Ha, come to Howard County where we already have way too many police with way to much time on their hands. The point is though, its NOT making something more efficient because something like this never existed before.
I take back what I said about the funding for these, as I clearly had not read the story yet. I still disagree that these are revenue generators. Perhaps they are better termed Revenue Generation Enforcement by getting people to pay for mistakes they had previously weaseled out of.
Its the red light cameras, and speed cameras that are the cash cows of the local police departments.
I witnessed my friend get pulled over due to this about an hour before the story was posted on/. (We are both pizza delivery drivers). We are in Howard County, MD which is indeed inside the sphere of Washington DC Metro Area. He was stopped for an insurance violation, which - guess what - turned out to be false.
In a way, I like the use of these cameras - for now - as I have nothing outstanding on my name, and it should keep the cops tied up stopping other people who aren't me. But at what price? I don't think the cops should be spending their time pulling over the common public just because a computer said so.
I also don't see this as a big revenue generator as those are mostly speeders and red light runners, oh, and they have cameras for those all over MD already. I speculate these were purchased through DHS grants in the name of catching terrorists. Unfortunately it is now the police who appear to be the terrorists.
Ok, so I was watching John Roberts interview the brother of the guy who offed himself this morning. I swear it was the most awkward interview from start to finish that I have ever witnessed on cable tv.
John Roberts appologizes to the guy after he sneezes in the middle of the interview, and then he goes off onto a tangent...

google to me is more relevant than ever.
There are so many different search operators that you can use in the search bar. Math Operations and conversions, define: (word) quote: (ticker symbol) maps, businesses.... the list goes on.

It's gotten a lot better for non-techie users due to more websites testing against them though. I remember using Firebird 0.7 and about 1 out of every 20 sites would not render very well. For non-techie users, having to then start IE for more than 2 sites is a reason to not even try anything but IE.
That's absolutely true. About a year and a half ago I started using my mac exclusively, and with that I lost the IE Tab extension for Firefox. Initially I missed it every day, having to use Safari to try to render pages correctly. Now it is a complete non-issue.
Fundemental public services should not be privatized they should be public and operating in a fully transparent manner. Roads, Schools, Libraries, Utilities, and Health Care.
Yes, add Water to that list, and in my opinion, OIL (and other means of power generation).
True, its already controlled by the government (er Bush and Cheney), but not in the meaningful way that it should be protected from the open market. Until our country is off of this stuff, it should be our priority to make its import transparent, its production optimized, and the cost controlled from the swings of the market. Unfortunately oil is running our country and it is running it into the ground. But then again if we hadn't put the oil execs in the White House in the first place this might not have been an issue.
Power is a national resource and its production should not be tied to profit. Granted, paying for it is your own damn problem when you're using 17,400kWh/year.
I agree. I worked at a place where they claimed that some other software that was being used wasn't compatible with IE 7 so they kept IE 6 around much to my dismay.
Hey, it wasn't really my problem if they didn't care about internet security as long as I was able to access all the Russian porn sites I wanted.
Torrents are great, but you can't watch CNN live from a torrent - though sometimes you can watch stuff live on CNN.com, it just doesn't translate well to torrents.
My cable bill is never going away - at least its verizon fios.
I take my vengeance on Comcast by taking the Triple Play junk mail out of my mailbox, writing "Refused - Return to Sender" in sharpie and dropping it back in the nearby drop box. At a peak I was doing this about 3 times a week. It seems to have slowed recently.
- A somewhat more satisfied with FIOS Tv and Net over Comcast user.
I live near DC and have had FIOS for about a year. Its GREAT! I haven't noticed any difference in Capacity than Comcast, if anything the internet is stable and does not go slower when my neighbors are also online. Yay dedicated fiber optic lines!

Security, Add Ons, Speed, Reliability, Open Source, and -10 Microsoft points, I can go on... Seriously, are you still drinking the IE 6 Kool Aid?
Can you please come over and teach my mom. And while you're at it can you work on getting rid of AOL? I feel like she's stuck in the 90s.

Well, I guess, but we've really swallowed the cow already.
I know an old lady who swallowed a velociraptor... Either way, I'm buying lime futures.

Keep in mind that people who pay to watch TV are also paying to watch advertising. I can't really imagine why somebody would want to do that.
I pay so I can skip the ads

Shouldn't this be tagged "Whatcouldpossiblygowrong" with M$ history of rushing software to market and making predictions about their releases.

Yes. After 6 craptastic years of comcast cable internet, FIOS is hands down better and I have no need to ever switch back to comcast.
