What does this code do? Does it fulfill a core business requirement? Does it give your product an enourmous competitive egde? or is it simply an implementation of a well known data structure. or an initialization sequence for something like creating a GraphicsDevice under DirectX.

The former situations sound more serious than the later. Not many people feel there is alot of value in code that initializes a video card. You could easily spend 200 lines getting to the point to just draw something, but the structure of that initialization is largely determined by the people who made the api. How do you even know that the code wasn't copied from some book, then posted to the forums with some extra comments added?

I haven't watched a movie off physical media in at least 2 years. No, i'm not pirating them, though that is an option. Time Warner, Uverse, i think fios all have movies on demand. Sure it's not high def now, but it will be. I find it much easier and more convenient than dealing with buying, netflixing, pirating, whatever.

My dvd player has 3mm of dust on it. I have no intention of getting either an hd/dvd or a blueray player. By the time a clear victor is declared, no one will care. We will all be streaming high def content on demand.

  4. Media Company, look at this on Indictment Highlights File-Sharing Risks · · Score: 1

This is exactly the angle the media companys should leverage. Instead of combating what they perceive as piracy with more complicated and restrictive drm, they should work on the simple solution of providing the best source for their product.

If the price / convenience / value ratios make you the best source for your product, people will scramble to get it from you. For money even! Back it up with an ad campaign reinforcing how safe and accessible you are and i guarantee you won't lose.

I wish i was a media company, i would be at profit already.

What skill? Clicking buttons? Memorizing key sequences? I fail to see the skill. If you consider that a skill why isn't configuring bot settings a skill. That involves clicking buttons and memorizing key sequences.

Just because you don't value the skill doesn't mean it's not a skill. No one values mimes, but they still have a skill.

Myself, i do think configuring a bot is clearly a skill. I'd like to see a mainstream MMOG that requires bots and provides no way to directly control your character. Of course, someone would write a script that allowed key sequences to command your bot and everyone would accuse them of cheating.

I'm sure that's what the developers of the annimated cursors were thinking too.

I used to have the same mindset. It's easy to be complacent. It's easy to assume if someone enters bad data and your program crashes that anything happening after that point is the fault of the underlying system.

However, we have tools to prevent the crash. Provided you are developing in some higher level language, all you have to do is catch an exception and shut down the app. The UX people can bitch at me about the bad experience and whatnot, and I can argue with them about what kind of idiot it takes to cause the program to exit in that way, but at least it's safe.

Really? what is grandma doing that the default install and automatic updates of Ubuntu are not sufficient for her?

She hates postfix and called you because she's having a bitch of a time installing Qmail? She can't quite get Wow running under wine?

I have a dapper install at home and aside from xorg.conf or smb.conf, i find the built in GUI tool fine for everything. If your grandma is calling you for scripts to help her access windows shares on other machines, Linux just might be for her. Otherwise, Office, email, web browsing, it's all right there and easily configured through GUI menus
