Absolutely agree. I've taken telecourses and didn't learn a thing. Cram for each test and forget it the next day. I would only take such a class if I already knew most of the material and only needed the credit. If I were hiring someone, I would classify the distance learner as self taught. With some subjects like languages or math, studying 15 minutes a day is better than several hours once a week.

Geezer bands don't because they know their fans already have the CDs so promotion doesn't gain them any sales.

I had Sirius for a year and wasn't thrilled. The few stations I liked, repeated songs too often. Their version of 70's hits was virtually all disco, 60's hits were mostly folk and the "punk" station never played anything I liked. All Elvis, all the time got old real quick and they even wasted two channels on some guy named Howard. Blues and classical were alright. Comedy channels were a cute novelty on ocassion. The news shows were pretty standard fair. Perhaps I wasn't so impressed because we have good stations here in Detroit. I can keep up with music on 89X while I get the news on WJR and NPR. I have 6 CDs loaded with MP3s, if that's not enough. I was gonna resubscribe for $50 for 6 months then they raised the price so I lost interest. Nothing against it and I'm glad other people enjoy it. Part of my lack of interest may be because I like to "think" that my DJ has a hand in choosing the music he or she plays and the whole national programming thing completely destroyed the illusion.

  10. I work at a newspaper on Newspapers Are Dying, Blog At 11 · · Score: 1

We all know the industry is shrinking. But...

I agree that national and international news is a problem area for newspapers. Most of it comes from news pools like AP or Reuters and you'll find the same stories and pictures on BBC, CNN or Al-Jazeera that your local paper is printing. Logistics means that TV and internet news sources can get the story to the public faster. However, in depth coverage is still the realm of the newspaper. TV news is limited to 30 second clips and the internet stories are usually very short.

Recently, The Detroit Free Press broke a local story about misconduct by the mayor of Detroit. Without a local news outlet, this story would have never seen the light of day. I'm sure a few bloggers would have printed rumors but nothing would have come of it. The prosecutor just filed 11 felony charges against the mayor as a result of the news article.

And we rule on sports coverage. Personally, I am more interested in the latest Warcraft patch then I am about sports but the people who care about such things tell me that our sports coverage is great.

The Franks(France is named for them) who ruled Europe for most of the dark ages (around 500AD-1000AD) were largely iliterate. This is why they were dark. Charlemagne (around 800AD) is famous for his respect for education. Previously, educated men were only to be found in the priesthood. One gets the impression that a literate male would be often teased and taunted, because a true warrior wouldn't waste his time on such trivia. Women had no rights under the Franks.

I think everyone could tell a story or two of the Catholic Church supressing information. Remember Galileo?

Educated people respect education. The people in power want to hold onto power. When those conflict, the truth is often the loser.

My old E-machine plays WoW just fine with only 768mb of mem. My main system only has 2 gig and it's good for video editing. I am running XP on both but my next machine will be something else, I think.

Simply put, Vista has nothing in it that appeals to me. I have no particular loyalty or hatred for any OS. MS keeps making Windows less useful and more of a resource hog. Linux has matured enough that the drivers are not so hard to find, the office tools work well and there are plenty of games. I hear WoW plays well under Wine so I don't NEED MS anymore. I may use their software anyway if I WANT it, but they'll have to sell me on that one first. So far, Vista hasn't caught my eye but my nephew's I-Phone made me drool a bit. I don't think MS understands how to impress end users anymore. It's just a tired old OS by a tired old company. The only reason the whole world hasn't set a gravestone over the MS market dominance is that no one else is ready to take over right now. Apple hardware is too expensive and Linux doesn't have marketing.

There are several companies like this who have stopped responding to what their customer's want and are instead trying to make the customers buy what they want to sell. It will be interesting to see how well it works for them in the long run but I have my doubts. MS software is not oil or electricity, I can live just fine without it.
