  2. You are SO wrong! on Programmers Will Debut Free MP3 Alternative · · Score: 1

The entire reason that the RIAA doesn't want MP3's to succeed isn't the widespread piracy, oh NO! The amount of money "lost" is negligible and they may be making more money off mp3's from the same kind of advertising as radio.

The reason they are against MP3's is because once it becomes widespread and people start selling mp3's online, they can circumvent the recording industry and they don't have to recive 5% of the CD sales, if they sold it direct, they can get 95% royalties and the recording industry would get 0, unless they get a foothold on the internet (which is doubtful).

Oftentimes, you hear the RIAA and recording companies talk about how bad MP3's are, but they occasionally don't say ILLEGAL or PIRATED mp3s. Think about it, they have said they kinda accepted audio tape recordings, but don't accept MP3s..

REMEMBER: The RIAA is not the Recording Artists Association of America, they represent the Recording INDUSTRY's best interest, and they'll be SCREWED OVER if MP3's or any other internet medium succeeds.

VB is out of the question since i want to be about to program in linux and i don't want to fork over 200 bucks for some M$ compiler.

I'm considering to try to learn C, but C++ seems like a good idea too, i don't know what to learn first. It seems that books for other languages assume you know C, so i guess i'm going to learn that...

Anyone have any advice on what i should learn and/or what books I should get to learn?

  8. The real reason DVD is not out yet on Star Wars EP1 On DVD Confirmed By Lucas · · Score: 1

    AP Newswire

    DVD in the near future?

George lucas announced today that there will actually be a DVD by the end of this year for The Phantom Menace. He attributed all the delays to those damn aliens who had a master plot to delay The Phantom Menace because of pink energizer bunnies that would take over the world and everyone is 'out to get him.'

Rumors have been spreading around because of a master plot by the energizer bunnies to delay the DVD because they wanted to put in a lot of subliminal messages in there. They have already taken over many 'repsectable' organizations like the RIAA, MPAA, DVD Consortium, Microsoft, MADD, the United States government and Al Gore. Only one of the subliminal messages in the movie have been found. In the 39574th frame there is in block times new roman 1 billion pt font, in big letters that says 'JAR JAR SUX.' Apparently children ranging from 3-7 years old were not affected.

George Lucas explains, "The pink bunnies raided my home and screwed around with the movie, they also told me to not release the DVD. I've found out their secret plan, their weakness is someone saying 'Jar Jar is the best' in their prescen..."

I am now writing this story Mwhahaha. You see... I had this DVD version all out, but they TOOK OUT all of JAR JAR in the DVD version. I'm nearly completing the DVD version with Jar Jar binks and all his glory. If i shipped it before, there wouldn't BE any Jar Jar in the movie and I know that that would disappoint the fans.

Also, the pink bunnies took some parts out of the movie and the DVD version will have ALL of it in there. For example, they took out much of Anakin saying 'Yippie.' In the DVD, there will be 90 scenes in the movie where Anakin says Yippe. There will also be a special section where Queen Amidala is naked and petrified pouring hot grits down her pants screaming "FIRST POST! FIRST POST!" All these things take time and seeing that the pink bunnies thwarted my plan on releasing it along with the VHS, i must sadly say that this will be released at the end of the year. The planned release date is 12/32/00.

Often i was seen on television saying that there would NOT be a DVD version, although that was not really me, but rather a pink bunny in disguise. In all the interviews where I have said that there would not be a DVD until 2005, you can clearly see the pointy ears and the fluffy tail. I think the pink bunny is a special kind of Borg...

Some people call me crazy and greedy. I don't see why!

It's things like this that keep me from using netscape.. the little stuff.

    Ripping dvd's using Dvdrip-

    Dvdrip-
http://dvdpiracy.com/ (sure the site seems to be a piracy site, but hey, it's legal for me to copy the DVD's that _I_ bought, so it's fine... i think... IANAL..)

So technically, you don't need to use DeCSS to copy dvd's. Why don't the RIAA go after this site instead? Why just DeCSS? Why are they screwing over DeCSS when there is a true legitimate reason?

Processors don't have anything to do with the internet, and this slogan was decided AFTER Grove resigned? Intel is coming out with crap now (i820) and releasing products that aren't thurowly tested (CuMine).

Either Andy Grove controlled a lot and made sure they don't release crap before he resigned or the new CEO is just another PHB.

What they're saying is so absurd. "We know it's going to be broken and we were surprised it wasn't sooner, but we're still going to sue the people" Why don't they just go and make better protection anyway? bah!

jeez! why don't they shoot themselves in the leg for losing potential customers. Honestly, who WOULD copy DVD's? they're like 30 bucks per blank and the writers are 400... they CAN claim that 'oh the pros that want to copy it can do it now.' Well i've got news for you buddy, it's not that hard to break through DVD's, just get the raw data and stick it on a stamp, whoop de doo. If they're going to make some kind of weird excuse that they need some data that can't be ripped, well we all know the pirate star wars DVD is out in asia, why can't they just swap the raw data file and instant dvd?

So basically the only reason that there would be a reason to sue is for the end user since it's already feasable to make pirate dvd's for the pros (and cheaply too). But the problem is the only way the end user is going to copy is using a DVD-RAM or keeping that huge file on your hard drive and you can only view it on your computer. If you just want it only to view on your computer, there are already DVD-RIPs of VCDs rampant on the internet (as many of people have said on /.) and a lot smaller (remember, image quality doesn't make much of a difference in 21" monitors).

What are they trying to do then? ARGH! I don't know, can someone explain? They're shooting themselves in the leg!
