  1. Re:It's just the opposite for me on Do Software Versions Really Matter? · · Score: 0
    To make your head really spin - try to keep the various Solaris / Sun Unix versions straight. Trying to manage a site with several versions of Solaris active can be a real headache. Version numbering adds to the confusion when finding appropriate applications and patches. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_(operating_system)/ shows the Solaris vs SunOS version mapping.

    Solaris version SunOS version
    Solaris10 = SunOS5.10
    Solaris 9 = SunOS 5.9
    Solaris 8 = SunOS 5.8
    Solaris 7 = SunOS 5.7
    Solaris 2.6 = SunOS 5.6
    Solaris2.5.1 = SunOS5.5.1
    Solaris 2.5 = SunOS 5.5
    Solaris 2.4 = SunOS 5.4
    Solaris 2.3 = SunOS 5.3
    Solaris 2.2 = SunOS 5.2
    Solaris 2.1 = SunOS 5.1

    Solaris 2.0 = SunOS 5.0
    Solaris 1.x = SunOS 4.1.x

    It is about as bad as the Windows versioning.

    And isn't that the real bottom line? Let's get a future source of cheap labor that can keep the Intel-MS train running.

    I am amazed that nobody has mentioned the comment from the article that Nigerian kids are browsing for porn and that the OLPC PCs will now be fitted with internet filters.

    It is truly amazing to me that youth that are from the remote third world would jump into searching for porn with their new PCs. I would have thought that without the influence of the western media that they would not have a drive to search out porn sites. But - I guess that it only takes one kid to find a site and then share his "find" with his buddies.

    Furthermore, any software defined radio, open source or not, can be made "open source" by simply replacing the binary in flash. Which means that any software defined radio, open source or not, can be hacked. Which might be a bigger issue worth more discussion.

    I don't see how re-flashing the memory makes the radio "open-source". I guess at that point it is "open-source" (since you know the source of the current program), but - I don't think the radio will have any predictable or desirable operation. A random binary flash will not be able to functionally replace an engineered program. It sounds like you are suggesting hacking the radio to figure out the program's function. This might be useful unless you destroy the device through the experiment.

    At our supermarket, the U Scan is a set of four self-serve kiosks that are centrally monitored by one live cashier. There is a camera, but it simply is viewed at the cashier's station. The cashier makes the determination as to what the item sitting on the scale and showing up on the camera is. Is it an apple or a tomato?

    Maybe someday our local store will be gifted with a workable image database.

    In the meantime - I hope the robot can tell a dandelion from a daffodil!

    Sounds like a great idea - but

    Professor Despommier lists many advantages of this revolutionary kind of agriculture. They include:

    • Year round crop production in a controlled environment
    • All produce would be organic as there would be no exposure to wild parasites and bugs
    • Elimination of environmentally damaging agricultural runoff
    • Food being produced locally to where it is consumed

    How do you create an organic environment without organisms? Beyond that - how do you keep those bugs out?

    Discover Card has an automated system which will issue you a one-time use card number. It is a "random" number generated for you at the time of purchase. This number is then valid only with the merchant that you shared this "Card Number" with. It can be used with re-curring purchases.

    This does provide you with some additional level of security since the number is useless to anybody else.
