I installed Vista just to test it out to see what was so bad. The first thing that struck me was that the boot times are so long, and my HDD activity LED is blinking constantly. I have a high end PC too*. What really blows my mind is how long it took to develop this POS. A 20 second improvement wouldn't be much of an improvement. With my specs and good programming it should boot IN 20 seconds.
* Core 2 Duo E6750 at 3.2 Ghz, 2 320 GB Segate Baracuda SATA II HDDs, 2 GB of Crucial DDR2 800 at 1xxx Mhz (forgot exacts), P35 Gigabyte DS3, and a Nvidia 8800 GTS.
A lot of the cheaper stuff is actually made in the USA. It blew my mind when I first saw it too. Hey, if the dollar keeps falling America is going to look like a good place to manufacture goods:).
Especially since AT&T has the iPhone, and Verizon just doesn't like anyone. Man, I have to find a different cell phone provider. Which are the least opressive?
.. the next Standard Oil, Bell, GM, DeBeers, Microsoft, and U.S. Steel all rolled up into one. Now that we got that out of the way, can we please move on and report real news?
The Radeon 9200 is one of the best performing Linux cards with OSS drivers. Use the X supplied radeon driver, it works well.
"Some segments of the Linux user community, which prefer to avoid the IP-encumbered ATI drivers due to stability and long term maintainability reasons, still prefer the R200-based chips, as they are among the fastest modern video cards with stable open source drivers."
I full heartedly agree that Compiz makes workspace management feasible as I never liked it prior to Compiz. It also makes window management a lot easier, and it all does this with out taking up as many resources are aero. It's just, I see this more for the new comer saying "Hey look at what I can do!", or for someone trying to attract someone to Linux.
I beg to differ. Most Linux users don't use Compiz or Beryl. KDE 4 is in use by very few people and is just trying to appeal to the shiny crowd. Linux users who have been Linux users for more than a few years probably realize that KDE 4 and Compiz are a big waste of resources. I remember trying to run SuperKaramba on my Core Duo, and the use of one widget ended up putting a consistent 40% load on my CPU. I think the only reason KDE (not Linux, there is still Gnome and XFCE) is going shiny is to keep up with Vista and OS X.
You just proved my point. I was saying that most people only go as high as 1600x1200. I wasn't saying that it is only needed for people that run at 1600x1200.
But see, there is no need for 1 GB of RAM for modern gaming. It's useless unless you are running games at big resolutions. Most people I've seen don't go any higher then 1600x1200.
My 8800 GTS with 320 MB runs all games fine at 1680x1050 with max settings. That's pretty much one third of one gigabyte. I seriously doubt you need one, let alone two, gigabytes of video RAM.
Unless you are running quad 32" screens at some insane resolution, there is no need for 1 GB of frame buffer RAM. I think this is more for the "OMG MI VIF CARD HAZ 1 GIGGBYTES OF MEMORYIES!11!" type.
I'm contemplating dropping out of college and working a blue collar job for the rest of my life. The most enjoyable time in my life was working 8 - 6 at a warehouse and coming home to a nice cooked meal and a caring girlfriend.
Where is it!? They need to take out the core of Vista, use it in the standard Explorer (maybe a new 08 theme, but no Aero), and market it to businesses. Like they did when ME and 2000 coexisted. They pushed ME, even though there was the better 2000 alternative.

Maybe they are each part of the same consciousness? Have you not read Foundation's Edge?

You beat me to it. This really isn't a story as this is what OSS is all about.

Nothing is better than seeing the average person stand up to the injustice of big corporation.

Ah! "Screw" that then! That's too much like work. If I wanted to do all that I may as well masturbate with a dumbbell strapped to my wrist.
mmm... slow-mo bouncy moon tits... :: drool::
Seriously though, the porn industry needs to get on this Lunar Habitat train ASAP.
Your mother sucks my Intel designed FootLong that's 11.56743 inches long.
They could just be programmed to look as if they were falling for it! I smell conspiracy!
My ULV Core Duo in my ultra portable doesn't have 64 bit support. It's only a year old.
I realize that fully actually. Going to war with Iran would be the equivalent of the Nazi invasion of Poland.
But see, going to war with Myanmar means going to war with China. No one wants that.

"Sorry for the inconvenience." - God.

Wow, I didn't even know there was a 2008 Server. I actually use Server 2003 for my desktop. My school gives it out to students for free.
