As a person diagnosed with bi-polar (manic-depressive) and schizo-affective (a psycho) disorder since my late teens I feel well qualified to dispel a few of the rumors some people have about these DISEASES. This, in combination with quite a bit of the "crazy" genes I inherited from mom put me on a path which on one hand I wouldn't trade for a million dollars but by the same I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Such is the nature of this beast. I'm 53 years old now. An old hippie who hasn't worked in 12 years and has no friends other than my wife of 30 years (my best friend). I disdain crowds and people in general. I've had enough adventures to last a lifetime and now that I have had these diseases mostly under control for the last 8 years or so I am enjoying my life more than ever. Depression is a hole in the ground. A black hole from which no light escapes nor does ones soul. To stand at the precipice prior to the fall is perhaps the most frightening thing which I've often experienced in my life. Knowing that it will be perhaps weeks, months, or years to return to the real living world yet having no choice but to be in this perilous position is what depression is all about. Not a matter of laughing or crying by forcing it. Not a matter of ignoring your "problems" and getting back on track. It's a fucking disease. So too is the opposite - the mania which comes seemingly from no source. Suddenly I am awake, alive, taking risks, being rapturously crazy and loving it. I may stay up for 5 days. I used to drink and drug during these periods. Getting caught once too often finally saved my life. You think depressed people have a pension for suicide? Try being truly manic. You are a GOD and just like when you were 17 - nothing can hurt you. Total irresponsibility, career crashing behavior (like I said- I haven't worked in 12 years), marriage ruining, child hurting (emotionally) parenting. Selfish in the extreme. And as quickly as the high starts you crash. Overtired, normally on the edge of physical exhaustion. And if you are damn lucky you don't crash directly into a depression. I thank God for small and large favors. I have done things I am extremely proud of as well as things I am ashamed of knowing I ever did. I have done things that I dare never tell anyone about for fear of the consequences.
I have spent the last 10 years sober, and drug-free with the exception of prescribed medication. It has taken almost 20 years to find a combination of medicines which keep me on somewhat of an even keel. The problem is that a given stasis never lasts for more than two or three years. It's as if I build up a tolerance and my psychiatrist and I experiment again ever so gently with another drug or two.
At my worst I was locked up in a mental institution receiving ECT (electro convulsive therapy) treatments over a period of a several long weeks. These were used to bring me out of the deepest depressions I ever fell in. Did they work? For me - yes. However the price has been a signifigant hit to mostly my short term memory. Many years have passed yet this memory problem exists due to the treatments in combination with the diseases as well as the side effects of some of my meds.
If you think I am the only one around with these kind of real, identified, causal as well as genetically based problems then guess again. If you think I was trying to write a feel sorry for me novella with these words then please cut me a break. I don't want or need anyones pity. I am merely trying to decribe what this 40+ year trip has been so that maybe a few of you can see it for what it really is. Nobody asks for this. I know a few who fake it for sympathy but those seem to be the people who always get better in the end and get a masters in psych to make some money. Well good for them. For me the mere fact that I'm still alive and I have many,many more good days than bad days at this point is a gift I cherish.

I recently had occasion to review much more info than I wanted to primarily on the Chernobyl accident. Billions of words but most of them nothing more than a report on another report, etc... A lot of bullshit. One Russian report claims something on the order of 10K dead in a 40 year time spread after the accident while another report by a group in the United Kingdom claims a mere 54 (yes 54) total deaths due to the explosion over a 40 year basis. A Russian reports claims 43K persons lived in the closest city at the time of the explosion. Another Russian report claims 150K persons. Russians reported using over 500,000 persons to clean up Chernobyl and build the sarcophogus which entombs it now. These people were lied to, taken advantage of, and often times made 5 or 10 trips inside highly radioactive areas to do anything ranging from damage assessment to cleanup. The Russians promised to follow up on all those who participated. At this point there are thousands in hospitals with various fallout caused diseases. Many of the sick were exposed directly to molton core material.

Having spent 20 years in the prog business I always look back to the days of Turbo Basic, Pascal, Assembler, and Prolog on my trusty Compaq suitcase as the good old days of programming. Armed with a copy of a few different Peter Norton books as well as a Comp Sci degree in pc's made my job something to look forward to getting to everyday. Today, ????? Well, I'm 53 and retired. The newer client-server models and the amount of abstraction in every modern language just serve to confuse and frustrate. It's just no fun anymore is it?

I'm afraid you are not in the minority my friend. Having just installed Vista last week, DRM concerns's are on the front burner for me. Yesterday a friend of a friend needed a self-recorded VHS tape of the Katrina hurricane's aftermath on his own neighborhood copied to a DVD. I connected his VHS player directly to the cable in of my "Vista approved" Hauppauge video I/O board and easily sucked the picture in via Windows Media Center as if it were a standard TV program (mpeg4). Guess what? I wasn't the owner of the recorded image! Vista DRM'd it as it's own and refused to let me modify it!! Well after breaking out my wink-wink, nudge-nudge, "file conversion program" I was able to get it into a format I could work with -- this was with a one hour tape and even on my AMD dual-core it still took a considerable amount of time to convert between various formats until the video was clean enough and Nero was happy to burn it to a DVD. No doubt that no matter what I plan on doing in the future concerning video files, I will not be naive enough to believe that an XP Media Center type of operation is going to work the same under Vista Media Center. If I have to do something that Microsoft might consider "illegal (??)" to change one of MY video files to a proper format to be burnt to a DVD then I think it's time to seriously consider jumping ship. What should have been perhaps a 3 hour background task turned into an embarassing 8 hour session of mostly experimentation until I got it right. Screw that !
