The ad overlay is probably no worse than those ridiculous network promos that take up almost a good 1/4 of you TV screen in the lower right corner.
I read an article (I think it was here on slashdot) that streaming video traffic this year is greater than all internet traffic from the year 2000. I'm sure youtube is partly responsible for that.
Lets not forget, disk space, servers, and bandwidth aren't free, even though use of youtube is.
We can't hold it against them too much for wanting to earn a little cash to offset the tremendous resources it must take to power youtube.
Streaming flash players are popping up everywhere. If people get pissed at youtube, we can start freetube, with no ads.
Here Here! I agree 100%, it's like you're reading my mind man.
You're right, having MS around does make Linux and other OSes better. Competition is important for innovation.
If there was only 1 OS around, it would become stale, boring, and crappy quality, no matter what OS it was.
Yeah, Walmart is damaging the US economy since it is basically a retail outlet for China.
It looks like in order to keep music prices low, Walmart is going to force artists to outsource musical talent to China, or use cheap Chinese labor for ripping the CDs to MP3.;)
Is getting away from the almost 30 year old x86 architecture.
Don't get me wrong, I love x86, it has been great, and has adapted amazingly into the most powerful computing the world has ever seen.
But, since most software is tied to x86, we are holding ourselves back from hardware advancements. x86 is loaded with archaic instruction sets for compatibility with Windows code that is based on 16bit DOS code.
I'm not laying out flame bait, this is what I read in an article about the future of processors, and moving to specialized co processors.
It was a cool article, I wish I remember what it was.
I don't know why we need a central authentication system for websites. It's just a bad idea.
Even worse when a company like MS is pushing it. I think it's a trap.
They want people to develop opensource apps, and popular websites, like myspace, around this 3rd party auth system.
Before you know it, MS will be sending out their goons to shake down all of these developers who are using it. Either pay up for a license, or rewrite you whole auth backend.
Google seems to be the best with developers and coming up with new technologies. I still think they rule.
Plus they don't blow money on advertising spots.
Has anyone ever seen an ad for Google?
That is a very interesting point. I would like to mention... Hang on...

Yeah, forget that. Just boot it with any Linux live CD and you'll be browsing the files in no time.
And no, this is not flamebait, so don't flag it as such.
I think it's great that MySQL has been successful enough to keep growing.
I also think they should maintain a community (free) version for everyone to use
If it wasn't for the OSS community having free access to MySQL, it would not be nearly as popular.
If you want enterprises to use your product, you need to provide enterprise support.
Support staffs cost money. You need more than donations to make it work.
I think Linux is bigger in enterprise today because of Red Hat. If there was no support model, I know my company probably just would have gone with Solaris or AIX.
Big Companies don't rely on Wiki's and message boards. They need tech support 24/7.
I hope Chinese products start getting better quality. I can't stand hearing about shotty Chinese manufactured garbage coming in this country falling apart and making people sick.
The trade deficit with China is damaging the US economy, not to mention the US manufacturing sector is moving overseas.
That trade deficit is largely driven by big stores like Walmart and Target. They demand lower prices, thus the manufacture must come up with ways to lower the production cost. There you have it, over to China's slave labor while US jobs are lost.
Then, the Walmart workers are so underpaid that they qualify for Government assistance for everything. Now those low prices for Chinese manufactured crap is being payed for by tax payers.
DEMAND QUALITY, BOYCOTT Chinese made crap
Of course it's gonna suck not being free, but these guys, who started their repective projects for the fun/love of it, are starting their own data feed, which they have to pay license fees to do. Nobody is paying them, they still offer their projects for free, and they're dealing with TV info, which is regulated by the FCC, right? I give them lots of credit.
I hope it works. I'll pay. If it helps open source projects, that's great. I'll have to pay for Tivo or DVR anyway.
PostgresSQL. Even Firebird SQL is getting bigger. I like MySQL. I hope a "community" sticks around.
But good for MySQL. They have built an incredible following, all on a free business model.
ClamAV rules, I use it on my mailserver, as well as my Linux desktop. It's great, and it's not a resource hog.
I've even installed ClamWin on some Windows boxes for people. No compliants from them:).
Oh boy! No I can get ads popping up on my cell phone! Great! I bet they burn my mintues too!
I don't get enough banners and pop-ups on my PC.
Quick, who's the first with a tech startup to make a popup blocker for your cell phone?
You think spyware sucks now...wait until GPS goes into play.
Oh man. Wheres my type writer and crank operated phone?
to sue a charitable organization over a logo.
Come on, I never even noticed the 2 organizations had the same logo.
Who's next, the blue cross in Blue Cross Blue Shield?
I never knew about nodiratime, but I already used noatime.
here are my results of each option doing a find and recursive ls: atime and diratime enabled:
time find/home real 0m2.064s user 0m0.200s sys 0m0.232s
time ls -R/home real 0m0.810s user 0m0.142s sys 0m0.144s
with noatime
time find/home real 0m0.984s user 0m0.076s sys 0m0.120s
time ls -R/home real 0m0.791s user 0m0.120s sys 0m0.138s
with noatime and nodiratime
time find/home real 0m2.036s user 0m0.168s sys 0m0.180s
time ls -R/home real 0m0.787s user 0m0.139s sys 0m0.136s
Weird, for me it was faster with just no atime. This is on ext3. Maybe you need a large number of directories to see a boost with nodiratime.
These are just simple tests, and are inconclusive. Your individual results may vary. All natural, no prescription needed! Call now! Oops, got carried away again.
Numerous and belligerent!
Sweet Guinea pig of Winnipeg!
I'm so excited. Futurama is the best.
I named my pet crayfish Dr. Zoidberg, and named my Roomba Bender.
Hahah, yeah, and thus starting a cycle, where an offshoot of freetube2 starts, then mytube then... you get the idea :)

They're referring to the ESX server, which is the VMware host for virtual machines, not the VMware workstation.

It's because there is big money in government contracts.
If someone asks, "how much will it cost to build thing voting machine?"
The people with the contract are not going to say off the shelf hardware will work fine.
They're going to squeeze the government for every cent they can get.
Come on Microsoft! Stop making things so complicated.
Please just make the freaking standard open and available.
People have to stop being Microsoft's bitch.
I got sick of it so I stopped. I hope everyone starts to learn there is more out there.
