the pirate party reached in germany 0,9%. Concerning lack of attention from the media, nearly non-existent funds and that stupid name, this is a very strong result for them.
Wow - considering Germany gets 99 seats, just a bit over 1% would have gotten a German PP rep, too!!
At the very beginning I was till hoping the good boys of PP will get the second seat, but by now it's very unlikely.
Still, good initial showing. Congrats! Now time to open a Finnish chapter, as well (we Finns and Swedes always like to argue, but in truth we are very similar).
I have an Asus Eee 100 0HE. It ships sans optical drive, and that was one reason why I wanted it. Considerable power savings, and really, most folks who have a netbook have another more powerful machine. Just rip and encode from CD/DVD to a file and enjoy.
Yeah, that was a selling point for my Eee PC 4G, as well: no optical drive. It just takes up useful space, and I knew I wasn't going to use it. CD/DVD drives on laptops just don't work very smoothly for continuous usage (watching movies or when you have to put the original CD in while playing one of those DRMed games), and for those one-time installation sessions I can use one of my external DVD drives.
The Eee PC and similar netbooks don't have a CD/DVD drive, either, and yet they sold millions. I don't think people are quite as interested in "that cd you just bought from walmart".
Man, that's major suckage. I guess the Nokia phones (with all their non-coolness) have spoiled me in a few areas, one being a MicroSD slot. Being able to replace your music collection in a few seconds does mean a lot, to me. You can put several full-length movies on a 2GB microSD card - imagine carrying your collection of movies with you on several of these - pretty neat, no?
Reading the detailed specs, I didn't see any mention of SD card support. While 7GB is not bad, it would have been much better to be able to extend that flash storage. Sure, one could use the USB mass storage suppot, but it makes it quite a bit less convenient to have to plug in a USB drive to listen to one of the songs you have there. Can you imagine having a USB flash drive protruding from the side of the Pre like that?
I'm thinking that not a lot of US citizens took that offer, though. Unless they are committed to never return to the US again. With an indian salary, they would not be able to sustain their retirement in the US. Heck, if I just think of my situation (I live in Finland) and had to work in Mumbay, I wouldn't be able to afford my mortgage, so I would have to sell my apartment here. OK, so that's fine, I can get a decent apartment in Mumbay for that money (I guess), but then I will never be able to return to Finland again. Unless I become some sort of manager, and I know I never will, because that sort of position makes me vomit.
gog.com is an example of how things should be done: you download the game installer and it's yours to keep. There's not DRM, no copy protection, you can have all the game installers on your hard drive or you can back them up on DVD, Blu-ray, another drive, a flash drive, whatever. if gog.com goes under, you can still install your games.
This is even better than having a (copy-protected) media, even if such copy-protection has been cracked. I always found it a hassle to even think about how to back up those CDs and DVDs. With gog.com, I have the installer files and can do with them whatever the hell I please.
Well, we could do another thing, and it would be great: put a radio AND ultrasonic transmitter on the blackbox. Either can be made to be very sturdy. Then when an accident like this happens, the radio source would help to beacon in on the blackbox. Same with the ultrasound transmitter, undrwater.
Second improvement I would suggest: put cameras on the black box. They, too, can be made reasonably sturdy. Have, say, three of these record everything around them. Even with hight resolution, an intercontinental flight would take no more than 100-200GB of a harddrive, and nowadays we have 2.5" sized drives of twice this capacity. Heck, even a SSD drive for this purpose (more rugged than standard HDD) would be worth it. I mean, a blackbock records a lot of things, but sometimes a picture gives the best idea of What Went Wrong.
It does? I use Chrome on Windows XP, and I can't get it to remember the position and size of newly opened windows. It just won't do it.
And here's the funny thing: I played with some Dosbox games recently, and now I notice that Chrome opens new windows in another size and position - but not anything I told it to. Now a new window is just ridiculously small, so my quest to get Chrome to pen them at a certain size and position became that more pressing.
The problem is, despite pressing the law for their deus ex machina, they don't know shit about the law.
In the case that something happens to the president, the vice president takes power. This happened when Kennedy was assassinated, and it happened when Nixon was impeached. If something were to happen to the vice president, the speaker of the house takes power -- Nancy Pelosi. This deus ex would basically have to be, by far, the biggest scandal in the history of American politics for the Republicans to get someone in the presidency.
So what? I don't care about the consequences, I still think that the president of a country should come clear about where he/she was born, if that is pertinent to his/her eligibility to run for the presidency.
I hope Nintendo doesn't listen to you, for their own good. They did the homework already, about what kind of demographic gets them the more profits, and they nailed the equation. Just because there is one console manufacturer that doesn't cater to your needs, doesn't make their strategy a bad one. You have Sony, Microsoft and a host of PC game developers catering to the likes of you. Surely that's enough?
I for one find the "hardcore gamer's games" boring and unplayable. I could complain why doesn't Sony bring more fun games to the PS3? Its amazing hardware could make for a great experience for those games, but you don't see me or anyone else complaining to Sony. So you guys play with your crap and we play with ours. We shut the fuck up, so can you.
Absolutely, the Trieste and the crew do seem to be more impressive than a robotic vessel in 2009. Trieste was engineering ingenuity and creativity, and the crew members, well, they had some balls!
Likewise, there are many powerful Democrats that are good buddies with the oil industry and the Saudi royal family. I'm not talking about the Obama administration per se, min you - I can't make any conclusions as of yet.
I do believe that this talented young lawyer will tear into RIAA's case with grace and much carnage. I know it sounds corny, but if he makes the RIAA squeal with pain, he's a bit of a modern-day hero.
Exactly! The situation in the economy, AIG, failing companies, the layoffs, outsourcing etc. is caused mostly if not entirely by corporate psychopaths which have a natural tendency to angle themselves into leadership position (they are very charismatic and manipulative) from which they can achieve the greatest benefit FOR THEMSELVES at the expense of others. Their total lack of "conscience" makes it so that any damage from their actions for them is unimportant. Even if it affects hundreds of millions of people. Even if the profit is tiny.
Actually, in the past Gnome apps (and the Gnome desktop) were noticeably slower AND buggier than KDE. This was the situation from the very beginning up to a couple a years ago when KDE screwed the pooch a bit and computers became fast enough to cope with Gnome crud - so Gnome pulled slightly ahead on speed.
But traditionally, Gnome has always been about buggy and slow.
Take a look at the hideously ugly GTK file picker for an example of why the usability of GTK UIs leaves something to be desired.
True that - but the thing is so fugly that I often think it's actually a practical joke on the part of the guy who developed that POS. I think he's laughing his head off multiple times a day. Or maybe he's weeping: "I created a monster!!!" depending on his morals.

