i work with many good programmers who can't work in C. C# and.NET is all they know. If you start in a managed language like C# or Java, the syntax of C is familiar, but they don't seem to get stuff like pointers to pointers, stack vs heap allocation, array initialization, dynamic memory allocation, freeing memory, segmentation, pointer arithmetic, global variables, the linker, why header files exist, compiler macros, etc.
They are not incompetent. They are bright, productive programmers who generally are producing good code. Now, i have a reputation of being the guy who can pick up any tech and run with it. It's likely because i'm the guy who had the curiosity to learn C way back when. I don't feel, however, that someone needs to know C to be a good programmer. I was a good programmer when all i knew was Apple BASIC.
He clearly works at a software company where he makes High quality web cam videos in H.264 for a potentially illegal over encrypted game concept they are pitching about Obama's missing open source advisor for non IT personnel. That dude probably is worried he's going to lose his job TO/.
They have debates to make it look like they are really important. It's a bit of cynical hyperbole. However, it would seem like a better approach would be to read the bill in question, ask the people you represent how they feel about it, and reach your own decision.
when you buy a car, do you listen only to what the dealer says? He'll tell u you look good in it. You really know how to take corners well, it's a great machine. Or, is independant research more important? The cynic in me believes the other side of the debate is always the car dealer.
There's a lot of naysayers in here. They are in a sense correct. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Anyone can come up with a game idea.
So, you just do what hardly anyone does, actually follow through and make the game. That will really make you stand out. Now, maybe you won't get your game published, but at least you will have a better portfolio than most people.
Luckily there are so many great tools at your disposal. Unity, XNA, Blender, GIMP, Audacity can all help you make a kickass game. A word of caution though. Your first attempt will be crap. Making games is an art. Don't get discouraged. Keep trying and all that stuff.
His job is to vote yes or no. It's actually not a hard job. I'm not certain he needs to or should be paying attention to do his job well. The R behind his name implies he's going to vote against abortion. It's not his responsibility to listen to the other side of the aisle and all their arguments. His job is to vote the way he thinks the people who put him there want him to vote.
whether or not these guys should be paid so much to do such an easy job is up for argument.
i went back and read the second one. That's also totally legit. Isn't that exactly what happened to Palin? Doesn't password guessing happen ALL THE TIME RIGHT NOW? Computers don't make it hard or easy to guess passwords. people make easily guessable passwords.
I have seen a computer begin to smoke when a fan failed. If the computer hadn't been processing so many triangles the fan wouldn't have run so long, and would likely have lasted longer. It essentially overheated and smoked from processing too hard. There have been a number of highly publicized reports of laptops bursting into flames. I know it was the batteries, but still computers can go up in flames.
Exactly! That's what's so insidious about Apple! They are the only company that makes iPhones. If you want an iPhone, you HAVE to go to Apple! They won't let Microsoft or Google make iPhones so they hold all the cards! It's a monopoly!
The iPad is pretty gung-ho on html 5 so i'd say it's sort of ahead of the curve there. Additionally it's not like OS 3.2 is permanently burned into it's roms. if the whole interweb is html6 in 5 months you probably won't have to throw your ipad in the trash. Apple can and does upgrade the OS.
I'm not really sure what's changed on the web in the past 5 years anyway. I can fire up an old xp laptop and still get to facebook. My iphone is going on 2 years old. The web hasn't left it in the dust. everything still works pretty much like the day i got it.
I don't know many people who even keep the same computer for more than 3 years. Mom can buy a new ipad in 3 years. they will be half the price and 8x as fast. where's the problem?
About the best argument against appliances i can think of is you will get swept up in political battles concerning flash. That and mom doesn't understand that all her apps won't port to an android tablet if that's the coolest looking thing in 3 years.
If the laws that allowed this type of behavior went away, so would the giving.
Yeah! It sucks that people get rewarded for helping people. If there were any justice in this world, we would severely punish charities. Only then could we be sure that the people were truly selfless.
They seem to multiply at exponential rates. I'm constantly throwing the damn things away yet more and more keep showing up in my desk drawers. Worse, some people seem to get incredibly attached to them. Maybe it's the pleasant purring they emit when nestled snuggly in a floppy drive.
Some people at work seem to adopt them. I say there can't possibly be any data of significant value in 1.4mb, but these floppy analogs to cat ladies just can't bear to get rid of the disks.
I can't wait till a Klingon warbird shows up and we can simply beam the lot of them to their storage holds.
i didn't mean to imply the ipad was a ferrari. Or i should say: i didn't mean to imply that the ipad was a performance machine. my analogy was simply to use a car that had a narrow set of use cases.
As you point out, luxury sedans have big trunks, and a benz can tow stuff. You aren't saying, "but ferraris make great boat hauling cars as well.".
laptops may be the luxury sedans of the computer world. portability, sporty, and USB ports! You can get a benz and have performance and speed, haul 3 friends and their golf clubs. if you expect that from a ferrari, i think the dealer will just laugh at you. clearly it's not the car you want.
From what i hear ferraris are singular in purpose. In that sense, i think they are probably an accurate stand in for an ipad.
that goes without saying. everyone loves hypnotoad.
an ipod touch is about the same price as a DSi. Plus the games are cheaper and easier to get. I would consider getting my kids ipods.

That explains how i get hit with fish while hang-gliding.

You don't have to pay apple to jailbreak your iPhone either.
wait! This implies that not everybody wants the same kind of game! boggle!

So you want to vote for a representative who may be entirely unpredictable? Why even bother with the pretense of elections at all?
I think most people expect their guy is going to hold steadfast to their views.
Just like most open source projects!
::ducks::
Its that he was doing personal activities while 'on the job'
Most of us here are guilty of the same thing. Except, of course, for the people who's job is posting to slashdot.
The wet dog tips the balance to porn.

like the Apple Newton. If palm finds a way to survive, they could come back. People learn more from failure than success.
Oh yeah! the pre, the phone with no apps, but great multitasking. it's like greek tragedy.
OMG! That's the nirvana of multitasking that i've been robbed of with my iPhone?

the con targets iPad users. the software targets windows.
