I think it's a bit stupid to assume because the attacks have gone down are a result of not paying up. IMO it would be more of an indication of companies paying up.
Think about it. If you run a large corporation that downtime means losses that can run into the millions of dollars even for a short duration, add to this the cost of untangling any sort of mess associated with this downtime and that's a heafty bill. It would be stupid to risk the possibility of losing money (and possibly clients) due to downtime when it can be easily avoided by paying a fraction of the cost to some monkey with a botnet.
The last thing any corporation is going to do is admit to this. On top of that, any extortionist that knows you don't over extort organisations.
Seriously, saying that DoS attacks are down due to people not paying up is just stupid.
I dunno about being "naturally hard" on electronics being the only cause of these kind of failures...
I thrash the crap out of every electronic device I have - computers, PDAs, Laptops, consoles, even my nano (yes, the ones that supposedly got cracked screens, huge dings on the back, no issues with it).
IMO most repeated failures come from people:
1. Doing things they aren't supposed to do to the systems
2. Getting angry and taking it out on the system... rather than their own stupidity
3. Ignoring basic operating environment restrictions
Also there's the factor of spilling drinks in your systems... but with a console that's kinda hard unless you're sitting on the floor with said drink right next to the system.
haha... for sure, the whole XP/Vista thing is leaving a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. 2k was far better.
One thing I would like to raise is that you can't trust this article anyway. Cnet being heavily biased towards M$ (if they aren't in collusion, M$ probably has a large share in Cnet). Comparing Vista to OSX is like comparing a Japanese 4cyl Sports car with an "in your face", bling bling, paint job to an elegant european sports saloon with an understated appearance.
I'm only replying to this one because the article title is a load of wank.
Diablo III retard, Diablo III.
There's been a stack of leaks in regards to this.../. even posted some. One was actually quite reputable, from the same orchestra (can't remember, some eastern european one) that did Diablo II music.
Wake up/., the ball keeps getting dropped on not only game news lately, and the troll situation is getting out of hand. IMO/. is becoming a myspace without profiles.

