Just a crapload of really cool eyecandy. It comes at a beefy performance cost though, but it can be used on even old and slow stuff.. i just wouldn't recommend it.

  2. Re:What a great idea! on Palm OS Spinoff · · Score: 1

MacOS is not tightly integrated into the hardware anymore. This used to be true on older machines running (I think MacOS6 was the last one to be put in ROM), but since MacOS 7 it is no longer in the system's ROM. You can emulate MacOS7 on x86 and on PPC machines you can run MacOS9 (no cpu emulation).

OSX is another animal, the kernel runs on a wide range of hardware, infact you can run OSX on x86 hardware today. Of course on x86 it must be run without the nifty MacOS GUI.. but you CAN run Xwindows on it. It would be possible to port the MacOS-X gui to another platform, it just hasn't been done (yet?)

I like my Mac, but it doesn't run that pile of garbage called MacOS. Linux runs good on it, although I may decide to move to Darwin or another *n?x.

Sure, I have an x86 linux box.. but I also have: an x86 FreeBSD box, a ppc Linux box, ppc netbsd box, etc.. This isn't helping people move to open source software and open minds. Closed source is bad, no matter how good the product or PR is.

How long will it be before people realize that Winamp for linux doesnt' run on their shiny new Mac or Alpha?

Maybe I'm just a troll for cross platform support, except I don't believe anything can ever be cross platform without it being open source or being written with an opensource interpreted language using opensource, using only cross-platform libraries :)

  8. Several options on Wanted - 45 Mile Wireless Broadband? · · Score: 1

First, if anyone has considered dry-pairs.. remember that they need to run though the same telco building. This eliminates anything as far as 45 miles.

Wireless with a repeater would work, although it would be some work to find a place to put the repeater. But it could happen. Latency over this distance could be a problem. I found some 802.11b wireless bridges that will fill a 25mile gap, with some effort you may be able to find some that span greater distances.

Running fiber that far would be expensive, but possible. For such a distance, you would probably have to get special permit by your local authorities.

Satallite downlink would definately be possible, although it is unidirectional and you would need to get a line for uplink.. which could be a problem.

Of course there is always the option of hiring an intern, buying a cd burner, and a year worth of train tickets.
