  1. The uber-geek on Stephen Fry Helps GNU Celebrate 25th Birthday · · Score: 2, Interesting

Fry is rapidly building his geek-cred. He was great friends with Douglas Adams and the Monty Pythons, and now he promotes GNU. And wasn't he a character in some animated geek series?

  2. Re:Forgive my ignorance on 45th Known Mersenne Prime Found? · · Score: 3, Informative

No, that would be Max Planck.

  3. Re:Only in one part of Germany on Sharing 2,999 Songs, 199 Movies Is Safe In Germany · · Score: 1

True, but Nordrhein-Westfalen is the most populous of the states. What happens there is a lot more visible and important than what happens in, say, Thüringen.

  4. Re:Who believes the reason? on YouTube Stands Up To IOC Over Free Tibet Video · · Score: 3, Insightful

What's the difference? Surely it doesn't matter what the the actual reason internally in YouTube is, if the consequence is a strengthening of free speech?

  5. Why? on Tufts Tells Judge, We Can't Tie IP To MAC Addresses · · Score: 4, Insightful

For reasons which are unclear, the IT department then suggested that the RIAA next time send them 'notices to preserve information,' in response to which they would preserve, rather than overwrite, the DHCP data, for the RIAA's forensic benefit.

Why? The RIAA is not a court of law or even a government agency. Surely the university would have no obligation to comply with its requests? Talking about the RIAA in these terms ("notices", "forensic") lends it unwarranted legitimacy and authority.

  6. Sad. On the other hand: on "Last Lecture" CMU Professor Randy Pausch Dies · · Score: 1

  11. Re:Library on Decent Book Clubs for Sci-Fi Fans? · · Score: 1

In my experience, this only applies if you are in the US. In many other countries, decent sci-fi can be hard to come by in shops, let alone in libraries.

"Trust me, the future of Apple and Google may look bright from an economic standpoint, but these companies will be hated one day too. Sad, but true."

Why is this sad? Surely being suspicious of powerful entities is one of the better human qualities.

  14. Suggestion on FBI Looks Into Chinese Role in Darfur Site Hack · · Score: 2, Funny

'Someone in Beijing is trying to send us a message,' Brooks-LaSure said. What happened to just writing a letter?

  16. Promising result on Harvard Scientists Aim To Stop Cancer In Its Tracks · · Score: 5, Informative

Apparently, the major problem with cancer is that it isnt't just one disease, it's a whole myriad of conditions with one common characteristic - uncontrolled cell division. Finding one factor that brakes or halts growth in all cancers is a bit of a holy grail for scientists, and this enzyme seems to have at least some of the hallmarks.