hey, I have "bad" karma for talking the truth. I read/. for amusing & insightful replies and to speak my own opinion. I say "fuck the tards, say what you want".
dumbass trolls get karma all the time, I care not, rate me as a troll to make yourselves feel better, still doesn't detract from the fact that numbskulls pwn the net.
Firstly, Systems Administrators DO NOT look after servers in most large corporations, they look after department's machines, and liase with Server Administrators & Network Administrators.
Secondly, to expect any "system", not "server", to have "uptimes in the range of months", is a load of horseshit. While a system might break, the server(s) might still be up. If your company has been around for more than 2 seconds you realise that things go wrong. Having worked for a few large and small companies, I can assure you that there is NO correlation between good administrators and systems going down. There are so many variables that a good administrator even has a hard time keeping up.
While I am a Linux admin, I don't see where your justification for even bringing up Linux in your post comes from. Is it just to show that you "know" stuff? It's idiots like you that cause the Linux community to get a bad wrap - a Linux fanboys' answer to everything is run Linux, a Linux advocate gives people a choice.
As someone who supports Dell machines (and no, I'm not a Dell employee), I can attest that in a corporate environment most drives last well into the warranty, if not, past the warranty end date. Our biggest client uses a mix of 90% dell, 10% HP machines. They even fork out for extended warranties just because the machines are so reliable.
We even support older machines that are way out of warranty with a support contract, good old Dell GX150's (P-III, early P-IV). There are some even with original 9GB HDDs in them, which only get replaced due to lack of space, and not from failures.
I strongly doubt it... HL2 was met with some stiff opposition from the gaming community. Thus the shift to the BF series. Cstrike had already gone to dust (pardon the pun) before HL2, and most gamers, myself included, avoided HL2 like the plague.
I personally moved to BF series, and only recently moved to WoW. I see no reason to buy a new game at the moment, unless it's for my Wii. Nuff said I think.
ASUS supply XP as an option, which I was happy about as I just bought an F3JP. It was actually even cheaper than the Vista models, plus I got to "upgrade" to Vista (so the copy I get can be used for testing).
We don't even supply Vista where I work as we supply business machines to corporate clients - they refuse to use Vista due to the known issues with their internal software. It's actually a good thing because we supply systems to banks, and the last thing you want to hear is "sorry, I cant give you any cash because Vista has determined you and your account is incompatable with this bank".
It looks like M$ really dropped the ball on this one, I can see two possible outcomes:
1. Apple take majority market share, everyone starts smelling roses, you know, cliched stuff.
2. Consumer flavours of Linux take off, everyone starts smelling roses, you know, cliched stuff.
3. Microsoft fixes Vista, we all cry about how it's not fixed, M$ makes profit.
You also might want to look at the fact Apple do use AMD chips... as their video cards (ATi). I think it was merely a fact that Intel offered a better all in all package when it came to CPU/Chipset/etc than AMD could come up with. Most AMD boards are a steaming piles of dogshit, while the CPUs rock, AMD need to bring their chipset development inhouse to score better contracts like the intel/apple partnership.
This is probably the smartest deconstruction of this "patriotist" type bullshit I see everywhere here on/.
If the US as a whole woke the fuck up and smelt the coffee (shipped in from other countries US administrations have oppressed) maybe tyrants like George W Stalin wouldn't be in control of your country.
So long as there's idiots in power who believe the best way to "defend freedom" *cough*bullshit*cough* is to attack another country, the world will continue to be destabalised. I mean, come on, Vietnam are still feeling the effects of the American War (to be correct it wasn't the Vietnam War), not to mention the "collateral damager" of countries like Cambodia & Laos.
While I don't wish harm to any person serving in a war, I do wish harm to ANY soldier who is commiting the atrocities that are currently being carried out in Iraq - it is NEVER right to kill innocents (I know some slackjawed yokel is going to run with that comment, GL with that one).
Anyway, my point is really this - invading a country, whether you call it "liberating" or "bringing freedom", is NEVER right... in fact, under the rules of engagement, it's counted as "agression", which is worse than terrorism.
Indeed, even here in Australia our government funds a lot of movies. There's a whole government agency Film Finance Australia . You'll find that a lot of our biggest & best movies come from funding provided by FFA.
Maybe if US citizens realised that the world is a bigger place than the huge hunk of junk that the USA is then we wouldn't have huge messes like RIAA, MPAA, Iraq, Afghanistan, the list goes on.
You seem to forget, "ratings" for games are not reflective of the quality of the game. Plenty of games out there get high ratings, *cough*S.T.A.L.K.E.R*cough*, but are actually bollox.
My suspicion is that most game sites/mags get kickbacks to rate this horrid games higher than what they actually should.
It's a sad day when utter crap like Oblivion is held in any esteem.
To be honest, I just cancelled my WoW account due to the expansion being totally shit. It's ruined the game IMO, there's no reason to keep playing a game that's totally dead.
As an aussie... I assure you that this was just logical progression.
1. make beer
2. drink beer
3. make power with beer
4. ????
5. profit
I just hope they don't use XXXX waste for it... the bacteria will spend more time throwing up than making energy.
uhhh... it isn't...
who let this monkey infront of a keyboard?

The new Office design is much better than any previous version, in my opinion.
You have to be kidding... I bet you like day-glo orange boots too...

Why don't you just invade... ahem... "liberate" his house? you know, the right winger solution to everything...

yay, sales are up on amazon... maybe it will offset the $1.7 billion loss by a few dollars.
doesn't he know?
the internet is for porn
hahaha, what consequences? M$ could walk through a shit storm and not get a drop on them, they're going to double screw Iowa I reckon.
as an avid mac/*nixaholic can I say thank you - emo + fanboi = people hating a platform
