and many of these "frequent travelers" (myself included) need more than a simple email and browse computer and have purchased fully functional 13" size laptops that weigh about 3 pounds and have plenty of processing power. Myself, I personally went with a Dell m1330 and DID go with the SSD drive as well (and a true SSD drive, not merely some flash memory i might add). I also have an eee that i use for the munchkins and have no problems with it, and have even carried it around with me "on the town" a few times when i just wanted to be able to do some simple browsing or email while waiting for the misses to finish her shopping.
however, dont think it could replace the need for a full featured computer when professionals travel around.
Those of us who consider windows to be non-professional grade software find that to be a major bonus. and those of us with brains find this to be the most unintelligent comment every uttered on/.
so we're supposed to be sorry for someone who apparently went around the normal methods of getting SP1, since it is unavailable for 32bit OS's as a standalone installer (only truly available as an entire OEM install disc WITH SP1), didn't test it out fully with the needed software for the company, and had problems?
and I bought my m1330 WITH SSD, T7500, 3GB RAM, DVDRW, ETHERNET PORT, HDMI port, Camera, LED screen, and everything else for less than $2200 SHIPPED to my door.
The summary and the truth are far from the same....
He's not out because he's "too fast"
He's out because his specific prosthetic lower legs and feet have less wind resistance than normal legs, return WAY more energy per stride than normal legs, and offer him what amounts to a competitive advantage over other runners.
If he wants to compete, he's free to do so, just not with those specific prosthesis.
He can submit others to the Committee for acceptance all day long.
This is no different than the way the olympic committee judges the use of certain swimsuits, softball bats, or any other equipment in use during the Olympics.
Yet i have the five at a time unlimited plan, and routinely send back FIVE DVD's the EXACT same day i receive them, and get my next set of five two days later......
So lets do the math.
receive on monday +5 receive on wednesday +5 receive on friday +5
hmmmm
thats 15 movies a week base on 4 weeks every month and i get 60 movies a month for $30.00
hmmmmmm plus, i got to watch heroes season 2 (streaming)the day after they aired on network tv.
and I do this just about every week.....
and have been doing this for a few years now......
I have a 64GB SSD Drive in my Dell M1330 Laptop. I too use an external as storage for files. The differences, side-by-side, to one without it, simply for OS Startup, are easily 3 to 1 in speed.
I was lucky enough to basically get the drive for free due to the EPP program coupons and discounts and other discounts.. otherwise i would never have gotten it.
But I'm sure glad i did.
I've also noticed a slight increase in battery life, although this could be simply a small difference in batteries themselves.
So Microsoft should be responsible for all the updates for every POS crapware and trialware and Bonzi Buddy program out there? And they should provide this to free to every person who wants to include their updates in the program? And none of these "altruistic programmers" would EVER try to sneak their potential spyware updates into the program at all would they. And no one would blame Microsoft if they did provide this and somehow, someone installed spyware on every machine that used to program.
if you have flash or java installed on Linux or Mac OSX you will also fall into this category. The security vulnerabilities of a particular program do not always link to the specific operating system used.
There have been many instances of security vulnerabilities in Java, Flash, Firefox, etc which are non-OS specific, so please do not try to make this seem a "Windoze" only problem.
I myself have at least three linux machines which are probably "out-of-date" for at least one item. The real question is, is that item being used by the system and is it accessible to the outside world? Not is it, by itself, a "security problem".
That's why I have a $2000 Dell XPS m1330 sitting next to me with a 64GB SSD drive in it. It was SOOOOOOO expensive that I couldn't afford to buy one.
Oh wait.
And if you haven't used a computer with an SSD drive in it, maybe, just maybe, you should do the intelligent thing ans SHUT YOUR PIE-HOLE unless you have actual experience and can comment intelligently. Typical/. morons spouting fetid drivel from their warped little brains.
1. They buy from SOHO because they have some sort of "deal" or "coupon" they found on a deal website or ebay.
2. You can still, as of last week, order a DELL Vostro Small Business Computer with Windows XP preloaded on it. I have five of them sitting here.
