Asus Eee 701 & 900 did not have a single "broken" driver, everything worked OK. Except only with the Xandros (which nobody liked).
The problem is that that was not enough: people still had problems and complained because the drivers did not work with their favourite distro. This is not good, no matter how you put it. This is what is wrong with Linux: there isn't "one" and they are incompatible.
Let me put it straight: I *love* my Asus 900. I like Linux very much, it is hugely better than Windows - but still it is "borked" - the device driver architecture is idiotic.
BTW you use #1 linux fanboyism "you are using wrong distro". I am really, really tired of it. Every time I have a complaint (no matter how legitimate) most of the comments say I use wrong distro. Apparently "right" distro does not exist...
OTOH they do have a 100% bullet proof defence - there isn't enough days in my life to check every distro there is.
su requires you to give a shared password to multiple administrators.
Not 100% true - you can make user "toor" with uid 0 (I admit this is not very good solution).
With su you can not give a group of people an ability to run a certain command as a different specific user.
I consider this a good thing: almost every program known to man will give you full root permissions this way (unless you mean "su userX"). False sense of security...
KISS does not necessarily mean simple to user - or running everything as root would be considered KISS. I do not consider that "simple" (though it is, in different sense, stupid).
#1 complaint of linux fanboys: "you use wrong distro".
Unfortunately there is no distro which does not pose the same problem: I still have to recompile every non-kernel device driver in every kernel patch. BTW, I use LTS (i.e. 8.04), not Windows.
It *IS* proven to be correct! It is very, very, minor point to argue what is "correct".
My point is exactly this - everybody else is "light years" away.
I agree, proven systems will be of higher quality than others. The costs? Just a few computer hours so I disagree heavily - we have seen far, far too many failures in _every_ un-proven OS there is. So unless you have counter example - I disagree.
Your equating this to compiler is so huge oversimplification that I must assume you really do think I have no clue. Therefore perhaps it is best to say - "HAND".
I'll have an another beer - licence my errors to that.
It is bloody fucking lot more than anybody else can claim.
To put it in current perspective: they have 100% vaccination against all viruses - past, present and future. Others are might get "soon" hopefully-working for H1N1.
Actually it would seem that they did prove other programs cannot at crash lose your data (provided MMU works and the assumptions on that are OK).
Compare the others to any other OS. They cannot claim a single bit more about their specs, their HW, a lot less about their programs and immensely hugely less about device drivers (this is microkernel, after all).
"Perfect" is such a silly notion that I will not even go into it. But if definitely does what they want as it works "perfectly" according to their specs. I do not know what "you" want.
So claiming "only" or "not" in every sentence just means that you cannot admit these guys are years ahead everybody else.
I'll never understand your kind of people: "I do not therefore nobody should".
Bloody hell, I occasionally browse slashdot - it has two side panels which takes huge amount of space so I have to scroll and zoom. Then I have to navigate to reply button and write text to it, in a small screen.
Apparently, according to your ideas, I should quit my free time too?
Well, I think the way you think about games, especially portable games: "get a life!" (or do I, was I just pulling your leg?).
The battery is very unlikely to get "disposed", rather "recycled". The amount of energy to recycle the battery seems to be negligible (compared to getting "new" lithium, or amount used by the car, or nagging done by fear-mongers).
How about CD text (for lyrics) + multi-session where the another session is standardised so that e.g. portable DVD players can show the artwork & perhaps the (low res) video? Then some iTunes/whatnot software which can load all that into iPod/whatnot and do the same?
I must stress that I am so old that I do like to hold something in my hand (so electronic-only is not good for me).
I'll be much, much more impressed if this is multi-session CompackDisk(tm) compatible. Then it would be nice. Sure, I know there are already a lot of CD's with extra information in another session, but they are not standardised/similar.
P.S. I am *that* old, i.e. I like to hold something in my hand. Besides, CD's has resale value & works immediately in my car, electronic music does not.
I do not know GS particularly, but the idea is the same: few get money (bosses), no real money is involved ("dyed money"/"futures") and the customer are lied.
I wonder... how difficult it is to change those passwords which are net accessible?
I have exactly one important (bank) and that is cancellable with one phone call - the same which cancels my debit & credit cards.
Furthermore you can trivially obfuscate. I once stored my pin written in Finnish slang within shopping list when abroad. Extremely safe: you'd have to be robbed by very fluent in finnish and he'd have to find the number (it does not look like one, not even for native) and associate it with the card. I'd worry about the traffic more.
I am absolutely certain my "definition" for what is crime differs from yours.
Mine has "until proven quilty" clause which yours apparently does not: there were no police nor court order, just a bunch of vigilantes (so called "security researchers", if you prefer).
Even child protection organisations called the law "short sighted" and "useless",
Not so in Finland, actually totally opposite.
We have a law which allows ISPs to block by police given list. "Pelastakaa Lapset Ry" (Save The Children non-profit-org.) has said the law is very good one.
The list is secret but due to the size of DNS (IPv4) it is easy to find out. A person who did find out it was put into the list... and at the moment there is no way to get out of the list. Besides, police is keen to put sites to the list but not keen at all to attempt to close down the sites...
BTW, already ÃKT (music & movie industry representation group, kinda RIAA+MPAA) wants to use it for blocking thepiratebay, etc.
I respectfully disagree, IMNSHO borked == wrong.

Still Asus stopped selling Linux.

I was talking about the kernel. With the kernel there is a problem which other updates do not pose: it breaks other SW.

sudo
Again? Second time this year?
And I have had sooo many complaints when I have kept KISS - su is several orders of magnitude simpler (no configuration files to fubar either).
Today, I updated my Ubuntu for sixth time this year . This will be seventh.
Now I just have two wishes:
1. Can't you, Gods of the Kernel, make it more stable?
2. At least make the device driver a bit more stable?
I will kill a goat if You wish, compiling and testing three device driver on three computers every month is a bit tiresome.
Please, Sirs!
all it does is move the bugs from the source code to the formal specification.
This is like saying "all it does is to to move bugs by entering binary numbers to entering Haskell (or any high level language)".
I.e. bullshit.
It *IS* proven to be correct!

I live and travel in different time zones.
The standard office file formats (i.e. doc, xls, etc) were the same from Office 97 to Office 2003.
No they were not. I still remember how Office 97 could not read all files created by Office 2003.
Except RSA, Kasumi, some Turbo codes in 3G/LTE, ...
The battery is very unlikely to get "disposed", rather "recycled".
The amount of energy to recycle the battery seems to be negligible (compared to getting "new" lithium, or amount used by the car, or nagging done by fear-mongers).
What on earth makes you think the government isn't more interested in taxing gas?
How about 7408?
I bet there are people here who do not need a search for that ...

MD5 is broken.
For example now http://www.copyclaim.com/ is completely useless: I can trivially "sign" two texts with same hash.
