Declare all works as of 2010 to be public domain, and no new copyrights will be granted on anything.
Ignoring the fact that no one would be brave enough to try and pass a bill like that, I believe that is a little too harsh as you're not giving time for the markets to adapt and try new models. It'd make a lot of businesses bankrupt.
If you really wanted it to work you'd need to reduce copyright on all products to 10 years. At least there is then motivation for creating new works.
There's a 3D shader technique called Phong shading. If Phong shading was patented then Blinn-Phong would never have be discovered which is a change in math. Blinn-Phong is faster and provides more accurate results.
All software is a form of math, one technique can have completely different looking math but produces the same results such as the prior example. You can not patent math because you didn't invent anything, you just discovered the formula which was already there.
Whatever you think about RMS and FSF you have to agree that getting rid of software patents would benefit everyone, globally in the software industry. From the commercial hardware vendors, all the way down to the hobbyist BSD developer.
I can't wait for it to happen in the states as I predict it will also trigger the fall in the few countries that also allow software patents.
From a Linux desktop standpoint alone it would finally allow for built in support of DVD, MP3s, etc. Some projects such as GIMP won't have to work around patents to get the features they want built in. Open source driver support might increase..
Even from a closed source perspective Microsoft wouldn't have to worry about getting sued and having to purchase massive amounts of patents to defend itself. They could focus of providing a better user experience without restrictions that patents encumber you with.

While I can certainly understand the reasons why some people go with Linux, I have run all but dry of understanding for programmers that willfully pick Windows as their platform of choice.
From you link I believe that whole thing is taken out of context.
Microsoft has some awesome stuff, but it also has some really crap stuff. I believe the quote above is referring to the all windows crowd that do not evaluate their tools and instead just pick Microsoft, because Microsoft is God and nothing is better.

I had these problems with Firefox 2 exactly running the default Ubuntu version. I downloaded the firefox 3 beta 3 from the website and it is so much better it is unbelievable.
- Where as before FF2 would use around 500 meg it now only uses around 50 meg - Flash no longer crashes the browser - Javascript no longer crashes the browser - Those long pauses as it is doing something that stalls the browsers operation are gone.
Thank you, I'll now be switching my services to someone that values my privacy.

Same with clothing except it might have incorrect spelling or didn't quite pass other QC tests.
I don't care about your needs to "successfully fight cyber crime" which to me translates to "successfully sniff out rats".
I care about speed, anonymity and integrity of data.
