    Because when we shop on the net we're trained to seek out the lowest price, at the expense of quality. And it's not exactly like the places selling dodgy RAM will label it as "Dodgy!".

    You don't see the goatse.cx bit in the status bar, because the spaces push it off the right of your screen. Pretty clever, even if it is stealing an idea from another story!

    The real battle here is going to be for users, and Microsoft really does have all the cards - Hailstorm is going to be installed by default on 90% of the desktops out there. But if the open alternative can get critical mass, then we're in with a chance!

    OSDN must have about half a million users, all the userland sites probably have a few more, so that could be a million users for starters if OSDN links up with userland. Then you just need to add a few corps that have a lot to lose from hailstorm (the AOL userbase would be nice!) and all of a sudden hailstorm is behind the eight ball.

    There really is only room for one player in the distributed membership field, so we should do what we can to make it an open system.

    These ring tones always use the most catchy part of the song, and even if it is a cheesy rendition, it can't help but promote the song - when a phone rings on the train that could mean 50 people are forced to listen to it over and over while the phone's owner looks in their bag for the phone.

    It's just like radio play, except better, because the people within earshot who have to listen can't change to another station.

    Most people don't even bother to make it work on other platforms. e.g. On Macs it's ctrl-click, so the script doesn't pick it up...

    The signal travels at the speed of light, and that 's all there is to it. What counts is how strong the signal is compared to the background noise.
