IIRC, Hemos said that it began to suck when they got the domain. CmdrTaco asked them all during one episode of GiS when Slashdot began to suck. I'm not sure which episode as they haven't worked out the written transcripts yet. Perhaps they should get a stenographer like they have in courtrooms with those funky keyboards with phenomes on them? That would be nice. Especially for episodes where we don't know what they said.

Anyway, this means it's been sucking for a long time. Perhaps it's now just intolerably noticeable?

While I hate all this "We don't want to maintain it and we don't want you to have it. Buy our new console!" stuff, people would be quite afraid to make anything of any quality and then copyright it. And those who did have stuff under copyright would probably be quite afraid for their lives and would probably stop making whatever it was that they were making.

And who holds the copyright on a work when there are multiple designers/creators?

By "bugs" do you mean things like ants and flies? Or do you mean bubbles that get into the varnish? If it's either of the two, I can see how a tooth pick can help get them out (though it would be rather difficult to clean varnish off ants and flies). But a propane torch!? First, isn't varnish flammable? Second, how would this help get bubbles out? And torch the ants? That would not help them one bit. I'm not sure whether you mean bugs literaly or figuratively anf you're really talking about bubbles.

  9. Re:Holes on Philips VCR Records MPEG On (D-)VHS tape · · Score: 1

Ah. Correct. I was referring to holes in both places. Sometimes (on the DAT tapes I have) there are holes on the tape itself to tell the drive when it's reached the beginning or the end of a tape. And then you can copy-protect regular cassete tapes by popping out some little notch.

    (Thanks for the clarification)

  10. Re:illiteracy on Philips VCR Records MPEG On (D-)VHS tape · · Score: 1

[S|He]'s saying that this media probably is the same as regular VHS media except with a few small holes at some point in the tape.

If you look at the beginning and end of DAT tapes for computers, you'll see that there are small holes there through which the drive shines a light. On the other side of the tape, there is a light sensor. When it senses the light, it says "Ah, beginning of tape." or "Ah, end of tape."

3.5" High-density disks store 1.44MB of data. Double-density disks store 720K. (720K * 2 = 1.44MB) The only difference between the two types of disks is that the 1.44MB disks have this extra hole in the upper-left corner. Your disk drive shines a light through that to see if it's a DD or HD disk. So, some people started to punch out that hole on DD disks and turn them in to HD disks, doubling their capacity. (Useful for 720K AOL disks.)

Now, for these tapes, there will probably be some sort of pattern of holes in the beginning and/or end of the tape, telling the unit that it is a digital tape. With the right tools, and knowing where to put the dots, assuming that the tape is the same material, we could turn ordinary, cheap VHS tapes in to high-quality, expensive digital tapes. Of course, then it would quickly be posted on a webpage, sent to Slashdot, and then Phillips would fix it. Sort of like the iOpener. Geesh, gotta keep that stuff underground!

    Hmm...coherent enough? :)

  13. Re:is it some sort of pci or isa card? on Mini Dual-Celeron Board · · Score: 1

It looked to me to be VLB (Vesa Local Bus). It came out after ISA and was/is faster than ISA. PCI came out shortly after (before? I'm not really sure) and there was a brief struggle before PCI won out. The advantage to VLB was that you could still use your old ISA stuff. I've only seen VLB slots on 486 motherboards. PCI was probably faster and now definately is. PCI is also smaller (shorter) and doesn't mean you have to have a long motherboard for the cards. I'm sure someone else could improve on what I've said here.

Oh, and no, they are not VLB, they just look like it. They go in to some kind of passive board. Something like that. (Read earlier posts) But it would be cool if I could put a dual Celeron 500 board with 1 gig of RAM on my old 486 for compiling kernels on a RAM disk :). It would greatly improve compiling speed. Now, if they'd only make a 16-bit ISA version for my 386 SX.

so the whole web is illegal now? No. Only the part that lives in Japan. That's what makes these rulings so goofy. If you ban something in one country, the nature of the web means that it will still get around. Remember that TCP/IP was designed so that, even if there was a break in the system (say, an entire city bombed to the ground) there would be redundant links and the information would get to it's destination via one of these links. I wonder what the inventors of TCP/IP think now of what their invention is doing. It makes lots of good stuff possible (very quick communication) and, at the same time, lots of bad stuff possible (illegal distribution of copyrighted works). Well, I guess you pretty much HAVE to have a balance. Whenever you design something that works very well in our favor, there's usually a bad side effect. For example: cars. They get us pretty quickly from A to B. But, then sometimes people/animals are killed by them. And then there's the pollution. The same goes for electricity. And WATER! (rain == good ... flood == bad) Thank GOD for balance.

For others, God can be the love of a friend. But you cannot enjoy the love of a friend before your other basic needs are met. Relating more to your post, yes, teaching them to use computers and to participate in the "technological revolution" (yea! I'm trendy!) would be wonderful but I think we'd have to be sure that their other, more, err, Darwinian?, needs were met. After all, if you were on the verge of starvation, would you like gobs of computing power or a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich? Hmm, perhaps that was the wrong question to ask on this forum. I think my point is somewhat obvious....just in case, no, we couldn't just throw computers at them when they are starving, we'd have to wait for them to be well-nourished. Or better yet, we in the first world could get our heads out of our asses and realize that there are other freaking people on our rock!

The reason they can't sell $99 flatpanel systems is that they would go down the tubes. These things must not cost only $99 to produce because, if they did, they wouldn't care if people were installing Linux on them because Netpliance would still be gaining a profit. If everyone is buying these i-openers and installing Linux on them, Netpliance is not getting any profit
