    You're under the false impression that people in open source don't get paid to work on it. Here's a cluestick in all the major OSS projects, most have paid developers.

    It's not their 'problem' that it doesn't work on your hardware

    and this is where YOU are missing the point. If Linux only works for certain hardware combinations then it IS their problem because it's either a bug or something is missing.

    There maybe good reasons for why it's missing however that doesn't mean it stops being their problem and to continue stating otherwise just makes you look like an amateur.

    To answer your question, no. A torrent doesn't enabled someone to download pirated content.

    It's debatable where this actually happens however it would either be the peers or tracker server which are to blame.

    A torrent file contains as much copyrighted material as an md5 checksum does, that is to say, none.

    I know that the situation on web cams etc are a lot better now, to the point where skype (evil, close sourced and useful as it is) works with video on Linux now

    It's been working for years. I first used Skype with my webcam on Ubuntu 3 years ago.

    In my opinion (we can only guess) it's not a watermark but something that actually moves parts of the binary around kind of like a self modifying program.

    I find using cheese annoying because when you record a video it's REALLY compressed and looks crap. It also saves it as OGG which makes sending videos a pain to the uncoverted.

    Oh and as usual no obvious way to change the format or quality.

    The way it is now I don't see how Cheese would be usable to someone who isn't computer savy and knows how to change the video format so those on windows can watch it. I'm not saying you can't watch OGGs on windows just that it doesn't come default so to the laymen it doesn't work.