When are the new Bundestag elections due, Martin?
At the very beginning I was till hoping the good boys of PP will get the second seat, but by now it's very unlikely.

Thanks for the heads-up, that's an excellent DVD player. Sadly, since I am in Europe, I'll have issues getting this item.
Also, if it had a VGA output, that would be swell and it would make it a must-have item. Something like the RJ Tech RJ-4200, but without the suckage.

I do agree with you 100%
My problem with DVDs (official ones) is region coding, Macrovision (not all have them) and the stupid menus and FBI warnings you can't bypass.

I hope that progression is both ways: their down and yours upwards.
the manufacturing process is the most ecologically unfriendly aspect of computer manufacture
On the other hand, smoking pot is actually quite environment-friendly.

In the red corner, weighing in at 190 lbs, Prime Minister, former President, and Leningrad's Own Senior Judo Champion Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin!
In the blue corner, weighing in at 240 lbs, Steve Ballmer, CEO and Chair Thrower, looking radiant in his Polonium-laced wrestling gear!
Two men enter the ring, only one leaves alive!
This is one rare occasion when an AC has a worthwhile comment :) I particularly liked the "polonium-laced wrestling gear".

What's this about Obama's birth certificate and why is it a taboo topic? I am really curious.

In case you have not been suspecting something already, that is.
