Also, gotta wonder how/if it effects a properly patched windows xp machine and/or vista. I do not update or patch WindowsXP SP2. I do shut down unneeded services, I use SpybotSD to immunize Internet Explorer and I do tweak windows not to do this or that. I use the firewall to control programs, and have no resident virus scanning programs. I never use the Internet Explorer or Outlook.

I use skype every day. Yesterday I have been spammed on pure geek English from my non English speaking friend to open some links like www.fakeit.org/somethig/~blahblah/funny.jpg while he was DND. I know that he would never speak / type to me in English, so it was clearly a virus.
I have fair collection of so called "viruses". I wanted damn copy of it without getting infected. I did try following:
    1. download it with flashget. Failed. FlashGet reported that connection has been refused or terminated at the other side or something like that.
    2. download the link using the Netscape 8.1.3 ( the last Netscape ). Failed again. Netscape reported that link/site is known malware.
I did not try to shutdown the firewall, or to disable the proxy, but something prevented the safe download of the file.

A lame and quick fix would be to update the Skype not to show any links containing the .exe at the end. I guess that M$ could do something about activating the .exe links, but it might not be their top priority ATM and it obviously was not for the last 12+ years.

Sure there is a way to setup WiFi network with routers spread more than 500 meters away. Just use high output WiFi PCI cards ( or access point devices with high power output chips ) and high gain directional antennas ( 15+ dB ) and you are on track to success. There are a lot of commercially available high gain antennas, however most of them working little bit lower than the specified ( usually bad SWR at the band ends ). Hint: chose antenna by radiation angle both horizontal and vertical, not only by gain. Care for polarisation.
You can google for DIY antenna projects, however, 95% of them are crap or working far worse than specified. ( paperclip antenna anyone ? )
If You like the DIY stuff visit

http://www.yu1aw.ba-karlsruhe.de/vhf_ant.htm ( sorry no English files, but diagrams are readable ). I have made several antennas described on this site for the local wireless community

http://www.kvwireless.org/gallery/main.php?g2_item Id=168&g2_enterAlbum=1 and they performed very well.
We are switching links for hotspots to 5.6 GHz band for the following benefits: better throughput, more free channels, less noise.

Our routers are salvaged PC-s usually more than 7 years old. Most of them are standard PC-s at 200-533 MHz stripped out of unnecessary hardware. They use roughly 25 to 100 watt depending on CPU frequency, number of wireless PCI cards onboard and workload. At that power rate relaying only on solar power can be quite expensive and bulky. For the outdoor routers, far away from the wall outlet, PV solar + wind power + back-up battery might be more suitable and cheaper.

I eventually get the networking going good (though Vista still refuses to see the SMB shares on my Powerbook G4, even though it sees my PC's shares just fine, and my PC [running XP] sees my Powerbook's shares just fine). ... just like mixed Windows 98SE / Windows XP network I had years ago.

So, I go on the Internet and obtain Firefox (what, you think I was going to use IE7? You must be joking.), which installs smoothly and works flawlessly on Vista. I'm quite happy about this. Watch out for SP1. ( netscape is dead, so firefox is next one to get molested by M$ )

Later, I'm playing Warcraft over LAN with some friends over, and, in the middle of a game, Vista's firewall decides that it should start blocking Warcraft's communication. Warcraft is the Blizzard's game. It is an rival company that sells software. Some measures must be taken.

Keep in mind that I've been playing for, oh, 4 hours at this point, and Vista has given me no trouble. Suddenly, the firewall dialog appears in the middle of my screen, and requests that I block/unblock the program. Well, Vista is hog, and it needed 4 hours to hook up with M$ software monopoly central to get the command to pop up the requester.

There are other problems: Vista will not go to sleep when I close the lid (probably Toshiba's fault, but XP, which I recently installed, seems to handle that just fine); Vista randomly loses an Internet connection sometimes on a wired Ethernet link; Microsoft has nasty habit to change programing policies, giving software / hardware driver developers hard time.

Vista's window manager takes up a lot of RAM (300+MB private bytes) and a constant 3% CPU usage on both cores (on a 2.0GHz Core Duo processor); etc. etc. Vista is hog. Even if You try to switch off the window manager, it will probably just suspend part of it to swap file.

MMOG developers don't hate on thieves, they just need a way to keep players playing the content, and the best way is to grind for the resources, reputation, honor, like everyone else does. Thieves don't need to grind as much as others since they can pickpocket the enemy, lock pick the resources, and they can hide, back stab and garrote, no one needs honor for that. Grinding MMOGs are preventing players from trying to play any other game as they will fall behind their guild mates. Grinding concept is the most effective way of preventing the competition between the MMOG developers in fact it is killing the competition.

Compare this to 99% of online games where thieves are universally hated on. .. by the enemy players for their sinister playing style.
.. by the friendly players for ninjaing / deserting the party in the middle of the instance ( my experience )
.. by the game developers for shortcutting the game content, avoiding the grinding concept, and various mischief related to NCP AI.

The sneak skills don't work. Many MMOGs are level based. High level NCPs / bosses just can "see" the stealthy players. It is an easy, dirty and quick fix for the poor AI that fails to perform adequately.

Lock picking is virtually non-existent. Yet it can make an thief / rogue important party member. A thief could sneak into the dungeon, explore it, open the treasure chests to see the content and organize the party for the looting.
Can a thief sneak around with the heavy backpack full of rattling loot without being detected? I guess he can in 99% of the games - poor AI and bad game engines is killing the team play, and draws anger and jealousy on the thieves. I say games need better engines.

Using the thief skills you can finish every mission in Oblivion almost without killing a single monster. Fine for a single player game, but how do you balance such awesome skills in a competitive online world? By making the equipment attributes more than AC/DR/level/class/weight. Many games do not restrict equipment on class base, yet use arcane failure attribute to prevent arcane spell casters to wear anything better than cloth or leather armor. And You are talking about hatred towards thieves ...
If the equipment had an "rattle & noise" attribute, choosing the equipment would be an essential for the thief, and a great concern for the tactics and team play. That is IF the developers make the NCPs aware of the noise.
ZeniMax Online Studios have to enhance their game engine to make game more playable for the spell casters, and enhance NCPs AI to avoid WoW type instance looting. If their game becomes another grinding MMOG then it will not be worth much more than the graphics.

There is no hope that manufacturers will ditch using aluminium electrolytic capacitors any time soon. The reason is that modern high performance / low performance per watt CPU like AMD or Intel uses 100 Amps at 1.5 Volts, so high capacitors are needed in motherboard power supply just to keep ripple voltage low enough. Aluminium electrolytic capacitors have life time 1000 to 5000 hours depending on load, (high load gives short life time).
Solid-core tantalum and vanadium capacitors are too expensive and bulky for motherboards and they are not available in large capacitance's / voltages.
