Did you read the overview in the link? If an EXT3 fs has been cleanly unmounted (or fscked) it can even be remounted as EXT2 again.

And yes, I know TUX2 isn't a journaling fs strictly speaking but it does help illustrate my point that a fs does not have to totally rewritten to add that kind of functionallity.

In fact, I believe the first story involving beanstalks involve an attack on one - the companion "science fact" article explained their physics. I'm sure I'll remember the name of the author just after I hit submit - probably either Benford or Sheffeld.

If you were thinking of Charles Sheffield's The Web Between Worlds, the story considered the possibilty of a terrorist attack but it didn't actually happen.

BTW I think A.C. Clarke had a space elevator story out just a few months (weeks?) before Sheffield's novel was released.

Did you read the article? The people being given "unsigning bonuses" never worked at Intel. They are people who were recruited, signed an employment contract, were given signing bonuses, and haven't yet started working. The unsigning bonus is for them to forget about the employment contract because Intel overestimated their growth and recruited more people than they needed. It doesn't say anything about current employees leaving.

Ideas need to be accountable. In other words, they have to hold water and be based on evidence. If they are not, they should be squashed. That is what the tradition of rationalism in the West, starting in Edinburgh in the 1760's, is all about. May it long continue, and may the dark ideas be vanquished for the greater good.

Every one of us should have the freedom to analyze ideas for ourselves to determine their validity. Furthermore I think it's important to have a variety of ideas to provide a counterpoint from which to refine the good ones, identify the flaws in the bad ones, and encourage people to consider alternate viewpoints in the quest for truth.

In my view I deem your idea bad.

The flaw in your reasoning it your assumption that open source software has to be developed differently from any other software. While this is certainly possible it is not a requirment. It is possible to develop software conventionally with thorough QC and release the source to the public. You can still accept or refuse patches from the public as you see fit.

FWIW, for the past 8 months I've done almost all my reading on my Handspring Visor and I have to say that for me, it beats the hell out of paper books. The screen simply hasn't been an issue and I love the convenience of:

    1. Being able to finish one book at 3 a.m., go to Baen.com or Fictionwise, and immediatley get something new to read.

    2. Not having to hold a book open and continuously turn pages.

    3. Being able to read in the dark with a backlit display.

    4. Not using up any more of my (already packed) shelf space.
