The same reason every new MMO is labeled a WoW-killer. Anything new is going to be branded as better than its competitors, the problem comes when there's a competitor that's so much bigger than everyone else in the market, where you'd have to kill it to actually beat it. You can't exactly market as being worse than your competitor.
I've seen a couple of good CAPTCHAs that ask a simple math problem, or a traditional CAPTCHA, but then say 'leave this field blank' on the actual entry field. A bot sees the field and has a crack at solving the thing, whereas a human can ignore it and carry on.
Would make extracting the image and getting someone to answer it worthless as well, as a bot with those inputs would still answer something in the field regardless.
And, as a side note, the "RIAA" is essentially a group of lawyers. There's no issue about where the power lies because they were created to lobby and to sue.
Duly noted, but isn't the payment judgement against capitol, as that's who's listed in the court documents?
Surely it would be better for the RIAA to just pay up and stop all the publicity about the case. Of course, that probably wouldn't be the best for its lawyers, which suggests where the real balance of power lies.
I don't think this applies when you're in the business of producing operating systems: an OS that doesn't need upgrades means you don't sell any more software.
But how much more fuel does the average American use in the less efficient cars that are available? These environmental grounds seem to be a bit lacking over there.
If you define "self-inflicted" as "forced upon us by the government", then yes, yes it is. The US has had far cheaper fuel than here since forever.
On the other hand, I expect our cars are a lot more efficient, as we don't want to waste the fuel we're spending so much on, especially compared to the US. Give the world our cars and your fuel and the environmental lobby would love it.

I think its more:
don't update -> evil
do update but break the OS at the same time -> evil
if it updated without any problems, I'm sure people wouldn't have any issues with it. Well, less issues anyway.
Being of university age, we really do have a binge drinking problem, at least in the 20-somethings. Well, mid teens to late twenties anyway.
I thought the DMCA was intended to apply in as many situations as possible to allow companies to sue people?
I suspect the subset of the populace you have dealings with may be different from the Average Joe on the street though :P

Yes, but since when have the RIAA accepted standard practices when scare-mongering and delaying has worked?
keep digging?

I'm aware some distros come at a cost, but I'd say the large majority of them don't.
Also, see sibling post.
Erm... free?
Where's the -1, Funny button?
Unfortunately, fools tend to be quite ingenious in very limited fields; mostly the fields involving screwing things up.
It worked for Dr. Who
Hot crap, my bad. I thought it seemed a bit low.
About $0.50
Yeah, but at least they thought of the children. God forbid they saw a model of a naked woman!
If it wasn't, what would they sell? The comment works both ways I guess
Yes, and we also use litres now. I converted it already based on what I paid the night before.

Y'see, in the UK we pay approximately $6.40 a gallon of petrol. I don't think you have that much of a right to complain.
