  1. Re:Intel Macs not affected? on Flaws In Intel Processors Quietly Patched · · Score: 1

When Apple switched on Intel it did its own research in new CPU's and did find more than hundred of instruction flaws / issues. Just search slashdot :)

Unlike M$, Apple is paranoid and does care about its reputation.

Intel had bad flaw in FPU unit on Pentium series. Intel never recalled flawed CPU's, in fact Intel did try to hide the issue, and coders were forced to use (slow) FPU emulation. The FPU flaw propagated on celeron and Pentium III processors.

I had to switch to AMD.

Well .. maybe the mac OS is harder to bot up.

  2. Re:What's the point? on First Peek at Netscape Navigator 9 · · Score: 1

    Here are the points:

Netscape has the site controls and use the Trust Settings that can be customised. The trust settings are used to keep the users away from malicious code on the web.
Netscape has the nasty habit to crashes itself while loading malicious code that is on the page. This prevents spreading the viruses on to windows or warns of ongoing infection.
Netscape had the best POP3/SMTP mailer ever. The most of the modern POP3/SMTP mailers are crap compared to Netscape 7.2 mailer.
Old Netscape versions did not bind to the windows, so no need to reinstall .. You just make the shortcut and everything is set up and ready to go. Backup was easy. Just install Netscape on the partition that has no Windows on it !
Buggy part of Netscape 6.x and 7.x was the bug reporting tool. Installing the Netscape without that tool fixed most of the issues.
People complaining about Netscape being slow and buggy used crappy computers with 32 or less megs of RAM or had Intel CPU-s :P The most of that RAM was used by embedded IExplore.exe code. That is why IE4 and IE5 was loading lightning fast compared to the Netscape 4.x or 6.x.

I'll never say that any version of Netscape was flawless. Because of the Netscape I do not need to pay protection racket to the AV companies to keep my Windows virus free. Yes I DO NOT need the antiviral software to scan my internet traffic and I DO NOT need the AV software to plow my hard drives all the time to search for the infected files. That IS the point of using the Netscape.

BTW I feel sorry for the IE users. I really do.

  3. Re:Clear and Present Danger on US Opposes G8 Climate Proposals · · Score: 1

That's not true. The USA is very high in total, but there are several small countries that are higher per capita, and some large countries that are close. Your comment is not true, read the text that You have quoted, and then follow the links You have provided.

The USA is the world leader in CO2 production per head, and the leader in total CO2 production. Other countries are eider low in total or low in per capita CO2 production. That makes them low in CO2 production, and therefore no reduction in CO2 emission level can be done or give the useful results.

Nuclear power is our friend. In 40 years when that uranium from the nuclear power plant gets all used up and becomes the deadly nuclear waste I guess You would not consider it so friendly. The best solution is to dispose it overseas to the "third world countries".
That is so "green" and "friendly"

Hey, remember. Emissions!=energy production. Right. No emission for 40 years and after that you need an army of sentinells to safeguard the nuclear waste ( the emission ) fot the next billion years.

    short: Yes.
long: Yes, but moving heavily loaded excavator might be difficult on the moon surface since the "soil" might be loose and soft.

There is no atmosphere on the moon so it is possible to throw the regolith in to the container without any need to use the conveyor belt or to move the excavator to the destination box. I am surprised that no one used any similar design ( no details on excavators ) as it eliminates the need for moving the excavator to and from the collector and such design might be more useful on the moon.

150 kgs on 30 Watts ... on Earth. On the Moon should be more than enough. However low gravity on the Moon might make the scooping inefective if not dificult at least. ... why this competition anyway? Surface of the Earth is diferent than that of the Moon. On the Moon it might be more eficient to throw packed regolith in to the container, and use recoil momentum to power the scoop. Regolith is not the sand and dust only, it contains irregular shaped grains that may vary in size. If the competition is to make the useable prototype digger than NASA might use more coarse simulant.
