install gsynaptic...that will let you configure your touchpad in a GUI OMG....
the only thing you may need to do is add an option to xorg.conf so the X server will let gsynaptic configure the touchpad...
Except that, you don't really need to modify files etc...
Linux have flaws etc...but seriously....does he know anything he's talking about...
TouchPad do have something to configure how it work...gsynaptic or ksynaptic for gnome/kde
Actually to make it work...you need to add something to the xorg.conf file so the synaptic app will be able to configure it.
But with the new version of ubuntu, there will be a xorg editor in gui...wow...
As for the rest...saying that "nobody is ultimately responsible for the quality of the product" is a bunch of crap...nothing really go into a release without being revised/tested enough to be enough stable or good.
Saying that Ipods and his Kodak don't work as great as in windows....
Sorry we cannot be good in every ways...Do kodak or Apple provided the stuff to make it work correctly? No so, count you lucky that it works...
As for stability, i rarely have problem of stability except hibernation that do some strange things to my screen...but it's not random...it always do the same thing but the computer still work...
and for the last thing i hate the most of this article....
The last sentence....
"But for now, I still advise mainstream, nontechnical users to avoid Linux."
Seriously, if normal mainstream non technical users avoid using linux how would we know what to change in it...?
If there is nobody except us "techie" users... how would it help non technical user to get a platform that fits their needs more than anything else...
Asking to avoid something because it's harder or different to use is like saying...don't try to find better solution to your problems because it may take time and self work on it. Something really difficult..self work...having to learn a new system etc...
Ah and the funniest thing...
"I was warned that some of these codecs might be "bad" or "ugly.""
What is he talking about...? these codecs are in package named bad/ugly but aren't actually bad or ugly...they are just located in a package called like that...And if these package are called this way...this is probably just in link with FOSS and not quality of these codecs...
As i see...wmv support would be in bad or ugly because its probably a bad idea to use this format...or ugly because it's a proprietary format...something very ugly isn't it?!
All i know is that ooxml contain tags that are proprietary...refering to office95 by exemple...For microsoft it may not be a bad idea but seriously...you're making a standard. thats like saying if HTML contained tag for Internet Explorer and it was w3c valid....!
Something like
But you are asking people to implement things don't have anylink with any other web browser...
wouldn't be restrictive and would not contain any proprietary tags.
By standard, i see a format that will work on whatever software without making fancy hack...
ODF does it... ODF is an ISO...ooxml isn't and contain some proprietary information that may not be handled by any other software except ms office... It contains deprecated things and things that don't have their place there.
Nobody really want to be forced to use something that you thrown away...If i were him, i would just not use a computer... Except if i have to do work on it...
But seriously, it may look bizarre..but it's like forcing someone to have a religion...or to believe in whatever god... Thats like if a freedom fighter was forced to figth against freedom fighter...
can you support what you are saying ? I don't care about photoshop or gimp...But gimp does work very great for many things... Can you tell me wich features professional needs that Gimp don't seriously if you want to put some information here add some meat around the bones because right now...this post is just useless.
Or even...if gimp is so bad why don't we bring them some money so they could put more time on their damn fucking missing features? so then we could have a rock solid image application...
As far as i know, i too eard that many professional are starting to adopt gimp. as image processing application. If you can't provide any link or number to what you say...
I'll just add one more thing...the community of the gimp probably can just grow more everyday as linux does. Slow but steady...
Thats like saying that linux isn't use more and more as a day to day desktop Os...
Just freaking stupid...
yeah i know...but start a project with java then with flex...you could try papervision or away3d...(these are software 3d api)
The problem is that...as far as i know...these libs aren't java native. So someone that have java installed will need to install JOGL or lwgl or any other opengl project
it need additional libraries compared to flex or silverlight that may become just a swf file. and the player would handle everything.
By the way, i never put much time trying to setup a jogl project because for some reasons from time to time...files were moving from packages to packages and having to kick my head on a wall because jdevelopper/eclipse couldn't find the files to compile.
So then when opengl will be included natively inside java. I'll probably think about it because flash doesn't handle really well right click...and Jake2 was looking very cool.
When we'll get 3d acceleration...things will be awesome... i heard Adobe should be working on this so people may develop 3d content within flash/flex etc
So then...the thing that is funny...
If microsoft want to add 3d acceleration to silverlight...they don't have much choice than using opengl because directX isn't cross platform. So then...it's up to them to develop a port of silverlight using directX but for the mac/linux version it will need opengl.
So a microsoft app forced to use opengl is damn funny to me:P
But yeah, it's not about linux but adobe... If the flashplayer could be opensourced i can clearly see improvement with the linux version that is actually definitively not stable.
Having competition between microsoft and adobe can just push better products to come out.
time will tell
What is so bad about GPL3...
If people don't like it...use something else and find work around...Xandros, Novell, Linspire...if they can't use that anymore because it is a gpled 3...Thats their problem.
they could make a fork if they want...But someone would have to tell me how is it better for the rest of the community...?
"try hibernating instead of shutting down."
As for my self, the word try is well chosen.
Hibernate mode may work, if it works. When i try to open the computer, Grub directly boot linux instead of letting me boot windows...(Actually when i had windows on hit)
I had a better idea. Why would i create multiple partition on one hard drive. While when i need to reinstall windows. It just destroy my mbr and Grub. So i need to reinstall grub... And it's a pain in the ass.
Installing drivers for windows etc. Windows + Linux on the same drive = less space for linux or windows or both.
