"And he just got reelected so you know his stand on this isn't posturing for next years election. He seems genuine and worthy.. even though I typically do not like democrats. I guess he is one of the few good ones left."
Mr. Sumdumass -
I want to say a genuine "thank you" for having the guts to say what you did. I've been watching you spar with other progressives on this site over the years. I'm very liberal so we disagree on a lot of stuff. It's good spectator sport to watch you & spun go at it.
Still, it's tempting for me to dismiss you as narrow minded, but I don't because I'd hate for you to simply dismiss me as same. I'm glad I didn't, and it's cool to hear you give props to Wyden.
Thank you so much for the impromptu cosmology lessons!
If you have some time, I'd love to get your insight on something that has puzzled me for a while: How is it that galaxies are "clumped" together? Wouldn't matter be evenly distributed after the Big Bang? What am I missing?
"vsync? Tearing?? Do you have a screenshot of what you mean?"
It's difficult to get a screenshot of this since it's only visible while playing video. Imagine a camera panning across a group of people. When you watch the resulting video from this shot, a person's legs and waist might appear offset from their torso and head -- like if you took scissors to a photo and cut it in half horizontally, then slid the two pieces relative to each other.
It's very annoying to the eye once you start to notice it. I'm sorry if your viewing is ruined from here on out...;-)
Sorry for an off topic comment here... -- But I'm a little surprised there hasn't been more discussion on slashdot about Carly's run for public office. Has this been covered on/. ?
Personally, I don't think she'd be good for California. Yet I'm still curious to see what issues she'll bring to the table. Funny, I haven't heard much from Feinstein & Boxer lately at all.....
Minor point of correction: A Watchtower pamphlet would have come from a Jehova's Witness, not a Seventh Day Adventist.
Although -- as I know from my own upbringing -- an SDA pamphlet would usually be no less sanctimonious. They really do get off on their own self-satisfied perfection.
But it can be a real puzzle to read slashdot at 3 and then try to follow the continuity. So ostensibly this thread is about Slimy Drug Companies, and then here's a post talking about how salmon get their coloring. How did we get here from there?
Not complaining at all, in fact I love it. It's just interesting to me.
Automatic -5 Flamebait (or something) for me, but being a creationist, I can say that I have never heard of the position you just laid out....
Well, I can't comment on exactly how wide-spread this belief is, but I have several relatives who believe Christ will be returning to earth ANY DAY NOW. Accordingly, they think that environmentalism and respect for the planet is a waste of time. My uncle in particular: he won't recycle, doesn't care about the ozone layer, etc. "God will be back any minute now to fix it all up."
It drives me nuts. You know, I really don't care what you Christians believe. But when it leads to asinine, selfish behavior like this, I don't know wether to be mad, or just depressed.
Note that I'm not saying *you* believe this, just thought you should know it *does* exist.
I would love it if someone more knowledgeable than I could comment on this:
I seem to remember hearing or reading years ago that it was expected that planets would naturally form roughly in parallel to a line in Pascal's Triangle. i.e., smaller planets really close and really far from their star, and larger planets in the middle distances.
Has anyone else ever heard that? If it's true, I would assume that for all these giant planets they've been finding, there must be a whole complement of smaller planets to go along.
Except that it is Supremely Annoying to go through the first security check; surrender your excess liquids;
purchase a bottle of water in a Secure Zone; ask the salesman if said bottle of water can be taken onto the
plane, be told "yes"; then lose said bottle of water at the second security check. WTF? Can they not get
their stories straight?

Man, oh man - I gotta say that I really wish I could believe these Urban-Legend caliber stories.
Too good to be true, it seems to me. In the early 90's I was working in television prodution, and
we did a story on MRI machines. I clearly remember our camera man walking right *next* to the
machine, and a "grip clip" that he had attached to his shirt started floating in mid air as it gently
tugged against the shirt. It was nowhere even close to ripping air-conditioning units through sheet
rock or dragging back-hoes through the dirt from who knows how many feet away. Am I right, or
has magnet strength really increased many orders of magnitude in the last 15 years?

***MOD PARENT UP***
I'm out of mod points, but parent cuts right down to the heart of the matter: corporate responsibility.
Kudos to you, your site, and your efforts. Thanks for your efforts.

I'd like to know a couple things:
1) Do these images imply that the comet is not spinning? Or was it not in frame long enough to tell?
2) Anybody know if there's an animation or a graph depicting the Deep Implact's flight path?
Thanks!

Rest assured: It is just *your* observation.

There are some interesting and curious products there. I've tried to purchase some of them,
but they always seem to be "sold out".
