First, please realize that the DVD menus are simply MPEG files. You can create a static menu with the gimp, or if you're into motion, use Cinelerra or another video editing program like MainActor, Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premier.

Finally, you can add buttons to the menu with dvdauthor. There aren't many frontends for dvdauthor, but it is easy to use manually or you can kludge together your use of a video editor and qdvdauthor.

The truth is that a worm can propagate easily from any existing Linux distribution. Users do not need to be root to cause damage.

Firstly, if you're using a "single user" Linux distribution the only files that need protection are the user's files, not the operating system files. If you're running as that user and you get a virus, it can delete or steal those files - the files which actually have importance.

Secondly (and finally), the danger of worms exists not in accessing local files but in the ability to contact remote machines. Without a strong ACLs on accessing sockets, an operating system cannot be secure. No linux distribution, to my knowledge, has such ACLs on sockets by default.

The truth is that very few operating systems - and none of the current popular operating systems (MacOS X, Windows, Linux, Solaris, Irix, and HP-UX) provide any security against worms.

You can dock the toolboxes onto each other, and you can optionally have a menubar added to the top of each image window.

As far as the multi-window thing, you can make it work for you by using a virtual desktop/pager. Unix machines usually have this by default (for which the Gimp was originally designed), but you can install a virtual desktop/pager for MS Windows too.

Grab one of the many virtual desktop manages / pagers designed for MS Windows.

One problem with Photoshop's interface is that it is only really sufficient for a single-headed computer. It is true that most users only have single-headed computers, many (if not most) serious graphic artists use multiple displays. The Gimp resolve this by not limiting you to one window, plus with virtual desktops adding an artificial, broken, technical limitiation wasn't necessary. Once you try using virtual desktops you will realize why the Gimp development team thought it would be redundant to implement it themselves.

That may be so but instead of buying an Alpha, you can run Solaris on x86 hardware. You're also right about UML, but that is probably not as easily configured and certainly not shipped in a ready-made form with a distribution, compared to Sun's solution. 14. Re:Flamebait on One more G4 for the PowerBook? · · Score: 1

This is one the the reasons I bought a powerbook. The two most important things for me when buying a laptop were the trackpad and the keyboard.

Having had a Dell Inspiron 3500 in the past, I remembered how much I hated the 2 button trackpad. In Linux I couldn't paste without XFree86's 2->3-button emu (yuck). I couldn't find any decent 3-button trackpad - plus I'm left-handed so I needed the "right" button to be as big or bigger than the "left" button. This alone proved to be nearly impossible.

I finally decided on a Powerbook G3 /w firewire (pismo). It only had one button so I no longer had the problem of accidently hitting the wrong mouse button (a problem I had with the Dell), and the keyboard was awesome.

Linux/PPC has a sysctl for mapping keyboard codes to the mouse buttons. I've used this to map fn-ctrl and fn-alt to the middle and "right" buttons. I love it, I couldn't be happier and I'll probably never buy an x86 laptop again for the simple reason that they are completely incompatable with left-handed people (those that are not comfortable with using the trackpad with their right-hand, anyway).

There is a reason that the Gimp designers never thought of doing this and should probably never think of doing this, except as a favor to the MS Windows users - in X11 you can create a new workspace for the Gimp. The window manager already contains the capability of separating the Gimp from all the other applications, so why would they work to poorly immitate something that the user's OS can do considerably better without horrible drawbacks like disabling multihead (which is of huge importance to graphic designers)?
