You move up in the government simply by not being fired and putting in more years than the next guy.

Or by being incompetent. At least in Germany it's - despite crimes or similar - not possible to fire officials, so if you have problems with them in your department, the only ways to get rid off them is either illegal, waiting or promoting them.

The information-density of videos plain sucks. In one minute reading I can obtain far more information than in watching a 10-minute Video and that's even without "photo reading" or "speed reading"-stuff. Maybe it's the other way round if you are dealing with behavorial science, but not with some FD-cannons.

I remember discussions something like a year ago that pornproducers worried about HD videos, because they could reveal some flaws on their stars; there were even suggestions to show some acteurs only from a specific perspective. They could become very upset.

Well, then it should be even more important to be not to harsh with AMD and let them the time they need, because a monopoly would be a disadvantage to the vast majority.
Some posts seem reflect the attitude that AMD/ATI is bad and Intel is good, but the thing that really matters at least to me is that CPU X has a much better performance per money or energy consumption, so I choose it over CPU Y or graphics card W has no driver support for my OS, so I have to use Z.
That attitude is bad for the reputation of AMD and it could be difficult for them to gain market share again, even if they produce better chips, just because everyone thinks "AMD sucks" like today everybody outside the open source world thinks that Linux sucks, because they always were told so and not that Linux doesn't cover up as much needs as Windows does.

  14. Re:Speculation on Snortable Drug 'Replaces' Sleep For Monkeys In Trials · · Score: 1

    >>Probably laying down neural hardlines where temporary chemicals were making pathways before? As far as I know it's really something like that. I've seen an experiment from a researcher group (iirc from the Frauenhofer Institut in Germany) on TV, where they measured the performance of people in a reaction-game and their brain-activity in order to see if the brain learns while sleeping. The result was that the brain was very active at night, especially the areas they used for learning the game and the next day the tested people also performed much better. So at least if you want to increase your skills sleep probably will be important, however I don't know if this is that necessary if you only want to nuke someone.

  15. Re:Healthier is better. on 'Mind Doping' Becoming More Common · · Score: 1

It depends. If you need to learn something or have long-term projects, I fully agree, because your mind works a lot while sleeping and therefor a healthy way of life (which I think enhances quality of sleep like nothing else) results in much better performance. But if you have short-term objectives, like a test or a short deadline, some drugs may help a lot for this short period of time.
However, I don't think that concentrating on short-term goals is efficient, so maybe mind doping is only useful to the useless masses.

  16. Re:Socialism on Clinton Would Crack Down On Game Content · · Score: 1

Sometimes I doubt that. Here in Germany some politicians plan to forbid violent video game completely, of course in order to prevent violence. However, I can't see any (personal) advantages for these politicians by doing this, especially because violent video games belong to the "bread and circuses"-paradigm. I only can see two reasons why one would like to ban video games: they get paid from TV-stations or something like that, because games are better than their programs, or they really think that brutal video games make children violent and more important that restrictions could make anything better. Although the first may be the case, the second seems more realistic to me. Heck, my English sucks like politics.
