I am not an American but I always assumed dumpster diving was legal as long as you weren't going onto private property (such as jumping a fence).

    A quick search pulls up:

Almost every human activity ultimately manifests itself in waste products and ... any individual may understandably wish to maintain the confidentiality of his refuse. State v. Smith, 510 P.2d 793, 798 (Alaska 1973) (nonetheless holding that police could search garbage without warrant).

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the police may legally search, without a search warrant, trash or garbage that individuals put out for collection. California v. Greenwood, 486 U.S. 35 (1988). Read the case here.

The argument has been made that garbage from different residences is "promptly intermingled with other garbage in the truck such that its origin can no longer be identified." California v. Rooney, 483 U.S. 307, 322 (1987) (White, J., citing respondent's argument).

An interesting read here for those so inclined.

Prisoners of War? Which war is that, exactly? Is this the "war on drugs"(TM) or the "war on terror"(TM) (two equally abstract 'fronts')

It's very easy to claim falacies with such certainty when you don't leave your lounge room huh? To be fair, you are actually closer to the truth than you may think as plenty of people get carted off for months (or years) in prisons without even being declared a combatant.

With 343,786 sales* in the first two weeks, I don't think they are too worried about proving anything to you. I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding your post, but do you really expect someone from Valve to read your post (on /. no less), check your email address against the steam user database and contact you (I imagine it would have to be in person with a bag of free trinkets; after all you were seriously considering buying ONE COPY of their game) to assure you that you won't be disconnected? When was the last time you read an EULA when installing a game? Do you even realise what rights you have been handing out for years?

I was able to download the packages from steam a week or two before the box was released to retailers (in Australia). A friend of mine ended up canceling his pre-order (through a store) and downloading it as well.

*The sales numbers are, admittedly, for XBOX360 but I imagine there would be a similar (if not larger) number of users on the PC platform.

Although German ficken may enter the picture somehow, it is problematic in having e-grade, or umlaut, where all the others have o-grade or zero-grade of the vowel.
