Hm.... Well as a person that lived in USSR, I would like to ask you a question what this slogan meant meant: "Communism by year 2000!".
This is a real demonstration slogan. So even in USSR no one believed that USSR was communist, but "progressive socialism"(translation from russian).
Are you an idiot or what?
Do you know the definition of monopoly?
And monopoly is not the direct problem here. In your example with cars:
Lets presume that there is only 1 brand of cars from only 1 manufacturer.
That manufacturer decides that they want a piece of automotive A/C pie. So they start producing cars with patented, digitally controlled power connector for car A/C, so they start pushing other A/C manufacturers out of market by leveraging their automobile business.
And hey, that just happens to be antitrust violation.
And if you start saying that they give IE for free, you are stupider than I presumed.
Offices are only for people who have a business need to have private meetings.
Or, people who have a business need to shut out the world every now and then and concentrate, or people who have a business need to work with expensive or confidential stuff which they don't want to trust to a filing cabinet lock, etc.
Collaboration is a really nice sounding word, but ultimately collaboration, distraction, and gossip are just different products of the exact same thing.
For once now and then there should be quiet places in the workplace.
There are not too many people who need t work with "expensive or confidential stuff", and those can be usually clustered and placed in one workspace(like network admins working with "expensive or confidential" servers and data).
Sure there are exceptions where you really need to have an office.
While not intending to bash our smart Indian colleagues, Indian universities are churning up a large number of code monkeys that produce a lot of code that is non scalable whatsoever and is getting slower with each core added to you favorite CPU.
That's why I "like" Apple. If you don't like something about them, it's you who is wrong. And now, if you suspect/have proved a security flaw, you still are on the wrong side of things.
Microsoft locks you in to software, leaving hardware selection free, Apple locks you in completely. Now tell me who's worse.
A) Why would Japan, the second largest economy in the world, need to be under US patronage? If you not feeding your army you're feeding someone else's.
B) Though denying Israel has it's own tactical nukes. And no one in that region has or planing to have any nukes.
C) Concerning Taiwan, China is currently kept in check by economy NOT military.
D) South Korea is the only place where real problems MAY occur. Though North Koreans are not really friendly, they are in no case stupid to start a war against a country that is backed by multiple other countries, that have already shown that WILL fight back. And let us remember North Korea has NO backing from any country, since USSR collapsed and China has no value in real backing.
Have you been on the moon when RoR hit the hype peak? J2EE got the most hitting, PHP got some also, basically RoR came into existence because they hated EVERYONE! Thankfully people grow up and get smarter.
The diff is that Wii is LowPrice X LowVolume ? Where is the business logic in that? Or are they undermining US market? Because there are tonnes of Wii in Europe... I can buy one any time I wish... And if I order fro a delivery(next day) I get it even cheaper.
Oh... Yeah they will... With my mobile 3G card and a nice notebook with ATI Radeon x300 I played WoW for whole 1.5 hours on the beach... If they had a place to plug in then I would have played for longer...
I am now interested how much did you pay for your diplomas? Because as a person who cares about science you should know that tools change and concepts stay. And I hope that you know the concepts behind PageMaker and not only where the right buttons are, because if you don't then you have the skill of knowing where to click in PageMaker and not what you describe as "layout is a hobby of mine (and possibly the only visual art-type-thing at which I have any skill)".
Are you an idiot? How many of your ex-classmates ARE professional designers WITHOUT specialized training? I am a developer, I have no idea why we were graded in school at art... I haven't drawn ANYTHING except diagrams SINCE I left school. But art classes are good for developing motor skills and eye to hand coordination.
>> A person who understands theory can figure out anything
In theory yes. But without any practical knowledge theory is useless. But I agree that teaching what is image manipulation is a priority and tools come last. Because to teach someone something that person should know what he is doing, not just bluntly clicking buttons. I know perceive problem with computer literacy that people are taught to click buttons not to work with a computer.
It's as if learning to read would only involve recognizing the letters and having NO idea what the text is about.
Computer ownership is one thing but the main reason is the human side of it. Most Indian developers are in IT not because they like IT but because that is the ONLY sure way of making a living in India. And even though there is still business and profit in OSS, it still requires persons personal interest in technology. I have seen a lot of Indian developers who HATE developing and do it out of necessity only. They do their job(sometimes even good) then return home and don't care about IT. That means that they are not INTERESTED in IT. They learn new technologies ONLY when they are forced to, not out of curiosity. C'mon... there are families where all children are developers, now how realistic is that?
>>Jobs that absolutely cannot work in this environment: >>- developer: needs absence of interruptions and quiet for concentration.
If you're the old school developer/academic, then maybe. But if you need need interaction with your colleagues then hell no. In current environment developer needs more collaboration that privacy, and for concentrated thinking there should be relaxation/green corners with comfortable sofas, plants and similar.
>>- sysadmin: same as security plus during a failure the accessability and interruptions would be detrimental. those guys should be down in the basement with the HW
>>- accounting/payroll: security concerns as well as customer privacy issues.
these guys should be in a separate office altogether, and mostly due to law requirements.
You are not supposed to have total privacy @ work. And cubicles are a horrible idea....
I work either in a separate office or an open space. If conentration is needed I go to the green corner and think there since it's quiet, relaxing and comfortable.
Mr. Putin IS THE FIRST president/leader/czar/whatever to honor the constitution and though they are usurping the power, you'd be quite fascinated HOW they are doing that. Reminding you that even though there are many calls for Putin to stay for 3rd term as president(th person that actually holds power in Russia) he still maintains that the Constitution has to be maintained untouched, witch in itself is the first time precedent in Russia EVER! So even there are "freedoms"* in Russia now, the pace is set for evolution not revolution.
* - Don't be fooled by the statements that there was more liberty in Yeltsin's Russia, since there was not. You are less likely to be killed for your thoughts in Russia today than in the "free" Yeltsin's times, so I'd say there is progress.
Huh.... Different experiences. I am using my GMail account for 2 years now, I don't hide my mail. I reveal it rather freely actually. I haven't got ANY spam messages. NOT ONCE.
But you are paying for performance ONLY when you buy anything from Intel that is faster than anything AMD has to offer. That is, if the X2 6000+ performs like E6700, then buying anything that is faster than E6700 means paying for performance otherwise money down the drain.
It's so sad that I aint gonna comment on it....
I think that Americans are hypocrites. who value privacy, but basically do nothing to insure it's protected.

We bash in attempt to convince those smart people to leave MS and work in a more open way.
Even though, you still have to change the mindset.

Hey... Puncturing both your eardrums is not only FREE but also THE MOST effective noise canceling technique...
Ad to actually add to this.