So i bought an other drive for windows. And i only boot when i want to play games that aren't available for linux. But most of the time windows is useless for me.
I'm using a laptop and it's pretty easy to change the harddrive. 2 minutes max. A little bit longer than dual boot. But i don't fear to boot linux and see that windows broke my fs table or something else.
I have all the space for linux + some space to test alternative distro.
And linux + wiimote = fucking damn too funny.
Am i wrong it the first goal of the deal was to make better interoportability between suseLinux and windows.
So if they want to make things better, They have to build code. Thats what the partnership was for. No?
So then if they write code, and this code is released over gpl3. They would become gpl code distributor?
And everybody talk about patent protection. While the main public reason was for interoportability!
Wow, we could start a movie...Shell hell and the editor of the beast....VI VI VI
People would probably go home with a different perspective on how to use their computers.
cmd line are faster to do most of the thing i need.
And to continue, to protect you computer against malware.
you need to watch... The return of the daemon.
then killall
Or even
Cron Jobs log my home
Bill and Ballmer light up their cigar...
Bill: Linux is giving us money if we let him alive...
Ballmer: Take is money then kill him. I don't care about that.
I still don't understand why would microsoft help linux to work better with windows and windows to work better with linux. It's nonsense. Microsoft should just respect some standard and it would greatly help.
And i still don't see why would microsoft help linux to kill it. It's like a self suicide
I remember a story here in Canada.
If i remember right. This was about a contract with the US for Bell Helicopter or something like that.
The us provided a list of who could work on the contract based on their nationalities.
All the people that came from blacklisted nationalities were fired up. It's just a stupid thing. People that leaved their country because the life wasn't great. Come here and work and have a great job until, united state comes and say you cannot work here because your origins are on the black list.
I still believe that if i would like to trade with people in Cuba. It should be my right to decide if i want or not. The government don't have any word on who would work in my company or with who I trade things.
It's just like if your parent choose who you can go out with and who not!
http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;30684 2912;fp;4194304;fpid;1
Does windows vista have the same level of security than that?
I would say that if they don't find that many bugs into the 6 first months,
It doesn't mean it's more secure, it just show you that they aren't able to found vulnerabilities before hackers. So then when we know that redhat is the one who found the most vulnerabilites and they have "that" level of security.
I believe that finding a lot of bugs into the first 6 months is a good thing. Because if they don't find it... your computer have a hole that is just waiting for someone to use it.
Is AIDS not dangerous unless you found you have it?
But if thats the plan, why would microsoft want to make it happen?
I was talking about companies and corporation that own servers and anything. Why would people bother to setup a network of computer with linux and windows. When they can simply put everything in linux freely.
I don't know how do they work in other office, But using ssh / svn / any source manager and a lot of tool is much more harder on windows than it is in linux. people may say that console is difficult?! But seriously, having to write a simple command line to make a task for you is much more productive than using any interface asking you to click there and there.
But Joe Sixpack won't care to buy a pricier computer as he know his game will run on it with windows. Linux need commercial games to become a real alternative for Joe Sixpack.
Thats the same story for mac... Mac without games = professional only or mostly professional.
Mac with games = Mac for everyone
Mac and Linux are really similar in many ways.
Thats a cool thing. I was hoping that it would happen because Ubuntu is so cool and don't actually need anything from microsoft to become better. Interoportability is just a lie in my opinion... Why would microsoft want to make windows more portable for linux while it isn't interoportable on previous version of windows... dx10 and dx9 games.
Why would someone want to make windows work with linux when he can make linux work with linux?
Sorry I'm just French speaker bastard...
And so if they contribute to Wiki... where do they put the rest money, in art and sport may be...But I see a problem with some computers. Like in our CEGEP (something in between University and College...) our computer are using something that make computers unable to boot or it is really harder to boot linux because of a strange scsi or sata bridge that most of linux distro don't have drivers for. So, we have to use VMware to boot linux on these machines. And actually ATI card make things harder if they want to use all the fluffy effect of Beryl/Compiz.
By the way, where i work...www.poly9.com I have the chance to work on my computer using linux while some others are on mac and others on windows. Something that is funny, having to develop on multi platform is pretty cool.
Mac work great but there are some hacks to make it work with the mouse...
Windows works great
Linux...the plugin from adobe for flash9 is hmm funny. It could work great like it could eat up to 1.7 gig of ram. I believe there is a kind of memory leak somewhere but it just affect linux.
It may be macromedia driver/ Firefox/ anything else that i don't know that it could do it. Fullscreen with flash9 in linux isn't supported or i will have to make a hack for it. Anyway, If adobe could leave JNI for flexbuilder it would be awesome...FlexBuilder plugin doesn't run on linux. The funny thing is that it is a eclipse plugin but they use java native interface...
At this point lots of, perhaps even most, universities have a computer lab full of microsoft windows machines with visual studio (express apparently) and NO solaris or linux machines anywhere to be found. Perhaps in the past there were more solaris boxes and whatnot, but that has changed, thanks to microsoft making an effort to supply schools with "educational" software. Actually, in my old school one prof was talking about putting linux into computers so student would work more and play less...
Actually, this could be actually wrong.
ActiveDirectory is harder to play with than novell ConsoleOne to administrate things. Our sysadmin at shcool do use freebsd for our network. Oh and remember that using linux for futur computer should cost less letting more money to the educational system so may be they could buy new books and throw away (most of the books) the books that are older than me.
Oh and by the way, putting linux into school is like forming a big army of linux zealot... Thats not what microsoft want:)
