    Maybe.

Will it copy stuff from it's competitors?
    Yes.

It's easier/cheaper to let someone else design something and then design a product that works just like it. That's why PCs are so popular (and everywhere - you don't even call them IBM Clones anymore..just PCs). IBM designed an architecture and then there were copies made of it.

Having to do "installpkg workbone-final-4.2.1.tgz" seems like more than it's worth. Well, maybe they could include some symlinks to the long filenames.

For all I know, the webservers I download from could be on the other side of the planet (that might explain some terrible download speeds). Also, no matter how cheezy the ANSI graphics looked at the time, they still required some really good skills. Now, just download Photoshop from warez.slashdot.org (Pater/Potter/CowboyNeal said it existed in one episode of GiS), and you can make all the nifty title grapgics you can. Blah, boring.

    [Going off on a tangent]

In a way, I feel like I missed out on a lot of the BBS stuff. Just when I was really getting in to it, some of the boards I used were starting to become parttime ISPs. CompuServe was SOO cool because you could search an encyclopedia (WOW. find ANYTHING you WANT!). Then C$ gave everyone 5 hours of all services p/month. So we got on the web. Wow! We can download pictures and see them at the same time....woooaahhhh! Now, it's all glitzy. I want to go back to my roots.

On a slightly related note (in that BBSs were really cool-looking despite the constraints) I wish BBSs would come back. Sometimes, the web just seems too big for me. I know they won't. (At least, not like they were when I was in to them (right before they all started to die ): ))

Agreed. And so it has been with the last three or four episodes. I enjoy the techie banter (is banter the word? I don't know. Rambling, maybe.) but these last couple shows have had a rather low signal:noise ratio(low signal:high noise).

Also, they used to scramble the cussing or watch their mouths. I don't think that, being the influential group that we/they are, I want people who are putting on a radio show, and saying that their typical geeks, to be using that language (ACK! I sound like an old-timer parent!) For example, in one of the earlier shows, I think it was Rob who said 'holy shit' (using asterisks is stupid, you can still tell what I'm saying) and they scrambled it. Okay, I will admit that scrambling 'shit' is a bit much (although, you could have just said 'holy crap' but, as the maid on the original "The Parent Trap" said, "What's done is done.") but, come on, Emmet says 'fuck' and it's left alone. Personally, I think there are something like levels of 'badness' with cuss words. 'Fuck', 'bitch', etc, are more 'bad' than 'shit', 'ass', 'damn', 'hell'. Besides, why use the F word when we have FSCK!?

[/me steps down from soap box]

Anyway, watch the language(scramble it out, use other words), and more signal, less noise.

    Thanks!

I'm willing to bet that making proprietary parts, while expensive because they have to design it themselves, would end up making things cheaper for us because we cannot use them in any way other than in this box. Of course, you could hack it, but that's illegal. Not like that's ever stopped people before...but still, it IS illegal. Unless you were designing a box to play the same games and the box ran Linux...then reverse engineering for purposes of interoperability might come in to play.
