"Dr. Jones discovers the lost continent of Atlantis, containing a portal that jarringly thrusts him backwards though time, to a land far far away. After pooling resources with a seemingly kind hearted philanthropist by the name of palpatine, they leverage indi's scientific earth-knowledge of stem cells to construct a device that elicits a rapid growth in users midi-chlorian count. After mysteriously falling into the wrong hands, it becomes predictably obvious that the galaxies last, best hope for peace requires Jedi Jones to fly his ship into an enemies space station and blow it up from within."
That is pretty funny.. Nobody buys ideas, and I think you'll be hard pressed finding anybody to invest their money in yours, regardless of what the idea is.
The only way to get around this is to have a proven track record of earning money for past investors. It's one of those annoying catch-22s we're all so familiar with.
The circular logic of needing to already have what you're trying to get.
Organized tournaments never mandate the drinking of beer. That's just asking to be sued.
Most people I know feel like drinking moderate amounts of beer helps them to play better. I tend to agree, insofar as a slight buzz will help calm your nerves and allow you to focus.
It's all about moderation. As your posts implies, drinking past a certain point will generally start working against you.
I compete in a lot of beer pong tournaments. In fact I fly out to vegas every year for the world series (mentioned in article) and even placed top 10 for 2008.
Bizarre to see something like pong make its way onto slash dot. There is another wii variant called Ping Cup in some type of party games package as well.
Personally I don't see the point to either simulations, since beer pong is ridiculously simple to set up an ACTUAL game in person. All it takes is cups and ping pong balls! Why are you in front of a television - the game is supposed to be social.
Anyway, I can chime in on one aspect that most slashdotters are probably unaware of. Beer Pong is extremely competitive. When you go to tournaments, it has nothing to do with getting drunk.
Make that shot and win that money. World series is 50k. Smaller local tournaments are 500-6,000 in prize money for 1st. These politicians need to leave my game alone, damnit.
Beer Pong is not a crime. The assholes are making me irked at my own country and envy other places' freedoms.
I'm not certainly not encouraging even half-way hateful speech half as much as I use it myself, but I'd certainly sport it against half of you slashdotters more than half as often as you deserve.
These people have some balls, it's actually kind of funny.
They sent me a letter in the mail pretending to be my bank, saying there are suspicious charges and to call this fraud number. Had the right mailing address and all of the logo's..etc
Of course the number was a phishing scam! They were asking me security questions to verify I was the cardholder, and little did I know my card was already maxed out 4 days ago. I'm guessing they wanted to reuse my information to call my bank and request the credit limit to be increased so they could keep on spending.
Fortunately my bullshit detector went off and I hung up, cross referenced the number..etc which confirmed my suspicions. I called the actual fraud line about 30 seconds later to take care of my slip up, and that's when I found out about all of the other charges. The BS part about it all is that none of the charges ever showed up on my online transaction history, so even if I were checking that by the hour I never would have been tipped off.
Anyway these guys can be pretty sneaky, but I was really disappointed in Chase for not having the transactions posted. At least I'm told that I won't have to pay any of the fees.
Java takes advantage of multi-threaded functionality extremely well, and the API simplifies things quite a bit. To suggest that we need to rethink the way we program computers may just be a personal issue of yours.
I like lisp a lot actually; I think it's fun, so don't get me wrong. However - the way the lisp is written is merely a style, which can be adopted into any imperative language as well. Unless you're talking about dynamic, self-altering code (which is a totally different subject than concurrency) there are no distict advantages to the lisp compiler that cannot be utlized in java.
I see your point, and indeed even as I was writing the OP I considered no birds can fly as fast as a jet.
However, low level conversion of sunlight into energy doesn't seem to be analogous to those sort of things.
Sunlight is a fundamental building block of life, and it stands to reason from an evolutionary perspective that if you could move around like an animal, but never have to hunt for food, you would be absolutely amazing compared to other life on this planet. The advantage of never having to hunt is astronomical.
Yet we do not see this combination in existance for some reason, which makes me doubt it's plausibility. Maybe I am just off base, but hey I was forthright in saying I don't know anything about solar energy.
