Which is one reason why the Government constantly redefine what is "unemployed" So that they can keep the official unemployment figures low.... "Yes our unemployment is maintained at about 6%...." In Australia, unemployment figures were once based on people actually registered as unemployed Now you have to be registered as unemployed (with up to 6 weeks before your registration becomes official)and must not have done ANY work or training course in the previous fortnight, not even one hour. If you are registered as unemployed for more than 6 weeks (it may be 10, i can't remember exactly at the moment) you must partake in a training course (like how to write a resume), or in voluntary community service (work for the dole), and bingo, you are not part of the statistics anymore. And while you are registered as unemployed you must apply (and provide documentary evidence of interviews) for a certain number of jobs every week, or your registration is suspended (for up to 6 weeks) and of course you are off the stats again. And finally while you are registered as unemployed, the dole payment is insufficient to actually survive on without additional income, let alone chase work, but if you do anything like sell off assets or get a part time job, you are removed from the stats(for up to 6 weeks)

"What people here neglect to mention is that for a lot of things, like bolts or screws and a million other things, there really aren't good conversions available at all."
What most Americans arguing against metric neglect to mention is that there is already a metric system for bolts, screws, and a million other things, working perfectly, you don't need to convert things that are working, just start new with metric equivalent as you start to build new gear.
A Gearbox is built with SAE Bolts ?, keep building it. When you come to build the next generation of gearbox with a fresh design and fresh castings , 'Upgrade' to metric measurements and bolts etc....Its not rocket surgery. This means you have a transition period of 10m to 15 years and before you know it you are all converted. It should not be that hard, America has outsourced most of its manufacturing to asia (who are already metric to cope with the outsourced manufacturing from europe and Australia), so there really isn't that much to convert within the country.
Every Japanese/korean/european car coming into your country is built using the (standard for the rest of the world) metric bolts, nuts etc. yes you can use a 1/2 inch spanner on that bolt, the rest of the worlds uses a 13mm spanner. 9/16 ? 14 mm In Australia I use metric tools as standard choice for most thing only reaching for one of the 2 or 3 different Imperial sets for older equipment (or some things built in or specifically for the USA)
And while I think about it, can someone explain to me why an american mile is different to a mile anywhere else in the world ?
Apparently warner brothers sued the marx brothers over something related to the movie "A night at the opera" (I can't remember the details here and I am happy to be corrected). The Marx Brothers countersued Warner Brothers over the use of the word 'Brothers' In their name, as it seems there weren't really any brothers with the name Warner running the business.......

Funny, I haven't heard of that many deaths from solar power.........
I know as an advocate for nuclear power you will immediately come up with the "baseline power" argument. I am always amused by this argument. "Solar cannot supply enough power for the baseline power demand so we must build more nuclear power plants to give us the reserve power for when demand spikes." is the argument. And yes, it is perfectly True
But, when does demand spike ? When do demand induced brown outs and blackouts occur ?
Hot, sunny days...........
Imagine if our captains of industry suddenly started to put PV arrays on top of all their factories. Over a few short years they would recover the costs of installation in reduced power bills, and of course the additional advantage of being able to sell the power back in to the grid on times when the factory was shut down (you know, times like weekends and public holidays) even if this was sold at 50% or 60% of the cost of buying power, it is still 'money for nothing',
And the more factories covering their roofs in PV panels, the greater the demand, the greater production, and the more the costs will come down.
And finally there is also the advantage that is so often overlooked, PV's on the roof intercept solar energy directly preventing it striking that part of the roof, slowing down the heating of the roof, and thus delaying the need (and assisting in the operation of) air conditioning........
I am not saying solar energy is the only answer to all our power needs, I am suggesting that it is part of a much larger picture that we need to look at.
But there are a hell of a lot of roofs out there going to waste.
"Better for the user or for the company that issues their paycheck? If a user has a better method or device/software to get a job done its zero problem to allow it"
like the company that i worked for recently, who have a policy that all computers must go to sleep if they are not used for 5 minutes (the company in question has a 'green' policy), no exceptions.
so the guys who regularly have to do presentations, switching power point presentations and videos across several laptops rate continually re- enrtering unlock passwords (wonderful random strings generated by their IT department) or 'twiddling' the track pad's on their laptops to prevent them going to sleep. but this is distracting when there is a speaker on stage showing a video that runs for 6 minutes, and the laptop goes to sleep because there was no input for 5 minutes.
But this is policy, for all company laptops, no exceptions, and the management of the company say "IT tell us they cannot make an exception for 1 or 2 computers so you just have to work with it..........."
The age is generally considered to be unfriendly by whichever party is in power although the general perception is that they tip the scales a little towards the ALP (Labour Party)
However, the Liberal (read Conservative) Party is in power in the state of Victoria, so even by your logic, even though they are 'Friendly' to the Federal Government, They are considered 'unfriendly' to the state government.

Yes the Australian carriers, can disable phone, however, the phone i had stolen, and the 2 that have been stolen from my son, well we were told that although they can disable the phone , they normally don't and probably won't. All they normally do is disable the SIM. Yes they have had the technology to do this for 10 years, no in real terms they do not do it.
This is the same company that is charging an extra AU$80:00 toAU$120 per iPad just because the boat turns right and comes here to Australia rather than turning left and going to the USA.
problem is, we are talking governments here. if 10 years of government eavesdropping and data matching does not produce any credible result in an anti terror area, any other department that can will have its fingers in the data somewhere. and of course Government departments are not justified by results, Government departments are justified by budgets, so if it is spending all of its budget, then it is working . If at that point it is not achieving results this is only because either it does not have a big enough budget or it is not gathering enough data... Once a government department or division is started it is incredibly hard to stop, too many people get caught up in work and they will fight to maintain their jobs irrelevant of how immoral or useless their positions are.
Is that the filing cabinet in the locked toilet in the basement ?

you should all know by now that not only does voting encourage them, the only result of voting is that a politician will get in to office.......
I am sorry but this is the real world.
Public policy is made by politicians who would not know rational if it smacked them in the face.
Making Money from exploiting workers is the backbone of our capitalist system.
Why does this remind me of William S Burroughs comment (From "words of advice for young children").

In Phoenix proper, there's 8 "streets" to a mile (e.g. 40th to 48th), which is why most of the major North-South street numbers are multiples of 8.
how convenient
1 mile = 1.6 Km so the streets are 200 metres apart
this makes it easier , now you can make all your new street numbers in full base 10 instead of base 8
5 streets are a Kilometre

As far as I am aware they have shipped quite a few units of both the current smart book model and the earlier touch book series.
You could try the Smart Book from Always Innovating
www.alwaysinnovating.com
This is the tablet/netbook convertible that seems to have been the inspiration for the Asus Transformer
Comes preloaded with AIOS (their own customised flavour of linux), Android, Ubuntu, and ChromiumOS
I'm hoping to have one soon myself to try.
I'm skeptical of ANY driver's ability to use one of these without turning his car into a 3,000-lb angry bird.
Fixed it for you
