"The problem is that no big company controls it, and Microsoft, asleep at the wheel, let it slip too long to do much about it"
I would think Microsoft would be more interested/against bittorrent simply because of the amount of their pirated software people trade on it, not because they cant control it, if they were really interested in file trading, they would have bought one of the big name (non open source) companies all ready doing it.
I orderd some smokes off the internet (3 cartons of smokes I couldnt find anywhere in florida). I had them delivered to the address I was at, but was not a citizen of florida. basically I was there for a few months working for a company.
The place I ordered from was in Texas.
About 2 days ago I got a letter in the mail from the state of florida saying I owe $10.50 on tax for the cigs.
I still cant figure out why I would have to pay florida tax on these, but just like every other good hearted american, Ill just pay the fee so I can forget about it instead of fighting it.
Why would it be a threat? IMHO when linux will run on anything from a $20.00 machine, to a high end server, using any of the large list of supported hardware, why would apple be a threat?
I don't see apple getting too much into the embedded market any time soon, this is a nitch that linux (free) all ready has a good foothold in that mac (cost) would have a difficult time getting into, if they even attempted to.
Papa johns has been doing this for years. Create an account, put in your different locations (home, office, friends) pick the order you want, delivered in the same amount of time as called in deliveries. Most of the time its even cheaper, they allways have internet specials.
I would guess that a company that delivers different resturants food to your house would naturally take much longer then if you just picked it up your self, but for the chain companies that are handeling it them selves, papa johns has been doing it right for a whilel.
The product is not free, the beta is free, and will expire on OCT 1st. In TFA it says near the bottom that they have not decided on a price, meaning that most likly it will not be a free product.
They may have a dumbed down version to replace ms paint, but who knows.
I have had this same problem many of times, most installs requires 3 installs. 1: install linux on second partition. 2: reinstall windows because partition 1 was formattted. 3: install linux again.
Best bet is to allways backup everything on your windows machine, I normally use this as a good reason to reinstal windows every few months.

SuSE linux has been doing this for a long time now. Its dumbed down to the point where you can simple choose one of 6 sections of what type of linux install you want (server, workstation, developer, etc) and choose what size partition you want to install (again some selection type from radio buttons).
This was a few years ago from my last expierence, but its simple. Its also #1 in Europe, and now owned by Novel.
Very strange distro to have with this book, they should have chossen one of the "buzz" distros, sience this is what the book is about. Not trying to start a distro war, but come on, a distro that has a name people would have heard once or twice would have been nice.
It is going to kill off their business software devision, hardware devision, PC games, console, web, portables, etc etc.
Microsoft isn't just PC software, they are everywhere, yes if microsoft suddenly lost all the revenue they had coming in from their PC software devision it would hurt them, but not kill them.
One of the companies I work for have a product labled Session by wave 3 software.
It is a conference applicaton, as well as desktop sharing/controling and a very powerful whiteboard, sounds like it would work well with what you are looking for. It should cover most everything you would need.
" Well, last time I checked negative criticism was still a legal and moral practice"
You would think this is true, so did I until my previous hosting company filed a lawsuit against me for "defaming their company" after I went online and posted my expierences with them. Luckly the company I work for let their lawyer handle the situation.
I agree with you on the track ball mice. I have also been using trackball mice for around 10 years now (and the same one), and have had to replace dozens of mice that were used with my other machines/laptops.
Trackballs seem to last longer too, since the only moving parts are a few wheels the ball spins on.
Also the ability to work on any surface helps out in many situations, where as even with optical you still need to carry a mousepad around with your laptop.
Finally they just feel more natural, I switch between a standard mouse for my other machines (besides my primary) and my mouse, as well as my touchpad on the laptop, if the trackball just allways felt better, with no wrist/arm movements, just finger movement.
Many ISP's offer a cd that you use to setup your services.
Why not have built in software (firewall) that by default blocks port 25, and port 80 (inbound) irc in/out etc, and make the customer need to specifically allow those ports if they want them open.
That way, the 99% of the customers who never use those ports will have cleaner or safer machines, while the people who do run their own servers have the ability to use them.
FTFA: "Apple said the risk of combustion was very small. The recall comes after the US Consumer Product Safety Commission received six reports of batteries overheating, two from the US and the rest from around the globe."
Yeah only 6 reported to the safety commission, and im just guessing the number of people who haent reported it is much higher then that. That sounds a little more serious then a precaution.
" Unwanted children are an economic burden that put poor women "over a barrel", forcing them to work cheap."
No, Im guessing a large majority of woman who are dumb enough to put them selves in a situation where they would have an unwanted child (aka have a child at age 14, unprotected sex, sex out of marrage, inability to support a child and so on), who are also poor are most likely Not very educated, low level of interested to excel to a higher position, or make achivements in their lives.
Meaning, they are not capable of anything besides a low paying job.
"Take any Dell system, and I bet that I can make a system that's exactly the same for cheaper. You won't get any 'extras' such as a crappy printer/scanner/fax/cheese grater along with it, but you'll get a computer none-the-less."
You might be able to make a cheaper system for FREE, aka not charging for your time, taking into consideration stocking charges, book keeping etc etc. Things that a company like Dell needs to keep track of and pay for, and when you include all the other crap that most people need anyways (yes people do need printers and fax machines).
Also taking into consideration their random deals like free shipping, free monitor etc, bundled OS and software (that is not pirated, and windows based) then no, you can't beat dell.
This wouldn't have happened from 1 single moron. It would have required 1 moron, 1 managment moron (I belive managers are the only people at most places like this allowed to call the cops) and at least 1 or more police officers, and it only got taken care of once the secret service was called in.
Its not like a single cashier held this person here, and arrested them, many people were involved in this fuck up.
"tends to view privacy as something to be circumvented"
I don't remember, but I think when I was a kid (20 years ago) didn't we have the right to privacy here in America. In fact wasn't this always one of the key items that made America so great?

WinMX is popular?
From just doing a simple search on downloads.com for p2p.
Morpheus 4.9.2, added 6/8/2005 = 134,000,000
iMesh 5.0 added 1/5/2005 = 95,000,000
WinMX added 07/12/2004 8,700,000
And from what I remember all 3 of these sites use downloads.com for their file providers.
Is it all ready that time of the year when PHRACK makes a last call for their last issue ever?
Yes, cheap computers are going to kill microsoft.
It is going to kill off their business software devision, hardware devision, PC games, console, web, portables, etc etc.

Why offer the ability to download an ep of a show when you can charge 40+/- dollars for a 10 ep DVD.
US Consumer Product Safety Commission received six reports
Yes only 6 reports to the product safety comission. How many people didnt report it.

From what it sounds like they are offering the video for free if you buy the song.
Can you buy the video by its self? Or is it offered for download (free?) after you buy the song?

From what I am reading it comes down to the following.
GPL your software, but you are not distributing it. Pay license fee.
Closed source software, but you are not distributing the source. Pay nothing.
I think this would really halt many people and companies from using the GPL as their license if this were to happen.
