Far more valuable would be a breakdown of the most common infection vectors for rootkits right now. Is it TCP/IP stack overflows, Active-X controls, e-mail trojans, or old-fashioned human error?
From what I understand, putting a Sony music CD into your CD-ROM drive is a common rootkit vector.
On a more serious note I've noticed a trend in my daily computing experience that tells me that viruses and worms may be on the way out. Although still dangerous and prevalent, I haven't had any encounters with them for the past 5-6 years. However I've had multiple encounters with trojans and ad/spyware - and I hear rootkits are on the rise. So, are the days of worms/viruses like Lovebug and MSBlaster numbered?
The constant popping up is annoying because it locks the desktop until you hit Cancel or Allow. I hated having 5 prompts come up within 40 seconds just for installing a wifi card and anti-malware apps.
- omnipresent (it's *always there* unless the user disables it) - omniscient (*knows* when to act) - omnipotent (strong enough to temporairly prevent users from doing something potentially stupid)
There was one FBI agent that knew what was coming, however political pressure and his superiors thought he was crazy. He died two weeks before September 11th. I linked to a documentary about his career in the FBI, its about 80 minutes long but I believe it was worth my time.
I live around Richmond, VA as well. AFAIK I have digital cable with a HBO subscription and its still filtered. The on-demand HBO content is just fine though. Comcast is also holding a $35 late fee over our heads b/c of some crap they pulled by overcharging us. I wish FIOS was avaiable where I live - my friend got it and he's very pleased with the result.
Pokemon has made a resurgence among my classmates in the last two years. Everyone is playing the new Pokemon Pearl/Diamond, and there's a few 'retro' people like me that still play the original Blue and Silver versions. Sure, it may be a kids game, but when high school seniors are playing and enjoying updated versions of a game, I think we can all agree that Nintendo did something right with this franchise (although the anime series is lacking).
Listen, if we want to beat this thing, write your representatives in Congress and make sure they understand the Will of the People.
Also, I skimmed over the proposed legislation. Apparently it affects *all* forms of copyright infringement, including counterfeit prescription drugs, etc, not just MAFIAA stuff. But the wiretapping is kinda spooky, as if I don't have enough to worry about already with the Bill of Rights shot to pieces. Good thing I still have my gun... and I plan to keep it.
Also, Sen. Freddie Kruger states, "If you want to listen to your iPod, sit down and listen to it," Kruger told WCBS-TV. "You want to walk in the park, enjoy it. You want to jog around a jogging path, all the more power to you, but you should be crossing streets and endangering yourself and the lives of others." Another article on the subject
Good deal, Mr. Kruger! I'll go get my chainsaw and start widly running up and down intersections all over Manhattan chasing people that look at me funny... while listening to an iPod!

Who does this remind you of?
There's a utility called Unlocker for that, pretty handy when a mystery program is holding up a file from deletion.

Believe me, sometimes the meatloaf in my church's freezer looks, smells, feels, and tastes like catfood. I hate my job.

There are worse things than goatse out there, ya know. Be careful.
A friend of mine bought a Dell Latitude D820 about 3-4 months ago from the Small Business section. He didn't have any trouble at all.
So, I guess Plans 1 through 8 didn't turn out so well...
That's funny, all I heard was a loud "NOOOOOOOOOO!".

I can see the movie documenting this 150 years from now:
Scooby-Doo and the Ghost of the Spam King.