3. It's not really about accuracy on slashdot, it's about bitching and whining because the "rest of the world" hasn't seen the light and moved away from "M$" and their partners to the "wonderful world of Linux" which of course is completely perfect for every bit of hardware and software out there currently.
actually a geothermal heat pump (or several). properly sized of course, could help efficiency a large amount.
However, you better have a helluva big field to do drops in, or a good cold river flowing by to transfer from....
If we learned anything from the recent cycles of elections, it's that people are inherently LESS trustworthy than machines are.
After all, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist (or even a dim witted 3rd grader) to remember all of the "vote wrangling" that went on when various "human" counting systems were employed in Florida, Ohio, Iowa, etc over the last few general elections.
Because of course, a HUMAN would NEVER have any agenda at all when it comes to vote counting......
Oh wait........
Hanging Chad's anyone?
And note, this applies to BOTH sides equally, so if you desire to blame the "mean ole conservatives" or the "damn looney liberals",.....Don't.
not too mention that it was those same "right wing" people in the USA that wanted the country to enter the wars instead of sticking their heads in the sand and saying "NOT OUR PROBLEM!!!!"
Maybe someone SHOULD remember Veterans Day and the rest of the history they have apparently forgotten.....
Or I guess they can do the "popular" thing and just stay stupid.
I fail to see a large number of MAJOR movie productions which were edited on Final Cut
On Avid the other hand, the number is actually quite high, even for student films
It's the same there as it is in the regular business world
Use similar tools to what you will be using in your future profession. Which is why a large number of film school students either use "old style" avid machines for fil, or the newer Avid programs for digital "film".
There's a reason you can buy premade Avid computers from places like B&H Photo. Cause people want them.
Actually, Vista prompts for any action which could pen an attack vector, somewhat similarly to a *nix based system.
UAC will prompt when attempting open any install file, any window where system files can be accessed and/or changes. and any interface that allows a user to modify their system (ie Device manager).
It also prompts any time a file tries to run outside of userspace.
to me, this appears to be sound reasoning, but then again, i've never had a virus because im not stupid either.
How about because even if i go out and purchase the EXACT same hardware, it's still 1/2 the price of buying the equivalent Mac.
Which is in reality, not all that much different than building a top end PC.
Dell charges up to $500 for a 750Gb SATA HDD, which I can, and have, purchased for sub $200 for several months now.
So in the PC market, people build there own to save money.
Which is why PC sales are much stronger than MAC sales will ever be under the current sales model.
I don't need some fancy looking case that I'm going to shove under a desk, nor do i need a hugely overpriced LCD display from Apple.
Throw in that some people in the computer world actually want to test out apps they have written on Mac's to ensure that they *gasp* work correctly before releasing them to the wild, and they do so in the virtualization environment without needing to pay thousands of dollars to do so.
and many of these "frequent travelers" (myself included) need more than a simple email and browse computer and have purchased fully functional 13" size laptops that weigh about 3 pounds and have plenty of processing power.

or stupid....
either appears to be supported.....
They weren't.
Obviously.
"this one time, my cousin told me, at band camp....."
Ahh how I love these passed down "stories".
or close anyway......

not likely.
sorry to reply to myself, but i wanted to note this is for an OEM distribution of Vista Business x64 purchased from newegg and installed on a Dell.
so I do not believe it's tied to anything specific.
It also is tagged as having been available since yesterday.
actually, SP1 (120.0MB - 711.6MB) just appeared on my Vista Automatic Update about three minutes ago.
So i don't believe it's just for technet subscribers (although I am one).
and I bought my m1330 WITH SSD, T7500, 3GB RAM, DVDRW, ETHERNET PORT, HDMI port, Camera, LED screen, and everything else for less than $2200 SHIPPED to my door.
And so did several of my friends.
God love EPP deals.

Can we adopt that rule for Congress too?
And all other forms of "public service" entities?
I for one would LOVE to see that happen and a major country like say, France, forget to vote in something.....
