  1. Great idea... kinda on Making Banner Ads Suck Less · · Score: 1

This may work fine for the /.'rs or K5'rs out there that are willing to wade through a sea of links to get some ads turned off and such. I like the Karma idea though, but how would this be tracked on a per user basis and would people at that point not start screaming bloody murder about your tracking of what banner is shown on which system? Personally, I don't give a rats ass but others will. Or did I simply read this wrong in my effort to get first post? :D

Or he could go to work for one of the many Linux cash-grab companies out there. Orrr, AMD could think; "Hell, we have Linus on the payroll. That can't be a bad thing." I just love how soo many stories get manipulated in such a way that the smallest association with Linux actually turns into the main content. I would be more concerned as to what will happen to those Crusoe (sp?) chips. Will AMD swallow it up into a K6-4? K7-Mobile-2? Or will it continue as a brand with AMD using some of the (very good) tech knowledge in their own products. *sigh* tinfoil.music http://music.tinfoil.net

Would someone drop $15,000-$20,000 on an RS/6000 (which my company is currently looking at) when they find out it comes with a free OS? One customer bought a system (out of town). She had forgotten her speakers and went back to pick them up only to find a closed sign and no contact information for warranties. This sort of Fly-By-Night customer exploitation cuts into the profitability of honest computer shops and takes advantage of customers. Ge their money and get out. Sure, it will likely raise the price of computers, but only so that companies out there have to use quality components.

As far as problems with the software, I don't think that that will be part of it. Only the stuff that the shop can control. I could not control what windows would do if the user did such and such a thing. I could not possibly remember all the BSOD and error codes, it should not be the responibility of the reseller to support software that they themselves did not write. That's MS's job.

And damnit! Windows is a perfectly good OS for many, MANY, people out there. I can not remember the last time windows died on me. Not saying that Linux is not a viable alternative (not saying it is though either, as I sure as hell wouldn;t want my parents, in-laws and grandparents using it (imagine the phone calls? egads)). And AOL coming to Linux can be a good thing if one thinks about it. It isn't just newbies using AOL *GASP* it is also made up of many people who are using it because either work or parents pay for it. Nothing like free internet access. There are also many places where AOL is the only (decent) choice. When AOL first came to town here, it was a better and faster solution than the generic ISP's. Who do you think I went with?

Did I curse and complain that it wasn;t available or *nix? No. At that time it just wasn't possible to do in *nix what I could in windows so I was in windows to do work. Now that Linux has become a viable alternative to Windows people like AOL are taking notice and allowing for those people who are using AOL for one reason or another to use it AND Linux at the same time.

If people want Linux to take over Windows, they are going to have to accept that the companies that will be affected by this will also want to get on the bandwagon. It is simply self-preservation.

And now I am seeing anymosity towards RedHat. Why is this? Could it be that one of the companies who helped bring Linux to the fore-front is now being regarded as monopolistic because they are making money? People do have to do that you know.

The greater the number of mainstream apps that come to Linux means a greater number of users and less reason to have to keep that Windows partition on the system.
