  1. Hats off to Russian scientists on Massive Radio Telescope Starts Observing the Skies · · Score: 5, Insightful

Unlike the Chinese, that seem to do a lot of "me, too" stuff (which is very impressive, of course), the Russians do work that is nicely complementing the US, European (ESA) and Japanese efforts. The Spektr-R (and RadioAstron) is something novel and unique, and will provide insights in the astrophysics and astronomy beyond the Milky Way with high angular resolution.

Another example is ill-fated Phobos Grunt. It would have been another interesting and unique experiment.

Why wouldn't you want your washing machine last a long, long time? I know I do, and bought a Miele, the only brand that is actually manufactured in Germany (unlike all the others, being made in China). That washing machine cost twice as much as almost any other equivalent, but I figured it will last me about 4 to 5 times as long. It has already worked for longer than any other brand would have, and shows 0 signs of getting old. It seems I'll sooner sell this apartment than replace my washing machine.

Whenever I get some UPS package (not my choice, I am always forced into this option), I wonder in what creative new ways will the parcel be damaged. Broken items, punctures in various places of the package, even folded parcels (3D parcels, that is, where one dimension isn't particularly prominent, either), leaks of chemicals into the parcel, these are all various joys of a UPS-delivered parcel.

The fact that they treat you like an idiot by never telling you when they'll deliver it at your home (and doing this repeatedly) just adds insult to injury.

Cut social spending? The US is already a 3rd world country in that not all of its citizens are covered by health care. To be honest, there is a TON of money wasted because of the ludicrous involvement of insurance companies. 14. Many good comments, but I would like to add.. on Is American Innovation Losing Its Shine? · · Score: 1

...that one of the reasons why, in the long run, USA will lose out to countries such as Sweden, Germany etc. is the high tuition costs for universities/colleges. In the nordic country where I live, education (including university) is free for all - we have high taxes for high earners ("tax the rich") which pays for a lot of things, inlcuding universal university education. These countries are picking up, little by little, from the US. The US is lucky to have many graduate students and postdocs flocking to their universities, but that's not a sustainable model for having highly competitive research - these people will start going back home, as their countries' economies improve (China and India in particular). The US will find itself depleted of scientists, because the high tuition fees guarantee that only the rich can afford the university degree, and those are fewer than you'd want. And if they're not coming from a rich family, they'll have to work through their studies, slowing them down considerably, and having and adverse effect on their academic achievements. Einstein didn't have to worry about working in a cafeteria 30 hrs/week to pay for his tuition.

I feel a few facts need to be added to your otherwise informative post: mercury poisoning is infamous for being detected only months after the fact. You definitely positively must know that you had contact with organometallic mercury (such as dimethylmercury, which killed Wetterhahn), otherwise you will only notice the first symptoms much later.

And as for treatment, which is chelation: dimethylmercury is extremely hard to remove by chelation, since it tends to be re-absorbed before it's expelled. Unlike hydrosoluble mercury compounds which respond well to chelation, dimethylmercury is almost impossible to remove. That's why the methylmercury ion has such a tendency to bioaccumulate (in large fish and humans) - there is no good mechanism for it to be removed, and it is recyrcled in the body.
