  1. the blame game on Gamers Grapple With VA Tech Shooting · · Score: 1

I hate seeing this but it always happens. Everyone points to something first because they cant accept the fact that to understand a situation they have to do research. People just want an easy one line answer to everything! Life isn't black and white, there is a full spectrum that we must keep in mind. People are lazy. With juggling work or school or family or whatever thinking is last on the list apparently. In this case they guy was mentally messed up and had a crappy life up to that point. Also everyone that points a finger on this or that, gaming, guns, terrorists etc just doesn't want to accept that at the end of the day the only thing left to blame is ourselves! Responsibility is seriously lacking in this country. Social responsibility. Family responsibility. When we bring a life into this world it's our responsibility to make sure that person does something good with themselves and doesn't kill people. rant over.

  4. uhh i gots an idea on CS Programs Changing to Attract Women Students · · Score: 1

From my experience I can say that people that are CS grads or are working programmers or are just into software and stuff were into it in high school and earlier. All my friends who are were in CS all learned a large bulk of their programming knowledge when they were in high school. Which says a lot. Good programmers aren't just coders and blah, they are smart well educated people and for the most part self educated. I never really relied on school to teach me what I need to know. I also have the drive to be able to do everything myself (working on cars, fixing stuff, building stuff etc.) Not everyone has this desire or need to really understand everything they come across and it's that desire that is really needed to be good. As for the lack of females in CS I would attribute it to parenting and tv, movies, media etc. People that weren't or aren't bad ass enough to be able to do things on their own like learning or making stuff, I believe, are the ones that bring upon this image that it is not cool to be a programmer or CS student or whatever. There is also the factor that to be good at programming and such you cant put much of your time into your social life (well I am not applying that to everyone, I know many good people that balance it all). Also for the most part parents of kids who are in high school or are going into college are from before computer stuff became cool and way awesome so I think that contributes to parents pushing their daughters to do something other than CS or other hard sciences. As I am a supporter of influencing children to make change in the world I suggest that we start from elementary school all through high school making some sort of requirements or something to encourage computer proficiency and instill an image that programming and CS are cool and good things. Also we would have to make a few really well written dramatic tv series' showing software developers and hackers and whatever in a cool light (of course played by sexy actors because we have to lie to everyone first to begin to make it true!) So that means stuff on the WB(or whatever CW)and NBC and CBS. But these shows need to not show a farce of the computing world, just exaggerate on who the people involved are.

  7. Re:More of a flying hovercraft, not a helicopter on Combined Hovercraft and Helicopter · · Score: 1

actually the only difference between a simple propeller and a helicopter rotor is that the rotor on the chopper has variable angle adjustment to increase lift. basically with a rotor or propeller you can change 3 things. The angle that it cuts into the air and the overall length of the blade and the speed at which it is spinning. Changing these basically affects how much air the thing can plow through. The thing about a hovercraft is that it doesn't have a means to counter the torque from the main prop. But its also usually not very far above ground or water, and has a skirt to direct the air down. I think the body of this hoverthingie kind of acts like the skirt of a regular hovercraft but kinda flipped inside out.

  9. Re:Doesn't work, refer back to Newton, Faraday et on Zero-60 in 3.1 Seconds, Batteries Included · · Score: 1

yea umm you don't need much to make an electric car go. And you dont need gears and shafts and whatnot. A lot of the guys building electrics put 2 motors in direct drive on the rear wheels, they are pretty light (like 15 to 25 lbs each motor) and then its all hooked up to a mad speed controller. Unfortunately good battery technology is hard to come by for the average builder, which cuts the range at the moment to custom jobs but that will change. For an example there are electric drag cars that put over 2000 ft/lbs of torque to the ground. Also if you wanna overcome loss of traction on launch you don't have to increase weight (there is enuff weight from batteries anyway). You can increase wheel width or diameter or get some launching skills and control it off the line. Good drivers are there for a reason, otherwise you would just use an on off switch instead of a throttle.

I seriously think the country as a whole should be pumping money into the school system because now its not just the problem of too many people living too long or something and not enuff people putting into social security for each person that is receiving but that there will be too many idiots that cant make enuff money to put money into the system a guess what happens after that!
