afford heavy duty entertainment setups, the documentation covers setting up this unit with a desktop stereo.. Dont know why.. but it looks like they knew who thier market was..
Cons: Im sad to say that the brunt of this review relates to defects in the unit.
The mp3 interface is very weak and untested. In the first 2 minutes there were already bugs that any engineer would not let out the door. 1. There is NO way to navigae up a directory and thus return to the parent directory without realoading the disk. You can navigate by song number and ideally reach every song by its relative number on the disk, but once you have navigated past the root directory you cannot return. This may be possible if there is a song located in the root directory as well as sub menus. 2. when scrolling through directories a file with less than an 8 character name will inherit the remaining letters of the name of the last song in its position. Its a visual bug and doesnt affect play, but its very unprofessional and confusing. 3. Some song wont play. Ther is no indication why, but some thing just didnt play. I have nothing out of thee ordinary on the disk and most songs are encoded at the same bit rate. 4. Because of the limits in the naming scheme, If you have multiple files with the same beginning characters, you will have multiple songs with what looks like the same name. this can be corrected if you spend the time to name your songs accordingly keeping this limit in mind. 5. When playing a vcd disk, the play button at the bottom of the remote will not start the video, rather the enter button is used. Both buttons should function in this case. 6. The documentation makes only 2 mentions of mp3 in its entirety. Not only was this feature an afterthought, It looks like they gave up support for this early on. Sounds like a couple computer companies I know of around here.. Where features that cant be made to work adequately, are taken out of the documentation and marked as un-supported.
Thats my speil/.
Overall, I like the unit and will contact the manufacturer about a possible bios upgrade for the unit.
despite its shortcomings, this signifies the beginning of a new revolution in the entertainment market. I see alot of promise for these units.
Even moreso, I await the second generation where consumer awareness will yield a more heavily tested product.
It is illegal to prevent free speech over publicly funded mediums. The internet is a tool for everyone.
On the other side, usenet servers along with web servers, ftp servers, irc servers and the like are the sole property of the organization that makes them available on the internet. Content that flows across these private systems and networks is within the sole judgement of the operators of that service and they can, for any reason, terminate, cancel,or dispense with materials they deem unfit.
This may not be a blow in the favor of free speech, but is the law and is logically founded.
In the future I see similar issues with email, web traffic, and things like irc. People believe that email is a right and a service, but dont realize that at the drop of a hat, it can be taken away.
The government is not in control here..
If you dont like your isps censoring practices, then you sare free to switch isp's. There will always be those of us who despite out viewpoints will always defend the rights of others to have viewpoints. no matter ow dispicable they might be.
Contact your ISP @home and urge them to comply with this mandate. Any action could be easily avoided provided that this issue is resolved before the deadline. There is no logical reason why a conscientous administrator would not want to limit the amount of duplicated spam cross post to countless usenet groups.
join the bandwagon.. dont have a patent.. call now.. operators are standing by..
have a patent.. you could always use more.. you imagination is the limit.. hurry quick before all good patents are taken up..
You know its difficult nowadays to find things to patent just to claim your stake in this world. If I cant collect on others prosperity.. how else am I going to support myself. I thought about purchasing the microprocessor, but that isnt wide enough.. not exclusive enough to give me the standard of living ive come to expect from abusing the law and others. I could patent usb or some other emerging technology that looks promising.. but wait, how do I cash in on all the years and technology that is readily available. I got it.
sir, id like to place a patent on silicon and copper.
check out Corel Linux. The control panel under X looks alot like the one in windows. In another revision or two.. you wont be able to tell the difference.
There are two great utilities.. One that is obviously very well covered and one that is a little less well known.
Xconfigurator - tried and true.. this application is the closest thing has to plug and play. it will detect or attempt to detect your video card and then probe you monitor prior to writing your config file to make sure it has a good chance of working. you only have to specify what kind of monitor you have and what resolutions you want.
XF86Setup - This is my heavy duty alternative. when xconfigurator doesnt work perfectly, this is usually the answer to my problems. this requires that in addition to the Xserver for your card, that the VGA16 server is installed. It will boot into x in 16 color vga mode and allow you to specify every piece of x related hardware including the keyboard and mouse. you are able to configure the mouse down to the model and the number of buttons. The video card can be chosen by name or chipset. Once you have finished configuration, the x server shuts itself down and restarts with the specified hardware. If all goes well then it will prompt you to save the configuration. At this point, it will also let you make small visual adjustments to the vertical and horizontal refresh rate using xvidtune ( also required ) and automatically save the changes into the configuration.
I stand corrected.. I didnt think the trickle down theory worked. I guess the starving engineers in the microsoft labs will be able to feed thier pet lawyers.:)
On another note, you cannot mandate preference. If you prefer one produt over another regardless of the price or performance, you are entitled to make that choice.
When switching from one platform over another in a large organization, you have to take into account many facets.

AM radio has been around for many years and why not. It has been a source of information or entertainment for as long. DSL is a new technology with a lot of promise in the future for high speed internet access for the masses. Claiming that DSL is an inferior standard because it interferes with technology that was designed prior to computers is premature and idealistic. How do we know that AM radio wasnt a bloated technology using more than its required airspace in frequencies. the truth is that there was not way to determine the future at the time that AM radio technology was developed. the truth is that You dont have to throw a rock very far to find other examples of things that will suffer as a result of interference from AM radio. On one side, AM radio has stood the test of time. FM has only partially been able to dethrone the technology that brought us those charming 50's tunes and early radio shows. People have been unwilling to give up this medium and nowadays it is more of a special interest tool than a widely accepted communication medium. On the other hand, DSL is a new medium technology with lots of promise in the future. the problem is that its only a stepping stone and other improved technologies based on it are already in the works. Just like anything on the internet, its life-line is likely to be 3 years or less when its replaced by the new and better thing. Im not advocating removing AM radio or DSL but, in the best interest of the future, shouldnt we re-examine the technology we use and make sure it is extensible enough to last into the future. Competing for frequency space wasnt an issue when there was no competition.. now that there is.. some implementation questions have to be asked. Its certainly than having interference with FM. wouldnt that be spiffy. LW

The "good times" virus hoax that went around and was recycled multiple times is a good example of a hack (prank) that will live on indefinately. It was the most overused, out of proportion social engineering project to have abused lusers.
LW
The "full" version of windows in the non-upgrade distribution is for sale with a new computer purchase only. The price of this OEM sku is less because of the licensing agreement that M$ has with the hardware distributor. Copies of this software sold without accompanying hardware are illegal based on the licensing agreement. LW
