Until the American public actually demands a solution and holds all of the pols accountable, the only thing that will happen is projects like this go deeper. Which probably means the projects become even more radical and intrusive because there will be no check or balance against them.
Not at the slashdot post but what Ballmer said and executive did. Customers (other than programmers) don't care of the code bases are the same for windows phone, surface and xbox. They don't care if the hardware side has synergies either. They care about cost and functionality.
This was not about customers as much as trying to alleviate pressure from money managers, fund managers and big investment houses.
The problem is a problem of perception not a problem of technology. In general society is looking for that silver bullet that just magically solves all our energy problems and environmental concerns into one neat little package. Until society is willing to accept a solution that includes a mix of energy solutions, we'll never be happy. This applies to transportation as well.
Everyone should read it. At least the commentary about how information can be misused to stir up the masses and move society in one direction or another.
[Begin Rant]Unfortunately, that's were "we" have gone with terrorism. It isn't enough to call someone a terrorist. No they used "weapons of mass destruction" because it sounds more terrifying. It isn't enough to call a robber a robber any more either. No, we've starting calling them terrorist now. Anything to arouse the masses and get them worked up.
It feels like the same thing is going on with the latest flu or viral "epidemics". The latest economic news. It doesn't end.[End Rant]
Google blew it with google TV imo. It wasn't usable at all, unless you already had cable or directTV and paid for all of the extra services. I realize a game console is very different in that respect. I'm saying I didn't think google put enough effort into making google TV useful. And I'm concerned they will go the same route with a gaming console....
Ouya has been a disappointment, not in the idea, just not enough support for it to be worth it.
Big corporations are in business for one purpose only: for the shareholders. There are good things that come from it, like our 401K and health insurance funding. However, 401K holders are little people and, come end of the day, have no voice in the decision making of a companies direction. Bean counters spreadsheets prevail at the cost of doing what is right or morally sound. It is really sad too that peoples lives are nothing more than line items on a spreadsheet.
This is rant (you've been warned) I'm so frustrated with 4G. I get charged $10 more a month, and it rarely works well, if at all. I live, literally, in the middle of a major city (1M+ citizens).
No joke, if I'm facing south while sitting on the left side of my couch, I have 4G, if I turn east, I do not. The worst part is most of the apps that are running get into a mucked state if its in the middle of doing something when the phone context switches between 3G and 4G. Text messages wont send (fail, not stay in a queue) while its switching. Many times I have to reboot the phone to fix the app problems (killing them in the task manager doesn't work all the time).
I want the carries and cell mfg to fix 4G and give me something that works, reliably
Agreed. And not just the administration. Congress is too. During election season congress runs around blabbing they are for the people and as soon as session starts, its back to voting for the people that put campaign $ in their pockets. No matter what party, follow the money $.
I have an android tablet, not a ipad. I feel my experience is similar. Yes I can create documents. However, it is difficult enough that usually end up shutting off my tablet and get out the laptop (yeah yeah I have old hardware).
The software to create and edit documents on the tablet just isn't mature enough to do the things I am used to. Web based editors act weird. Apps miss a feature I want or whatever.
So, from that perspective, I think Bill is more right than wrong.
Those are good questions. I wouldn't necessarily make it obvious it was run out of my house. IF they asked, I would be honest. the 24x7 "thing" could be challenge. So I got to thinking, what if these businesses are definitely 8 to 5 shops. Idk, it seems like there could be some market for small time hosting. I could be wrong. I couldn't sell water to a man in a desert; so what do I know anyways?:)
There is a shortage of cheap IT workers who will work in sweat shop conditions and not ask for benefits and not get upset at working insane hours.
I am so frustrated of hearing about how there is this (non-existent) shortage of workers too. It's total bull.
I've posted this before: it's amazing how often I hear at an interview "you have great experience", "you have exactly what we are looking for"....blah only to get an offer of less $ than I'm currently earning. IF there really is a shortage, and I am really "great" and "exactly" then they should be at least offering what I'm currently earning.
Being on the hiring side, it is hard to find workers, not because they don't exist. They don't want to change jobs. And why don't they want to change? I'm guessing the same reason I stated above. Employers are being cheap ass and refusing to pay skilled workers what they are worth. So no one wants to leave, risk taking less money, risk being at the bottom of the totem pole.
This "shortage" is nothing more than an excuse to import more labor than hire local already existing labor. The CEOs and bean counters are manufacturing a shortage to justify their own means
I've wondered how feasible it would be for me to purchase a few good servers, upgrade my home internet to business class, and provide some hosting services as a on the side, part time business. On the surface, it doesn't seem like a tremendous amount of effort or investment, other than to get a customer base installed.
I'm not hopeful. I remember having conversations in the late 90s about this. Most people were like "what do I have to hide" "Doesn't affect me" "Im not doing anything wrong"....as long as they get their paychecks and timely news of which celeb isn't wearing panties, they aren't concerned.
Maybe the FBI should just require we record every form of communication 24/7.
If I remember correctly from the book 1984, home TVs were used to monitor behavior. And if they were turned off for too long, it immediately flag you as suspicious. I think its time to just implement this.
If you can't see my rabid sarcasm in this post, you probably wouldn't object to my proposals anyways.
Pretty soon withdrawing more than $50 from an ATM will be a precrime.
It already can be. The "know your customer" legislation (I believe passed originally in the Clinton era and enhanced in the Bush era after 9/11), require banks to monitor your transactions for abnormalities. Thus, if you make weekly deposits on Fri for $100, that wed deposit for $150 gets flagged. That doesn't mean it's immediately considered criminal activity. But banks are watching you for when you break the law.

This is exactly what I said in a post to this same article.

These are all just my opinions obviously
well said :)

We definitely need links to see this :)
I was hoping for link to an article that explained this in more detail.....
I'm slightly relieved that I'm not the only one. I feel like an idiot when I try telling this to the carrier representatives.

Let legislators spend most of the time debating if a law should be renewed not making more laws on top of existing laws
mod this up.

I sure hope this purely rumor and not a bit of truth to it. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if there's more truth to it than rumor.
amen bro