I am not a mechanical engineer, biologist, or a chemist, and my technical knowledge of solar energy is lacking at best.
However, I am still observant enough to note a few facts: 1) There are no Ents, and in fact plants are extremely stationary compared to animals 2) No animal life, with necessary amounts of energy to run around, derive that energy from photosynthesis. Instead we have to consume daily quantities of other life. 3) Billions of years of evolution, at present, has more complex and effective systems than our technology.
It just seems like if evolution has failed to produce a photosynthesis model for the quantities of energy that our species tends to deal with, the overall potential for how far we can really take this technology may not be as far reaching as some make it out to be.
Can anyone who is more 'in the know' abate some of my ignorance here?
Well if it's tax payer dollars you are concerned about, shouldn't they be doing everything they can to help reduce the cost anyway, and therefore need less of a handout?
Besides, haven't you ever seen a business owner eat dinner at a public restaurant and then laugh about how they'll just write it off on their taxes?
Where you do think that money is coming from? All businesses get tax payer dollars one way or another.
If they just start hosting a bunch of legal torrents on their cache machines, wouldn't your computer link up to the local machines naturally?
This method obviously isn't as optimized as scanning user traffic for analysis, but it would still make an impact. You could also have contact with the torrent sites and request a list of the most popular legal torrents being downloaded.
These issues are complex, but going by the article summary I'm not sure we're all on the same page.
It sounded (to me) like they're looking for ways to maintain internet traffic, but help alleviate some of the costs of that traffic by using caches. Just because you pledge to allow certain levels of users access, it doesn't mean you have to provide them with that functionality in the MOST expensive way possible.
If they want to brain storm on ways to improve the means, I say have at it. Also I see nothing wrong with having certain users paying a higher fee for using a higher percetange of the system. It doesn't make any sense for somebody that likes to browse html at broadband speeds to be placed in the same category as a differnt person that likes to download 2-3 new dvd-quality movies a day.
Flew back from vegas on saturday, where a movie I was in premiered.
It was a documentary that a crew came out to film me for, which revolved around beer pong.
They did an amazing job with the film, and I'm really happy with how well it turned out.
It was also pretty cool to be a part of it, but somehow I doubt I'll have movie producers banging down my door after seeing me on screen haha.
Although if I do say so myself, I was probably the most attractive guy in that particular film.
One positive note, if I ever write a screenplay at least I know a few people in the business I can pester to read it.
I think the mouse is already outdated.
My webcam should be tracking my eyes, and know exactly where I am trying to click.
Just transfer the left / right mouse buttons & scroll wheel onto the keyboard and I can stop moving my hands!
Seriously, does no one else think it's impractical we have to keep taking our hands off the keyboard?
I have filed a few patents before.. so I know how much their pinch hurts in the wallet. What we basically have here is a governmental cash cow.
I want this sort of problem with my side business. Too many customers to deal with!?
If they start outsourcing to india, this kind of surplus could generate more revenue than oil. If anything I think they should be trying to INCREASE the growth of patent submissions, to better provide for the future generation of america.
If you think of the children, it becomes obvious that there is a lot to gain here.

If you have a problem with that, then grow up.
In our lifetime people will never care about the death of somebody they've never heard of.

After all, it's not where you're from but where you pay rent
And it's not what you make but how much you spent
That is pretty funny..

None of the doctors can access your medical records.

Great CS program.
I'll finally graduate this year.
Obviously this post went over your head.
Try reading the article summary, and then go watch the fellowship of the ring.

I agree with what you've said.
I am 6'4" and it seems grossly unfair to expect tall people, with wider hips and rib cages to have disproportionally smaller waistlines.
Now.. granted, I hardly sleep or eat, so I only weigh 160lbs @25, but I hear all that is supposed to change by the time I hit 40.
Well if it's tax payer dollars you are concerned about, shouldn't they be doing everything they can to help reduce the cost anyway, and therefore need less of a handout?

Short of a nuclear doomsday, robotic armies are our only hope to defeat countries with massive populations, such as china, in a war.
But this is a giant catch 22, because who else are we going to pay to manufacture their parts?
